Angelic, but also round and full. Slightly off dry but pure to the pink musk, white flowers and creamy peaches we expect from great Mosel Riesling. Length was on point and the alcohol and acid was super balanced. Nice!

This was incredibly disappointing. I was overwhelmed by a wood imbued, vanilla oak component. I had to do a double take on the bottle to make sure somebody didn’t slip a modern Bordeaux, or Laurent styled Burgundy in on me. There was pretty, red, fruit down there, somewhere, but I couldn’t get around the sweet, vanilla, creamy, oak, thing going on. This was unlike any Rhys wine I’ve had before.

  • Comment posted by Charlie Carnes:

12/26/2023 1:16:00 PM - Like I said in my note, it was unlike any Rhys I’ve ever had. It’s certainly wasn’t flawed in a poor handling, poor storage, bacteria, chemical, kind of way. Just, perceptually, in a new toasty barrel, kind of way.

Holy cow what a hot mess. This has palate staining, astringent, nearly stewed fruit. I could not get the eucalyptus oil astringency out of my palate for quite a while. Would be surprised it this ever could turn the corner. No sweetness, no earth, no tar, this just seems like a modern hot ass mess!!

Are these wines perfect? I’m beginning to think so… This is my second bottle of Ursules, the first one of the 2017 that was disgorged in 2021. In much the same way the 2014 affected me this one is just vinous perfection. Oh it is kaleidoscopic in fruit colors and fruit perceptions, myriad facets are hard to describe, everything just meshes together into a lively, weightless, beautiful wine. I mean it’s like the essence of 100 different pieces of dried sweet fruits, and 100 different mineral perceptions, all layered gently into the bottle, and comes out in a weightless, effortless, elixir, which has forever lingering flavors, that just do not go away!

  • Comment posted by Charlie Carnes:

2/20/2023 8:46:00 AM - It is a big score. Having had it in two base years/vintages, it’s so consistent, and it somehow meshes perfect with my taste profiles. I think I bought a full case of these.

Wow! This 2005 was absolutely stunning from the get-go. First of all I love Cailles from Chevillon! My first thoughts… Are 2005s coming around? I do not know but this NSG is bad ass. This Is crunchy with gorgeous red fruit and mineral, with a whole cluster feel (I do not know the regimen at all). It is 17 years young and not saying “oak” at all. I cannot get over the pure red berry fruit and myriad spices from a bakers cupboard, and thoughts of dusty clay and granite mineral.

  • Comment posted by Charlie Carnes:

12/5/2022 8:16:00 AM - Tannins we’re not really a thought, unlike the 2005 Perot-Minnot GC I had last week…. Took hours to go away, and we’re always on my mind. The Cailles made me think of all the great things and not harsh 2005ish tannins. One thing I love about Chevillon and His Cailles, they always show well in ripe, big vintages!

Deep red, little colour fade. Absolutely glorious nose of primary red fruits, notably strawberry and bitter cherry. Little in the way of secondary or tertiary development. High acidity and tannin but the fruit powers through. I can easily see this lasting another 25+ years. Probably the highest level of acidity in a 2009 red burgundy I can remember. Magical. Drunk at cellar temperature on a hot-ish day (for the UK, at least!) and it's just perfect.

A clean bottle! The issue with this wine is, will you open Jeckyl or Hyde? The worst bottles are filled with TCA. However, the best bottles and this was one of the best bottles are a thrill-a-sip experience. There is an incredible level of intensity that is packed with Asian spice, Cuban cigars, cedar chest, forest floor, currants, smoke, tobacco, and oceanic influences. Full-bodied, long, structured, and displaying the patina of age that has softened its once fierce tannins, replacing them with a regal textured, fruit and earth packed wine, the finish builds and expands for at least 60 seconds.

On he other hand... My son is leaving to go back to college so we always do a big dinner, with big wines. Last night we had three champagnes. The Ruinart Rosé, Pierre Moncuit Rosé, and an utterly fantastic Krug 164, this was maybe the best example yet of this ever so slightly variable bottle of Champagne. To be sure the family was riding a high of all being together, cooking perfect Beef Wellington, Dauphinois Potatoes, and my sons poached deep water lobster tails. The Krug was perfect. It had tart orchard fruit, light and nimble, saturated with mineral perceptions, it was airy, textured, full bodied, rich in a way, but so light. I'm oscillating, maybe because the wine was. Anyway, I love Krug when its on!

Extraordinary! Purchased from Joel Peterson’s ‘cellar’ (those he purchased from the cellar at Ravenswood when they were acquired), and goes to show, more than ever, how storage MATTERS. I used The Durand on the cork, but that was a waste - the cork was perfect. Wine has beautiful color, only slightly lightening at the edges, beautiful garnet hue. The acidity on this wine is the superstar, as I’ve never experienced anything like it in a Zin, yet the flavor profile is most certainly mature Zin. The vibrancy of this wine really shines, and while the fruit is just a bit dusty, the life and brightness in the wine is dominant and extremely enjoyable.

This young Chênes is already showing pretty, pretty traits. It is limpid and pure, in a Lagrange sort of way, with simple red fruits, and gorgeous clay mineral, and a nose as if a candy store were right next to a bakery. I believe this wine is destined for greatness. This has long, lively, and lovely swallow and finish.

Wow, this is so good right now. It is amazing to me how when these wines age they darken, yet lose the perception of viscosity. This has become fluid, and racy, with lovely acid; it's just popping from the glass. It still has some youthful traits like flowers, pollen, slate, and honey. But, it has transformed, and the slate is flinty, and the honey is more of an essence, dried, if you will, and gotten hints of spice. This is flat out lovely, and showing the elegance of one of my favorite vineyards!

Everything about this gorgeous wine rocks. It is elegant, silky, refined, aromatic, long, complex and attention-grabbing, in a discreet manner. Popped and poured, this is at full-maturity. What a wine this is! The color is still pretty deep; the nose is exquisite; ripe red berry fruits with some lovely floral notes and just a few hints of herbs; some dried tobacco and a hint of petrichor. The palate has such exquisite balance and depth... seems much younger than its 40 years. This was a library release from Lopez. Easily has another decade or two. Incredible stuff.
