Saturday tasting at Prince with Mount Mary and Wickhams Road (an offshoot of Hoddles Creek Estate). I approached with moderate trepidation as I've never really understood the fuss about Mount Mary.
And my non-fuss is reinforced. The Wickhams Road wines were quite good at that price point.
2015 Hoddles Creek Chardonnay Wickhams Road Yarra Valley
Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
Peach, stone fruit, slight toast and butter, slight sulphur…tangy, fresh, dry, slight muted fruit. Wet. Okay

2013 Mount Mary Chardonnay

toast, toasted nuts, spice>good quality oak, muted citrus, butter, lees…Citric fruit, a little flabbier then I was hoping, lacks acidity. Hmm.

2015 Hoddles Creek Chardonnay Wickhams Road Gippsland
Australia, Victoria, Gippsland
medium plus intensity aromas that are very peach and stone fruit, butter, spice, slight metallic notes, clean…juicy, fresh and tangy, perhaps a little tart but pleasant and quite long. Good especially at $16 a bottle.

2013 Mount Mary Triolet
Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
Medium minus intensity aromas of cream, butter, slight wax and honeysuckle and ripe citrus notes…tangy and spicy, there is a juiciness her but it lacks fruit, quite closed and a touch bitter. Hmm

2015 Hoddles Creek Pinot Noir Wickhams Road Yarra Valley
Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
Strawberry and raspberry, sweet spice, a certain wet stone quality…the fruit carries to the palate initially but it finishes short and bitter. Meh. Young vines?

2015 Hoddles Creek Pinot Noir Wickhams Road Gippsland
Australia, Victoria, Gippsland
Earthy, medium minus intensity aromas but upon vigorous agitation more dark fruit, clay and a slightly dusty quality…juicy, savoury, tangy, spicy, slight alcoholic warmth. Not much fruit but good structure and balance. Hmm. Interesting. Again, great price point.

2010 Mount Mary Pinot Noir
Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
Slight glue, slight oxidised, medium minus intensity aroma but with vigorous agitation some sour cherry ad red currant with cream and slight vanilla…slightly sour and juicy red cherry and currant, drying mid and front of mouth grip, long but not for me.

2013 Mount Mary Quintet
Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
Dusty red berries and plums, slight leather and earth…tart and slight astringent red fruit with talc textured tannins. Pretty awful for this price but I must confess I'm not a massive fan historically.
