  • Delicious.
To the patient go the spoils, and sometimes, to the very patient go the spoiled. With Forey, I have seen bottles closed for years, only to discover belatedly that they opened up, and then rapidly declined. In thi present case, this "simple" Bourgogne, now with 15 years of age, was beautiful in all respects - and the vigneron is deserving respect for this brilliant piece of wine making.
2009 was, of course, a very BIG year, the wines typically delivering outsize characteristics of flavor on a grand scale. For many, 2010 was a more classic vintage, showcasing the typical expectations of subtlety and restraint. But, in this example, the wine was surprisingly gentle, but in the manner of an iron fist in a silk glove.
The scent was quiet, soft, with subtle hints of sous bois and still fragrant fruit, dark, with glints of lighter red fruits. The taste was remarkably gentle - a jab lightly landed, just enough to signal there was something greater held back. And, as the evening progressed, so did the wine, building ever more sustained, more layered, more nuanced, and longer. Never would I call this a powerful wine, but the experience of drinking it was a powerful one.

This tasting suggests the vintage has years ahead of it, properly stored, but I can't imagine a future bottle providing better (nonetheless, I have more bottles in the cellar... hooray!).

    Rated +3 on a scale of -1 to +3.

  • From magnum. Meadow's note sums this wine up very well: touch of heat, but a nice, balanced wine at this level, with good pinot flavors but moderate depth and complexity. Smoother, rounder with extended air time, so I'd expect it to cellar well for several years, as good Bourgogne is wont to do. Unusual to find a regional in Magnum.

  • Dry smokey red fruit on the nose with earth and tobacco overtones. On the palate very smooth, lighter fruit flavor than on the nose for sure while retaining the earthiness. For $25 per bottle this is a very drinkable wine right now and should get better in the bottle. Great value.

  • Nice nose, a good deep nose of fruit, some hint of wood, black cherry, cranberry but a bit artificial. On taste good intensity decent flavors but marred by a dairy note from the oak treatment. Ok but not stellar. Drinkable, but a pass given some flaws.
