  • 2019 Laurent Tribut Chablis 1er Cru Montmains

A very powerful but too young Tribut Montmains 2019. Despite the fact many say this is a former Forest parcel adjacent or near / part of the Vincent Dauvissat one, this wine is a very opposing style to Dauvissat’s. This could use a longer decant and if drinking pop and pour, it is very austere with very high acidity, strong bitter and preserved lemon and pith flavors, unlike the Dauvissat Forest of the same vintage that has more almond paste flowers and balanced fruit. However with that said it pairs nicely with fatty briney oysters, and seafood with cream sauce, grilled noble and dry aged grilled fish (with richer sauces) fairly easily and mellows out a little. The wine didn’t budge a whole lot within 2 hours. Can age 8 to 10 years easily. Hold if you have them.

  • 2021 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese

While the retail pricing of this has gone up, it was great fun to taste the vintage and young. A bit lighter on the aromatics but definitely obvious stone fruit, green apples, lemon, light florals and just barely protruding honey. A touch of reduction backed by a most delightful bracing mouth watering acidity that's quite elegant, that also cleans the fruit at the start and all the way into the finish. Despite this being a Spatlese, there is just about enough residual sugar to make it feel like it is not (perhaps of the cool vintage), though the sourness, tartness, and acidity are more prominent, but in a balanced and great way. With time, mineral notes come forth (the essence of the wine). The sour forward elegance that has a small hint of meyer lemon like bitterness, makes this wine even more addicting. At this young age it needs a more specific food profile match, but is quite pleasurable to enjoy as is. This acidity will ensure mid to long term aging, though I can't imagine now how this will be with another 8 to 10 years, and what will happen to the fruit. Fascinating wine, I look forward to tasting 2022 young as a comparison.

  • 2020 Domaine de Bois D'yver Chablis

Domaine Bois D'yver is located in Courgis, and the estate belongs to the father of the iconic winemaker Pattes Loup Thomas Pico, who manages that portion in parallel to Pattes Loup (his mainstay). This domaine only offers AOC village Chablis, but Thomas feels that this area can represent and create wines under his winemaking style in a way that reflects the sense of place. I would say the profiles of this wine matched the non Vente D'Ange Chablis of Pattes Loup (and non mise tardive), although I prefer the Mise Tardive Pattes Loup wines far more as there is more fruit to balance the pungency, acidity, and strong savory components. The profile is not typical Chablis, and has a nose of pickled lemon, unripe pear, and quince, and notable salinity in the mix. It is a style I am not used to and can be very linear in a way, but is certainly better with food. Unfortunately not even a great match with lobster or raw oysters, which is a shame.

8/29/2022 9:12:00 AM - Hello VincentMorey, I think it is a good idea to wait for at least another 3 years with your bottle of 2017 Close de Maltroie before opening it. Will be interesting to read your tasting note then... Cheers Bandreas
