  • 2004 Black Hills Estate Nota Bene

Root Day - Wine to lower end of neck in bottle. Cork sound with wine ingress 3/4 of the way to the top. Kudos to Black Hills for putting a proper length high quality cork in these bottles. Double decanted (into carafe and back into cleaned bottle) off about a tablespoon of wine and sediment. Some fine sediment and a couple of small hard sediment chunks. Wine has a translucent garnet core which extends out to a medium width edge that’s got some orange/browning colouring. Nose is glorious - blackcurrant, blackberry, some oak and vanilla, red flowers, forest floor and just the tiniest hint of leather. On the palate the fruit is there with a medium to heavy mouthfeel that’s ultra smooth and velvety. The flavours are mature with blackcurrent, leather, sou bois, tobacco and spice. The spice, tobacco and some dried black fruit continue into the long finish. Ultra classy and complex wine. This is fully mature and drinking perfectly right now. It could hold another 3 or so years but this to me is as good as it’s going to get.

  • 2004 Gaston Chiquet Champagne Special Club Brut

Root Day - Lemon coloured in glass with pristine tiny bubbles that lasted and lasted. Nose is brioche, citrus and toast. On the palate it’s light but intense with the brioche, some toast and the citrus continuing. There’s a delicate complexity to this wine that I must admit I didn’t pay attention to until the last few sips because it was so enjoyable and delicious. No sign of any real maturity other than the complex flavours and ridiculously small persistent bubbles.

  • 2005 Pierre Sparr Riesling

Root Day - A found in the cellar bottle with Stelvin cap. Wine at normal bottle level. Pours dark lemon into the glass. Nose is delicate but penetrating - very light petrol, white flowers, lime, honey and a bit of pink pearl eraser. On the palate it’s quite rich and mouthfilling but still has medium plus acidity. The flavours are apple, white peach, pink pearl eraser, mineral, some chalk and lime. The finish is long with the florals, minerality, apple and honey all combined. What a wonderful bottle of wine! It tastes like a 5 year old wine but has such class and elegance. I see there are still 6 bottles in the CellarTracker cellars. My last bottle but there’s no need for those that still have one in their cellar to rush to consume. It should happily rest for up to another 3 or so years if not more.
