Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.4 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 43 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 2/22/2024: Tasting great right now. Nothing not to like. 20% barrel fermentation to it. Fruit from four different counties. They just bought Keefer ranch apparently. The half bottles here are fermented in half bottles. (757 views)
Tasted by ziavino on 11/23/2023 & rated 92 points: Such a tremendous value in sparkling wine. Delicate yet creamy, with notes of Jonathan apple, Meyer lemon, and brioche coalescing throughout. Ample acidity cements the wonderful balance. A hint of nuttiness weaves in too, lingering on the medium-long finish. (1021 views)
Tasted by Bolzano2022 on 10/20/2023 & rated 89 points: Toasty. bready. could be little more acidic. (1112 views)
Tasted by crumblemore on 8/26/2023 & rated 89 points: Good sparkling. Elegant Blanc de Blanc style, with good flavor. Pale straw color with a persistent stream of bubbles. Bouquet of citrus, pear, jasmine, and green apple. Refreshing taste with lemon curd, minerality, and green apple. I thought that it was lacking a bit of body and flavor. Maybe, it was even a bit bland. Not my favorite sparkler but was pretty good! (1287 views)
Tasted by Northcraft on 7/2/2023 & rated 85 points: Good solid sparkling. Little higher fruit. Serve extra chilled. (1410 views)
Tasted by Quiller on 6/24/2023 & rated 88 points: Opened, poured and green apple on first sip. Liked that aspect of it, but also a bit tart, with a slightly unexpected/off finish (bitter?). OK, but maybe needs a bit more time. (1190 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 5/6/2023: Have not had one of these in a longggg time. It showed up today, included as part of a small tasting that featured Laherte Freres Ultradition and Pierre Gerbais Champ Viole. The latter is 100% Chardonnay, like this Schramsberg. Not sure if there is oak put on this Schramsberg but there is some signature of something toasted, barrique-like. Kinda grippy too, with green apple and pear. It lacks the concentration of the Gerbais, yet it has character and varietal expression that seems true, authentic. (1411 views)
Tasted by DrBad on 4/15/2023 & rated 90 points: Opened for family birthdays celebration and enjoyed with smoked trout appetizers. Fresh, creamy and light with crisp apple and lemon zest. Light mousse without a lot of persistence and a tad on the lemony side for my tastes but a glass was enjoyable. Decent value. (1150 views)
Tasted by mbrad on 3/26/2023: Really delicious. Really nice texture with small bubbles. Bright acidity with notes of pineapple, lemon, and pear (1106 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 3/11/2023 & rated 88 points: Dutch Dinner w/Jeoreon and Isobel, Valerie and Meredith (Chez Walker - New Hope, PA): A great start to the evening, a go-to casual sparkling wine for us. Slight chill, drank over 30 minutes

Consistent with Blan de Blanc style. Fined bubbles. Plate was crisp, orchard fruits, almond, brioche. (994 views)
Tasted by Takao on 3/6/2023: No rating as I took only a brief tasting note.

Orange, kumquat, flint, apple. Med body, high acid, med alcohol, med(+) finish. (480 views)
Tasted by lltl2021 on 1/23/2023 & rated 89 points: Lots of bubble, finish is a little bitter (1119 views)
Tasted by tedcholl on 1/11/2023 & rated 91 points: A very nice traditional method Blanc de Blancs Brut from the North Coast of California. Lots of persistent fine bubbles. Palate of lemon, green apple, yeast, and almond. At the price a solid sparkling. (994 views)
Tasted by oropeza on 1/2/2023: Citrus, apple, steeliness on the core, finishes on acidity... not bad. (914 views)
Tasted by Dad300 on 12/25/2022 & rated 90 points: ah.. the winner of Christmas eve and Christmas day. Bright Crisp. biscuity.. super fine bubbles. good mouth feel and viscosity the tension between the creaminess and acidity held up beautifully as we drank it through the late evening on the 24th and finished up while opening presents on Christmas day. why the winner? the dear wide asked if we had anymore.. and if we did not.. to get more.. (784 views)
Tasted by xyc on 12/23/2022 & rated 92 points: Pouring this sparkler into the flute is opening the oven door on baked brioche and lighting your eyes with a rising swarm of the tiniest bubbles. Well balanced on the palate highlighted by solid mineral core soupcons of citrus, nut, Chardonnay grape. Concentrated and serious and well made. (972 views)
Tasted by Steve Simmons on 11/12/2022 & rated 90 points: Had at Jacks cabin in massanutten while playing board games. 100% chardonnay. Super easy drinking and a crowd pleaser. Crisp apple at forefront, but has some creaminess and a clean finish. Agree with other posters the bubbles were too agressive (on swallowing) for my taste even after being open an hour.

Would he interesting to compare this back to back with the roederer estate NV that is about $10 cheaper (which we like). (815 views)
Tasted by PMJak11 on 11/12/2022 & rated 90 points: The Twin’s 5th Birthday Party!! Always solid. Similar to previous notes. (1002 views)
Tasted by oldwines on 11/7/2022 & rated 91 points: Tasted at a charity tasting event sponsored by a retailer in NJ. Very effervescent both in the glass when poured and initially on the palate. High acidity and minerality, probably related.. yeasty, lemony, effusive, tart apple. I am guessing that as I was rather later on getting to this table, this bottle seemed to have just been opened. I suspect this needs a little air and settle down a little to show at its best. (986 views)
Tasted by Nipuntalwar on 11/6/2022 & rated 87 points: PnP, inviting golden hue that leads heavily with apple and citrus aromas. Initially the bubbles are a bit aggressive, but it settles down in a few minutes. Nose and palate both are very green apple and citrus forward. Crisp and dry, while still having enough sugar to give it a nice texture. Not much brioche or yeast here as I would like. Finishes a bit bitter, but that adds complexity to this so I like that aspect. Expected better from my first Schramsberg given the hype this gets, but a little disappointed. Still enjoyable enough and a good time weekday sparkler. (755 views)
Tasted by WineTimeFineTime on 9/22/2022 & rated 89 points: Very apple-y, strong green apple with a bit of baked apple underneath, a bit of bitterness / copper at the finish. The bready-ness isn't integrated yet the way it is in previous vintages (still young). Lovely small bubbles and mouthfeel. Good but not great at this point in the journey. (886 views)
Tasted by PMJak11 on 9/10/2022 & rated 92 points: Mother-in-Law’s 70th birthday dinner toast. Always solid and lively. See previous notes on other bottles and vintages. (701 views)
Tasted by Uni No Uta on 8/29/2022 & rated 82 points: On pop, turns to foam in the mouth then dissipates as if it were never there. Settled down after a few minutes. There’s some apple, and a touch of melon later. Not much acidity or concentration, nothing making the mouth water. Vague hint of bitterness creeps in, which i appreciate. Acceptable enough pairing with salmon and Greek potatoes, but overall not terribly impressed for the price. I feel like I’ve had equal or better BdB at ten bucks cheaper. Not the most interesting offering from House Schram. Got a little more depth as it went along, so maybe it’ll be better in a year or two? Unmemorable at the moment. (675 views)
Tasted by TannicBeast on 8/14/2022 & rated 91 points: Med yellow, nice perlage. Med (+) intensity green apple, ripe lemon, apricot, wet stone and a pleasant toast note from 2 yrs lees aging and partial malo. Dry, but w/ 9 g/L RS, clean and crisp, with med to (+) acidity, med alcohol (12.5%). Med (+) flavor intensity, with a refreshing, clean and long finish. Drinking well upon release, with lots of potential if well cellared. This is a really crowd-pleasing style, with enough elegance to please and deceive Francophiles. (788 views)
Tasted by stamperb on 7/4/2022 & rated 86 points: Barely ripe and somewhat bitter apple with some hint of barrel age, however, the oak takes a distant back seat to the buttery mouthfeel and crisp fruit. (809 views)

The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
