You kill my father, prepare to die. I just watched The Princess Bride for like the 1000th time and this seemed the perfect wine for the occasion. I've loved Gramercy's syrahs, but haven't had much experience with their other wines, save their excellent rose and serviceable cabs. New World tempranillo hasn't really shown much enduring success, and while the jury may still be out on this one, the early verdict is not promising. The nose is loaded with vanilla and dill, the calling card of American oak. While I get that this is what works in Rioja, it seems heavy-handed here, and overpowers the character of the wine, which barely speaks of tempranillo. I was hoping this would mellow by day 2, but it actually became more pronounced, and made it hard to assess the underlying wine. Ripe, kirsch-like fruit, coconut, and black raspberry. Smooth tannins on the finish, but this is not my cup of tea.

6 of 6 beach Tempranillo tasting fairly dimly and did have earthiness in addition to the dark fruits but had trouble competing
