A bottle full of unexpecteds! My final bottle of wine from this winery that I had searched for years to encounter, experience and obtain because they’re not well represented in CA. For several years running, I had read about their Syrahs and so, they had moved to the top of my wish list, yet were nowhere to be found. Until, on a chance visit to Woodinville during our trip to Seattle, I finally made it! Unfortunately, they had few Syrah’s to taste, having sold out well in advance of our visit. Lucky for me, they make Cabs and Cab blends and I’ve always liked WA Cab. So, we drank through the abbreviated lineup and I signed up for their Syrah-dominant Club. However, after just two shipments and with a as many things going wrong, I cancelled and the bottles were consumed without much thought or advanced planning; all of them failing to impress. This bottle, likely the cellar straggler because of its Red Mountain lineage and my past experiences with Cabs from the AVA, having me conclude the wines to be unyielding Brutes! As was my practice with big young-ish reds, upon choosing it as the bottle to accompany an assertive, chipotle-adobo pork loin, I immediately decanted it and this is where the unexpecteds started. Deep purple color with assertive berry aromatics but berries of the dark red to light blue variety (not black). It was when I took the customary early taste that I was literally blown away with how round, perfectly balanced and abundantly approachable this was; dare I say “pretty”, which is not a descriptor you’d ever associate with the varietal, the AVA nor the winery style. I enjoyed each and every sip; as much with the meal as on its own. Unsure if this was a case of everything going just right, I’d have to imagine that this is the best Syrah from Efeste, if not one of the best the state has to offer.

Delicious with a pleasenr cherry note. Slight hint of white pepper to give it a well-rounded fruit forward balanced syrah.

Decanted one hour
Dark with violet tinge
Medium + body, lighter than expected for Red Mountain, beautiful dark balance. Long smooth tannins on finish
