2013 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Echezeaux Vieille VignePinot Noir more |
3/24/2024 - Charlie Carnes Likes this wine: 96 pointsWow, I loved this. It’s easily the best Burgundy of this year. One of only two bottles… this was beautifully dark red fruited, mostly dark red cherry, with iron traits and bauxite thoughts. I loved it for its richness and weightlessness. It had a lovely spice component, Vosne-like almost, Christmas spice and clay road petrichor. This had a great mouthfeel, poise and balance. I would love to find a few more of these! |

2008 Dom Pérignon Champagne RoséChampagne Blend more |
4/24/2024 - Charlie Carnes wrote: 97 pointsThis was a really exceptional. Every now and then Dom rosé can be a little bit of a head scratcher. I have loved many bottles though. I believe this is the first 2008 I’ve drunk. It was bristling with freshness, and energy and tons of deep, dark, red strawberries, and a little rhubarb. It was braced with beautiful minerals, rock dust maybe some deep dark purple/red clay. It frank terrifically as it was bright and ebullient. I really liked it. |

2017 Roses de Jeanne / Cédric Bouchard Champagne Millésimé Blanc de Noirs Les UrsulesPinot Noir more |
4/14/2024 - Charlie Carnes Does not like this wine: 82 pointsThis, a tale of two Ursules, is barely drinkable. It’s sour-ish, really hard to swallow! Bottle was not finished. I’ve gotten to where I’m hesitant to purchase or open Bouchard. Like Selosse and Marguet, there is no telling what is going to be in the bottle! |

1989 Château Brane-CantenacMargaux Red Bordeaux Blend more |
2/24/2024 - Charlie Carnes Likes this wine: 94 pointsThis is always great. It’s a great example of a ready to drink, not over the top, Bordeaux, from a fairly ripe vintage, I might add. This has classic red and black cherries, and plenty of soil and mineral traits. It’s picking up secondary traits as well; aged tobacco, forest floor, air dried mahogany, furniture shop, etc. I love it as a classic Bordalais exemplar, it’s balanced, with pure fruit, and so many big pieces, that add no weight at all! Really terrific. |

2007 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Vieille VignePinot Noir more |
3/30/2024 - Charlie Carnes Likes this wine: 96 pointsThis is such a great bottle of wine. Fourrier really nailed the 2007 vintage. This is as red fruited as you will see CSJ. Glorious really with red, dark red, cherry ore mineral, spices, balanced and pure as all get out! This is a great bottle to have guarding your cellar! Do you find this review helpful? 2017 Roses de Jeanne / Cédric Bouchard Champagne Millésimé Blanc de Noirs Les UrsulesPinot Noir more |
3/24/2024 - Charlie Carnes Likes this wine: 94 pointsThis was an Ursules in a great spot! It’s about mineral and fruit, lots of not too sweet citrus, in a bristling, shining kind of way! Lively and powerful, but not weighty at all, a perfect supper on a cool afternoon. |

2014 Edmond Vatan Sancerre Clos la NéoreSauvignon Blanc more |
3/24/2024 - Charlie Carnes Likes this wine: 97 pointsSo Avery walks in with a mag of the 2018, which was fantabulous!!! It goes down pretty quick, so I pull this one out. I thought it was spectacular as well. (Yes, we are Vatan hos) This bottle is about minerals and rocks! So many rocks, and flint, and gneiss, then florals, then astounding fruit. I love the-quite hard to put into words- dull, citrusy, white/yellow/green fruit assault, especially as it combines with the rock/floral/fruit components. Balance, purity, power without weight etc., etc., etc! |

2020 Alvina Pernot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les PucellesChardonnay more |
3/23/2024 - Charlie Carnes Likes this wine: 95 pointsTruthfully Chardonnay and white Burgundy don’t excite me that much. But, when it is on, it has got to be one of my favorites. This beauty from Alvina Pernot is a show stopper. This has such a wonderful, flint mineral to fruit ratio. It has pungent yellow grapefruit, yellow stone fruit, laced with minerals, and green flint, think chipped flint and fresh green herbs/plants. It has amazing mouthfeel and superb balance, and a terrific mouthfeel. |

1987 Groth Cabernet SauvignonOakville more |
3/10/2024 - Charlie Carnes Likes this wine: 93 pointsBoy, I miss the old days! 12.5%, this is dark fruited, lively, delicious. Drunk alongside a 1996 Ravenswood Old Hill. This had dark, cool toned Cabernet fruiti, between red cherry and black cherry, there was plenty of ripe and aged tobacco traits and some secondary forest floor things going on as well. This had some dark loam/earthy soil complexities. It drank so well… I miss the days when California top dogs were not over made! Love it. |

1996 Ravenswood Zinfandel Old HillSonoma Valley more |
3/10/2024 - Charlie Carnes Likes this wine: 92 pointsThis was really nice. We drank this with a 1987 Groth, showing the boys so older California wines. This was dark red to black fruited. With the darkest cherry and cherry skin, and blackberry. It tame and wild at the same time, like a cultivated blackberry patch. (I like Beuker’s use of Brambly). There was earth, and some spice hints. Enjoyed with Flannery Jorges! I wish I would have bought more of these when I had the chance. |

4/14/2024 - Charlie Carnes Likes this wine: 96 pointsThis was terrific! I enjoyed it with various friends and family for about three weeks. This was deep, and spicy, with a memories tickled of so many ancient things, living and dead. I love how fluid this wine was. There were thoughts of mulled spice cake, fruit cake, desserts cooked in various alcohols, cherries jubilee, bananas Foster, bourbon bread pudding, etc., etc. I had thoughts of an active antique store, sweet ripe tobacco, freshly ground coffee. I got a hint of sweet orange, too, which was cool. |

NV Paul Bara Champagne Grand Cru Grand RoséChampagne Blend more |
3/23/2024 - Charlie Carnes Likes this wine: 92 pointsNext to Krug rose. I like the Bara so much, and I am reminded of how much I like Rosé from Bouzy! Lightly of strawberry and and other red berry fruits. It’s light and airy, with dusty trail traits, and small bristling bubbles. |

3/23/2024 - Charlie Carnes Likes this wine: 91 pointsReally tasty, I drank this next to a Paul Bara Grand Cru Rose. The Krug has a subtle oxidative feel, very much in check though. It’s rich and firm with dark red strawberries, and cherry skin. It has loads of mineral traits, and some pretty, active, popping bubbles! Very nice. I give the nod to the Bara, though, as a comparison. |

3/24/2024 - Charlie Carnes Likes this wine: 98 pointsThis was a most generous gift from Alfert, we shared! The 2018 was fantastic. Wide open, crisp, channeling colors in a miraculous way, with powdered lemon peel, stony mineral, limestone, more citrus. This was a crisp, I mean snapping crisp, but it had fleshy traits as well. So complicated, yet so easy going. This is terrific! |
