2000 Château Calon-SégurSt. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend more |
2/15/2024 - dpolzien Likes this wine: 89 pointsProbably just past peak. Came off as 'thinner' than other recent older Calons ('95 and '96). Decanted for 2 hours on day 1, definitely picked up a bit of weight, and was probably just a tad better on Day 2. Based on this experience/bottle, my recommendation would be to drink in the near term. |

1/1/2024 - dpolzien Likes this wine: 92 pointsWent with Roy's updated decanting instructions (3 hours) and was very pleased with the results ... lost a bit of it's initial character (which I favored) on day 2, so would recommend fully enjoying on day 1. 1 person found this helpful, do you? 10/1/2023 - dpolzien Likes this wine: 92 pointsWas a bit worried right off the bat as it was mostly acid and very little nose or fruit on the palate. Definitely blossomed into what I'd expect out of a mature Napa cab over about 3 hours, Day 2 was even better from a fruit perspective. Give this one plenty of air and you'll be rewarded! |

9/22/2023 - dpolzien Likes this wine: 93 pointsThis should satisfy fans of aged Napa and BDX alike. Gave it a few hours in the decanter to start, and was initially showing mostly cigar box and iron notes with plenty of soft tannins. Subtle dark fruit started showing up after another hour or so, at which pairing with an SRF wagyu NY Strip was simply sublime. Fruit faded a bit on day 2, so would recommend finishing on day 1. Probably no rush to finish, as this has the structure to keep going for some time. |

6/28/2023 - dpolzien Likes this wine: 94 pointsA revenge selection to make up for a cancelled flight, this was quite fun to drink. Held up great over 2 days. A bit of a musty nose at first, but opened up to show some dried floral notes. Still a bit of dark fruit on the palate with a hint of iodine. While this still has plenty of tannins and structure for longer aging, can't see this getting much better from here. Drink now with a couple hour decant. |

6/4/2023 - dpolzien Likes this wine: 95 pointsWell I missed the 10 year mark so now checking back after 3 years. Still just as enjoyable, not hot at all on day 2. See no need to hold any longer. |

5/14/2023 - dpolzien Likes this wine: 93 pointsBeen tempted to try these since they first hit my celllar 4+ years ago, and glad I did. Decanted for 2 hours on day 1 and was treated to a classic cab nose and deep, dark fruits on the palate. Tannins definitely get your attention, however they smooth out into day 2, which was a much more balanced experience. I fully expect this will have a long life ahead and glad I have a few more to take part in the journey. Enjoy now with a 2+ hour decant or hold for at least another couple years. 10/9/2022 - dpolzien Likes this wine: 93 pointsPSA - this seemed like it could be flawed right out of the gate, but definitely came around after about 3 hours in the decanter and even better during day 2. Feels like it might be at peak, so recommend drinking up with plenty of air. |

9/18/2022 - dpolzien Likes this wine: 93 pointsDay 1 felt very young with tons of structure ... came across as less than half of it's 8 years. Day 2 shows the rewards for patience, with softer tannins, cocoa and some salinity/savoriness coming out, so if you're like me, enjoy with a long decant. Plenty of life ahead |

8/27/2022 - dpolzien Likes this wine: 94 pointsDrinking so well right now, not much more I can say that hasn't already been said. Took on a bit of a smoky note after pairing with a hunk of Parmigiano Reggiano, which made for a fun experience. |

8/27/2022 - dpolzien wrote: flawedThis was interesting - Sourced from Spectrum Wine Auctions, whom I've had almost no problems with over hundreds of bottles. Bottle and cork looked pristine ... almost too much so (our consensus was that it must have been re-bottled and re-corked at some point), but the wine was fully maderized ... down the drain it went after checking on it a few more times throughout the evening. 8/1/2022 - dpolzien Likes this wine: 94 pointsThis is absolutely ready to go and not sure it's going to get much better. For those that prefer fruit forward, drink with an extended decant on Day 1, for those looking for something that starts heading towards older Napa, save some for Day 2 as the fruit fades a bit with more air ... either way you can't go wrong! |

4/10/2022 - dpolzien Likes this wine: 90 pointsEnjoyed this blend of Zin, Petit Syrah, Grenache, Syrah and Merlot - a fun bottle and a great pairing with a big porterhouse and Chimichurri sauce. Notes of plums and spice predominated and held up well over 2 days. Ready now with a couple hour decant. |

2014 Roy Piper Cabernet SauvignonNapa Valley more |
3/13/2022 - dpolzien Likes this wine: 94 pointsShowing very well after an 8-hour decant, and even better as it evolved throughout the evening. Pours a dark, deep ruby, with initially strong tannins that mellow quickly. Lots of dark fruits and the savory notes/long finish I always enjoy in Roy's wines. Paired great with a thick cowboy ribeye. Drink now with a long decant, but don't hesitate to hold for several more years to see where this goes. |

3/6/2022 - dpolzien wrote: 90 pointsPaired with Crispy Skin Duck Breasts. Needed a long decant, but was fun to observe the evolution over 2 days, with Day 1 having some funky/smoky, toasted notes on the nose with jammy plums and a bit of a whiskey bite on the palate. Most of the earthier notes subsided by day 2 with plum and dark cherry predominating. Enjoy now with a long decant. |

2/11/2022 - dpolzien Likes this wine: 95 pointsThis is drinking so well right now, just loads of dark berries and a layered finish that just wouldn't quit. Ready to go with a 3 hour decant on Day 1. Intensity faded a bit by Day 2 but still a stunning wine just entering into what is likely a long drinking window. Fortunately have 1 more in the cellar and will hold to check in on it when it hits the decade mark. |

2016 Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto Toscana IGTRed Bordeaux Blend more |
2/6/2022 - dpolzien Likes this wine: 91 pointsGuidalberto is quickly becoming our go-to house Tuscan red, and this one was no different. It's versatility was on display when pairing with homemade lasagna on Day 1 and Hanger Steaks paired with Chimichurri sauce on Day 2. Still quite young, the tannins settled after a 3 hour decant, with sour cherry and spices leading the way on the palate. A bit less fruit on day 2 with the tannins even more resolved. Has another 5 years easy. Drink now with a long decant or hold. |
