Nice complex aroma - floral and herbal notes, lemon peel, a hint of vanilla, and some crushed stone. On the palate it has lemon, citrus peel, pear, and a little spice. Medium plus acid, medium body, and a medium to long finish.

This wine is pale, lemon, with youthful aromas of honeysuckle, lemon, lime, vanilla, and pear. This wine has bright acidity, and the palate matches the aroma’s, and what’s noteworthy is the medium plus finish that ends with vanilla and pear dominating. The citrus acidity, and the vanilla and pear finish contrast makes for an interesting wine.

Back in August of this year, I reviewed the 2019 vintage of today’s wine. Loved it of course. So much so that when I received an email for the 2020 vintage, I grabbed hold. A few months later, wallah, another email arrives, this time for the 2021 vintage, and at a pretty hefty discount. No question I would snap up some more.
What’s the wine that has me so enthralled?
Avancia Godello Old Vines 2020
It shouldn’t be surprising that I love Godello. I liken the wine produced to be very similar to Sauvignon Blanc, and you should know how much I like that grape.
It’s hard to argue the quality of the wine considering it comes from one of the oldest traditional vineyards planted in Valdeorras, made entirely of organically grown Godello grapes, and then spends time in French oak puncheons and demi-muids for 10 months. It should be noted that Jorge Ordóñez Selections is the importer and was the first broker to introduce Godello to the United States.
The wine that emerges is vibrant throughout, with citrus and stone fruit notes along with a touch of ginger and an underlying minerality. Such an excellent wine alone or to go with my Salmon on a bed of Mashed Potatoes with Seared Brussel Spouts and a Spicey Aioli. Yum!
Stay tuned for the third episode of this wine when I review the 2021, completing my triplets!
As one of the premiere producers of Godello, if not the best, they have a sibling called the Avancia Cuvée de O Godello, which I have also reviewed, as well as the Avancia Nobleza Godello Old Vines, which is on the shelf of my local shop and I am seriously thinking about picking some up. The latter used new oak for a part of the fermentation. Sounds yummy.
Whichever one you might choose, or see on the shelf, these are great wines and shouldn’t be missed. Maybe even consider having triplets yourself, albeit, three different wines!
Cheers
