2016 Blue Mountain Pinot Noir ReserveOkanagan Valley more |
5/15/2024 - hkbob Likes this wine: 91 pointsFrom magnum. Much better than a magnum drunk several months ago which was completely flat. Cola, sweet wild strawberry, pomegranate, baking spice notes on the nose. Medium red-fruited palate with some textural creaminess. Medium length. Best consumed over the next year or two. |

5/12/2024 - hkbob Likes this wine: 94 pointsDeep purple. Very Napa. Blackberry, Mesquite, graphite, earth and hints of vanilla and coffee beans. Rich, full-bodied dark-fruited palate with mouthwatering acidity providing lift and pulling you back for more. This is still very young and primary although provides considerable pleasure with an hour or so of air. Lots of upside potential with further cellaring. |

5/9/2024 - hkbob Likes this wine: 97 pointsWow, this was the ticket! Classic Graves nose with a panoply of pencil lead, sous-bois, smokiness, Grandfather's basement and traces of leather and tobacco. Hard pressed to find the merlot despite the atypically high content in this rendition. Still remarkably youthful on the palate with secondary flavours and complexity starting to emerge with aeration. Full-bodied but so light on its feet. Long, lovely cedar and tobacco infused finish. Years to run still but several hours in a decanter are suggested if drinking now. Loved it. |

2000 La MondotteSt. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more |
5/9/2024 - hkbob Likes this wine: 95 pointsYouthful dark purple/black. The nose continued to unfurl over several hours giving up more primary aromas of black raspberry, plum, dark cherry, anise and some earthy notes in the background. Youthful dark-fruited palate. Full-bodied and lush but not overdone. This was really only starting to come around after about 3 hours with good energy, lift and complexity. Ideally this should have received at least several hours in the decanter before consuming to show at its best. Probably a decade of good drinking ahead based on this showing. |

2001 d'Arenberg Shiraz The Dead ArmMcLaren Vale more |
5/4/2024 - hkbob Likes this wine: 95 pointsA 30 minute decant and this was good to go. Burnished garnet. All secondary aromatics of blackberry fruit with some leather, tobacco and spice notes. On the palate, secondary flavours of very dark fruit, with cherry, umami, iodine and a touch of anise. Mouthwatering acidity with some grippy tannins outlasting the fruit on the longish finish so best consumed with some aged cheeses or heartier dishes. The old vines bearing the fruit for this wine have produced something with tremendous longevity and durability. I have been quite impressed with every bottle enjoyed of this over the past 15 years or so. A poor man's Grange perhaps but so delicious in its own right. Bravo. |

4/20/2024 - hkbob Likes this wine: 95 pointsThis drank so much better than a much more evolved bottle consumed a couple of months ago. Deep purple in appearance. Ripe, sweet blackberry fruit with mocha and some iodine notes. Full-bodied mouthful of velvety rich dark fruit flows seamlessly across the palate with some spice and a pronounced dark cherry note. Well-balanced for such a big wine. A superb bottle and very enjoyable. |

2010 Argiano Brunello di MontalcinoSangiovese more |
4/20/2024 - hkbob Likes this wine: 94 pointsFrom magnum. Holding on to a youthful deep garnet colour. Pronounced aromatics of sous-bois, Ceylon tea, leather, olive and some savoury 5-spice notes in the background. This showed none of the pruney notes of previous bottles consumed over the past few years which came across as much more evolved. Full to medium-bodied with flavours of dried dark fruit and some cherry notes. Most of the action was on the front to mid palate. Decent length with a bit of grip persisting on the finish. Delicious now but I can't see further upside. |

2005 Château La ClotteSt. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more |
4/14/2024 - hkbob Likes this wine: 92 pointsMedium garnet. Giving up secondary and tertiary notes of red and blue fruit, tobacco and earth. Medium-bodied palate with a modest slightly drying finish. Better on the nose than the palate and enjoyment was elevated when paired with food. Bottles should be consumed soon. |

2009 Château Le CarréSt. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more |
4/13/2024 - hkbob Likes this wine: 96 pointsAn utterly sublime bottle and very atypical St Emilion. More of a mid-weight wine with everything in perfect proportion. Pure silk on the palate, with fragrant dark and blue fruits, minerals, toasty oak notes and wonderful inner mouth perfume. Long mouthwatering finish that pulls you in for more. Absolute class. This wine is not easy to find as only a few hundred cases were produced. I will not hesitate to grab any bottles I may come across in future as it is that good. |

2018 Envinate Palo BlancoValle de la Orotava Listan Blanco, Palomino Fino more |
4/13/2024 - hkbob Likes this wine: 93 pointsMedium gold with an orange sheen. Fresh citrus, floral and tropical aromas with a pronounced marine note overlaying it all. Medium-bodied, almost viscous through the mid-palate with a saline, oyster shell, and mineral finish. Well-judged acidity. This was a match made in heaven with raw oysters on the half-shell, seared scallops and prawns. I really enjoyed this bottle and will not hesitate to buy again. |

2006 Il Poggione (Proprietá Franceschi) Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna PaganelliSangiovese more |
4/7/2024 - hkbob Likes this wine: 94 pointsThis wine has really started to come together since the last one I consumed a few years ago. It now shows a more pronounced nose of dark fruit, licorice, garrigue, and minerals leading to a full-bodied dark-fruited palate with an intense balsamic note through the mid-palate and a long finish. Still some tannins on the back-end but the fruit is there to outlast them. This should score better in a few years when all the pieces fully come together. Next bottle in 2 years. Great wine and even better with food. |

3/28/2024 - hkbob Likes this wine: 93 pointsFully mature with some vestiges of fruit. I got my Bdx fix from the aromatics with lots of cedar, earth and tobacco notes. Nicely balanced with most of the action on initial entry through the mid-palate leading to a modest cedar-infused finish showing a bit of dryness on the tail-end. This medium-bodied wine is unlikely to improve further but will probably hold where it is for a few years still. An hour of air brought the wine to its best. Enjoyed with some aged cheese. |

2006 Château Lynch-BagesPauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more |
3/23/2024 - hkbob Likes this wine: 93 pointsThis was a very good if not profound Lynch Bages. Showing Pauillac typicity with cassis, pencil lead and earthy notes on the nose with a trace of BBQ smoke. Medium to full-bodied with some tannins still to be resolved. Good length and enough mouth-watering acidity to keep me coming back for more. This should see some upside with another 5 years or so in the cellar. |

2012 Château Larcis DucasseSt. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more |
3/23/2024 - hkbob Likes this wine: 94 pointsTerrific bottle from an unheralded vintage. Aromatics of dark cherry, raspberry and red plum notes with a floral overlay. Voluptuous blue and red-fruited palate with great freshness and good length. Just lovely and the best part is this sells for a song. |

3/21/2024 - hkbob Likes this wine: 95 pointsAnother superb bottle of this wine. Absolutely singing, especially when paired with Greek lamb shank. Wow. Fragrant dark cherry nose with earth, tobacco, mesquite and iodine notes. Full-bodied with silky tannins and a long finish. A 30 minute decant was all it needed to be at its best. Excellent. 4 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (3) |

3/19/2024 - hkbob Likes this wine: 94 pointsPoured an opaque purple with a rusty sheen. Blackberry, iodine and some pruny background notes. Full-bodied mouthful of lush dark fruit and good length. Just starting to tip off the far end of its prime drinking window so consuming sooner than later is suggested. I enjoyed but couldn't manage more than a couple of glasses given its richness. |

3/15/2024 - hkbob Likes this wine: 97 pointsThis was a gorgeous wine from its bright copper-gold colour, through its citrus marmalade, tropical fruit and Manuka-honeyed nose to its creamy botrytis-infused palate with just enough racy acidity to keep it light on its feet. Perfectly judged sweetness. And no rush to drink yet either. Yum. |

2007 Quilceda Creek Cabernet SauvignonColumbia Valley more |
3/15/2024 - hkbob Likes this wine: 95 pointsDark fruit profile with telltale Cab Sav notes asserting themselves on the nose. Full-bodied palate showing good freshness and a long dark cherry-infused finish. This was an excellent bottle which would have merited another point or two had it shown a bit more complexity. In the zone now. |

3/15/2024 - hkbob Likes this wine: 94 pointsFragrant floral and red-fruit notes with Mediterranean herbs and a hint of iodine making an appearance. Showing quite young still with some mouth-watering acidity and good length. The palate came around with a couple of hours of air although it lost a bit on the nose. I believe bottles will benefit from a few more years in the cellar. |

3/9/2024 - hkbob Likes this wine: 91 pointsMedium garnet with no obvious signs of aging. Brilliant aromatics of dark cherry, graphite, iodine and Ceylon tea with some sweetness in the mix. A creamy entry, good intensity and quite full through the mid-palate with oodles of dark fruit. But the tannins from the new oak quickly overtake the fruit on the modest, drying finish. Well-made for sure but I suspect its best days may have sailed. I would suggest drinking this wine now alongside some aged cheese or other food that can hold up to those fierce tannins. |

2019 Domaine Drouhin Oregon Pinot NoirDundee Hills more |
3/3/2024 - hkbob Likes this wine: 90 pointsSubdued nose of strawberry, pomegranate, red cherry and sous-bois notes with some background sweetness. A lighter-bodied frame with pronounced acidity, gradually opening up over a couple of hours to develop a creamier palate profile. Medium finish. I was left wanting - for me, this wine was like a plane taxiing down the runway but never quite achieving lift-off. A glass poured on day 2 had taken a step backward. My score reflects the best part of its drinking window. |

2/24/2024 - hkbob wrote: 91 pointsIt's been a few years since I've had a bottle of this. This has now tipped over the edge from the exuberance it had in its youth to a slightly past its best mature fruit bomb. Still an impenetrable dark colour but with a slight rusty sheen, a mix of sweet blackberry with some prominent pruney notes and its 15.5% abv very much in evidence. Almost too rich. Lots of mature fruit on the palate and with considerable length, but just lacking freshness. An hour decant improved the experience. |

2/19/2024 - hkbob Likes this wine: 95 pointsFully mature with aromas of autumn leaves, tobacco, dark cherry and plummy fruit. Medium to full-bodied with enough acidity to provide lift and decent length to the secondary notes of its dark fruit profile. About an hour of air seemed to be all that was needed for the wine to hit its full stride. Worked well with some aged cheese. This well-stored bottle seemed to be nearing the far end of its prime drinking window. Delicious. |
