Locale: Prague, Province? Slavic nations are too diverse for that, Czech Republic
Favorite region: The stretch between the pour and the memory
Dream wine: Sonberk Riesling VOC any vintage
Great wines make everyone feel the same way. They donate emotions.

My synesthetic expressions aim to describe that energy of wine. That’s what I like to rhapsodise about.

I don’t use a verbalized framework for scoring because words - unlike a watering Syrah - are dry. I am an enthusiast, not an examiner.

  • NV Claypool Cellars Champagne Pachyderm Cuvée Select Brut Cormoyeux

Bought 5-7 years ago from the owners - a lovely couple whom we met through our wonderful and deeply missed friend Steve S.

Very well integrated bubbles - age has helped. Little mousse and a gentle sensation on the tongue.

Lightish yellow. Nose of lemon, green apple and anise pastry. The dry, mid-sized palate has tension and an influential level of citrus bitterness, which gives it a pensive, almost weighty kind of energy. Yes, energy. Mental energy. Not calories but thoughts and emotions.

Drinkers of puer tea will approve of this organic bitterness that makes all gratification both delayed and possible. It is literally asking me to switch off, lean back and dive in. Like there is something beyond.

This is why people appreciate aged wines. They, like Steve, know something.

It is drinking at 89-91 points but it’s giving me emotions and thoughts at 95-97 pts. I love it for what it’s giving me.

  • 2019 Diamantakos Naoussa

Tasted at Mavrommatis - a Greek bistro at a food court in Paris. The olives here are delicious!

Brownish red. Despite the colour, the nose is quite closed. 15 minutes since pour this slowly reveals cherry, raw cacao nibs and vanilla. There’s enough reserve in the nose to let rise a delicate, humidifying note of fresh leafs.

The palate is more backward, with tannins a little rough around the edges and the acidity and plenitude of fruit falling behind. It has the structure of a Cab Sauv from a cool vintage but that’s not balanced by density, width or depth.

For all the vivacious acidity and crunchy fruit you may find elsewhere, this wine still has hints of the Xinomavro signature. As the tannins eventually recede, the creamy texture temporarily comes to touch.

Unlike me, fatty dishes might benefit from a wine like this.

  • 2022 Sonberk Pálava V.O.C. Sonberk

I’ve now had this wine three times by glass and once by the bottle this week alone. It’s an absolutely gorgeous wine that is both widely appealing and fun to drink at the same time. Pity it’s practically sold out!

10/3/2023 7:48:00 PM - Hello Fractalage, apologies for having been away for a while. I hope to taste another wine, soon. I'm sure there are many great commentators on here with far more knowledge, expressive touch and sensitivity than I have. I hope to get there one day.
