Precise, linear in style rather than voluptuous
V good (890 views) | | Tasted by Wuhan Joe on 3/22/2022 & rated 90 points: Slightly closed but opened up after a couple of hours. Strawberry and cherry nose. Taste is tertiary: tobacco and forest floor with just a hint of red cherry. Tannins nicely balanced. Good acidity. Very pleasant but lacks wow factor. (1015 views) | | Tasted by Garyfranz on 2/12/2022 & rated 95 points: Earthy, dirt. Lots of pepper, very balanced. Slight red fruit on the finish. Vanilla on the finish and get more fruit, but no sweetness. (1099 views) | | Tasted by kmacd on 10/7/2021 & rated 93 points: A classic Brunello. The nose is alive with fruit - plum, strawberry with muted scents of tomato, pencil shavings, tobacco and oregano. Om the palate, the fruits are more muted and tomato, cherry, plum and oregano shine forth. The tannins are nicely integrated and it is drinking well now. It would be nice to try this again in a couple of years, but, alas, this is my last bottle. (1290 views) | | Tasted by Château de Farmer on 1/30/2021 & rated 87 points: Aging very quickly. This was largely tertiary, lots of tobacco notes. Acidity was still there so it wasn't stewed or unpleasant, but a real lack of fruit. Tannins are near fully resolved. Did open a bit with air, but not especially. Probably should have been drunk a couple years ago to get the fruit, if you have it, drink up. (1678 views) | | Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 8/4/2020 & rated 90 points: Bottle off the list over lunch at Blue Label. Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of herbal thyme, sour red cherries, cranberry, red licorice, austere stony minerals. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), sticky integrating high tannins, medium+ body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of sour red cherries, cranberries, herbal menthol thyme, red licorice. Medium finish. Good quality. Pleasant drinking with food. Opened up with more air, but still just lacking oomph and drive. Fruit from the subzones of Montalcino North (Canalicchio) and Castelnuovo dell’Abate. (1457 views) | | Tasted by SonnyChiba on 10/20/2019 & rated 90 points: Very solid Brunello. Should age effortlessly, but tasty now too. (1710 views) | | Tasted by Castello della Gatta on 9/7/2019 & rated 91 points: Nice solid Brunello. Medium bodied and medium plus acidity. Fruity style. (1561 views) | | Tasted by Bnelson29 on 8/10/2019: Bordeaux Glass Leslee: This wine needs some food paired to it. A massive wine, excellent for those who love BIG wine. This is a very serious wine! (1374 views) | | Tasted by thh18731 on 11/16/2018 & rated 91 points: Well balanced, excellent example of a Brunello. (1567 views) | | Tasted by wino_tim on 10/29/2018 & rated 88 points: Medium garnet. From magnum, decanted for an hour or two, this offers relatively quiet but quite classic aromas of dried red cherry, rosemary, spice and baked earth. Medium bodied, juicy but lithe on the palate with fine but firm tannins clipping the fruit, herb and earth flavors. Tasty but short and, at least from this format, in need of some time. (1487 views) | | Tasted by travelculture on 5/6/2018 & rated 91 points: Ready to drink now. Med to full bodied and heavy fruit out of the bottle, rapidly evolves and mellows after an hour but still good. Soft tannins. Excellent value. (1613 views) | | Tasted by Double-A on 1/2/2018 & rated 90 points: Red berry, mineral, vanilla and scorched nut nose. Ripe, rich and textured palate; savoury flavours; balanced, elegant finish. 4/5 (1823 views) | | Tasted by pdev on 12/7/2017 & rated 94 points: Beautifully fragrant, black licorice, leather, black cherry cordial, creme de cassis. Elegant, pretty style, aeromatic with enough structure. Sweet black cherry. (1739 views) | | Tasted by om42 on 11/7/2017 & rated 90 points: Well balanced but fruit seems weaker than expected. Round. Shorter finish. (1369 views) | | Tasted by Motz on 10/1/2017 & rated 91 points: Spicy and sweet aromatics (partially oak imparted), appealing energy and lift. Modern Brunello, yet sleek. It should be enjoyed over the next three to seven years. (1792 views) | | Tasted by burgundylover on 9/14/2017 & rated 90 points: Point Reyes -Osteria Stellina (1073 views) | | Tasted by Tim Heaton on 8/17/2017: Simple red fruits, clean lines, modest complexity and vibrancy. Red-fruited, avg acidity, tannins nearly resolved. Drink now thru 2024. NR

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)2012 Fattoria La Gerla Brunello di Montalcinohttps://www.wine-searcher.com/find/la+gerla+docg+brunello+di+montalcino+tuscany+italy/2012#t2SangioveseSANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se"). Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]
Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.Italy Italian Wines (ItalianMade.com, The Italian Trade Commission) | Italian Wine Guide on the WineDoctorTuscany Tuscany (ItalianMade.com) | TuscanytMontalcino Montalcino websiteBrunello di Montalcino Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino (Official DOCG website) |
