Tasted by Whine-oh on 2/27/2022 & rated 92 points: Pulled from cellar and stood up the am before drinking.Took to Italian restaurant. Bright red fruits, still fresh in the mouth and nose. Great paring with the Italian food tonight. Crowd favorite over the '07 Silvio Nardi Brunello. (664 views)
Tasted by braised on 2/5/2022: Brick colored, whispy sediment, tight nose on opening. Black tea, red fruits and earth inform an attractive and elegant wine. A nicely aged brunello, not exciting but solid. (648 views)
Tasted by Paul D on 1/9/2022 & rated 89 points: 3/6, vg cork. Decanted 1/2 hr.
Medium/deep garnet core, wide pale garnet rim. Nose shows spicy red fruit, floral notes, touch of nutmeg. Medium bodied, elegant, pure red fruit, florals, tea, very fine tannins, fresh acidity carrying a good length finish. Attractive and accomplished if not overly exciting. (761 views)
Tasted by Iam Redwood on 7/14/2021 & rated 95 points: Sadly my last bottle. Decanted for an hour. What a beauty, a classic Brunello and time has served it incredibly well. Grazie La Gerla...produzione e anno di alto qualita. (812 views)
Tasted by Iam Redwood on 5/17/2021 & rated 92 points: - Brick color - Definitely starting on the backhalf of life. Still tight after opening an hour before. Dense brickish colour aging well but jump on to the next bottle before its too late. (786 views)
Tasted by BostonDoug on 4/17/2021 & rated 91 points: Well made, tasty ... just needs a little time to open. Will update with day two. (411 views)
Tasted by Iam Redwood on 8/25/2020 & rated 93 points: - Crimsom color and aromas of tar, cherry, moldy cork and sherry - A classic Brunello. Musty on opening opens after decanting for 45 minutes with scents of barn yard, forest. Chocolate, slight tar, some rich cherry develop. Now 2.5 hours later, smooth structure and some tannin present. Lovely wine with character, again a classic. (731 views)
Tasted by Galrob on 6/17/2020: This was delicious. One sip and no doubt this is well made juice. Nicely balanced. Great fruit. Good acidity. I wish I had a few more. (732 views)
Tasted by Paul D on 10/18/2019 & rated 88 points: 2/6, excellent cork. Decanted 1/2 hour.
Medium/deep garnet core, pale garnet rim. Nose is developed, spicy, quite autumnal with figgy notes. Medium/full bodied, spicy, underlying red fruit, fresh/vibrant acidity, savoury, just a touch of balsamic, decent length finish. Still enjoyable but perhaps not quite the best bottle. (1154 views)
Tasted by studleytrey on 9/21/2019 & rated 92 points: Anniversary year of a favorite producer, so that's happy stuff. Medium (+) garnet with brickish edges, kinda veering towards tawny. Aromas of plums and black cherry, leather, black tea, soil, eucalyptus, green pepper, walnut, dark chocolate, and graphite. Medium body, acid, and finish, with flavors of dark fruits, lemon, leather, dark red fruits, orange peel, and mineral. Fantastic tonight. (1094 views)
Tasted by RSSchaefer on 3/4/2018 & rated 92 points: Really delicious. Holding up well. I’d drink now... (1890 views)
Tasted by hebatty on 8/9/2017: - Crimsom color. (2196 views)
Tasted by Paul D on 11/28/2015 & rated 92 points: Medium garnet core, medium/wide pale garnet rim. Nose is intense, with spicy/sour red cherry, florals, touch of blood and earth. Medium/full bodied, classic sour red cherry fruit, soft, silky tannins, floral notes, vibrant acidity, nice savoury red fruit tang and a slight tickle of tannin on a very good length finish. Delicious, classic Brunello, this is very drinkable now but should be fine for some time yet. (3972 views)
Tasted by BrunelloBob on 11/15/2015 & rated 91 points: PnP. Pretty, classic Brunello nose--black cherry most-like. All plum, and persistent on the palate. I'd drink this now. 90-91 pts (3330 views)
Tasted by igaf on 10/26/2015: Quite intense nose with sweet cherry, undergrowth and a rather unpleasant but hard to define note -- stewed or bad fruit/herbaceousness... Cleaned up somewhat with air. Med+ body, lowish acidity and tannins. Muted cherry fruit, touch of bitterness. Unimpressive. Med. length. (3805 views)
Tasted by Rich S on 2/27/2014 & rated 91 points: Consistent with previous bottle except this was a bit more savory and meaty than the last one. Enjoyed it quite a bit and wish I had bought a few more at the sale price paid. (4719 views)
Tasted by Jkrepshaw on 12/31/2013 & rated 93 points: Awesome notes. Earthy and big taste
(4175 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 7/29/2013: Medium depth. Some black cherry on the nose. Medium to full bodied, a bit of heat. Not great clarity of fruit, but good complexity of green notes and lots of soil. (3656 views)
Tasted by Rich S on 6/23/2013 & rated 91 points: Popped and poured. Dark crimson color with some chunky sediment. Really nice right out of the gate with a great brunello nose of red cherry and currant along with some sweet tobacco, a bit of bloody meat and some chocolate and oak aromas. On the palate this wine was primarily chocolate covered cherries with some plum and red currant flavors along with some vanilla and toasty oak on the back end. Good acidity, medium tannins, smooth mouthfeel and a nice finish. Somewhat lighter than I expected and really enjoyable to drink right now so I do not see any reason to cellar this long term. (3404 views)
Tasted by bestdamncab on 5/17/2013 & rated 88 points: Lovely dark fruit on the nose with hints of earth and barnyard, more of the same on the palate, easy to sip and enjoy, medium body and medium finish. The bottle was opened six hours earlier. (3582 views)
Tasted by Double-A on 2/26/2013 & rated 93 points: Rounding cherry jam, spice, strawberry tea nad weathered wood nose. Medium-full, warming and spiced palate with peppery tannins. Good acidity and solid, assertive finish.
4.5/5 (437 views)
Tasted by fabiova on 2/1/2013: Varese - Il Nibio - Despedida EMEA (2597 views)
Tasted by godx on 7/5/2012 & rated 89 points: Italy 2012 - Milan; 7/4/2012-7/5/2012 (Milan): From 375ml. Spicy and earthy nose with dark red fruits and hints of black licorice. Light to medium body, fine tannins and good acidity. Dark cherry and tobacco on the palate with a soft and lighter mouthfeel. This is showing more secondary characteristics than I would have thought considering its age. There is a bit of heat on the finish, which is really my only complaint. Drink or hold for 3-5+ years. Very good. (3159 views)

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
