  • 2017 Cappellano Barolo Piè Rupestris Otin Fiorin (Gabutti)

Enjoyed at Little Pearl. PnP for 2 hours. This only took 30 minutes after opening to start unfolding. There were aromas of dried rose petals, cherry pits, and hints of leather and tobacco. On the palate, the Rupestris was lighter bodied, with silky tannins that provide a smooth backbone for the wine's core of darker purple fruits. Notes of black cherry, blackberry, and licorice meld with subtle hints of spice and mint. The finish is long and satisfying, with the wine's tannins and acidity in perfect harmony. This will only get better with cellaring, but it can also be enjoyed today. Easily one of the top 5 Barolos in the more difficult '17 vintage. 95

  • 1997 Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Sperss

Gaja Vertical Celebration: Double decanted 4 hours before opening. The 1997 Gaja Sperss is a wine of profound depth and nuance. The bouquet is intensely aromatic, with notes of medium and darker fruits, spices, and hints of leather and tobacco. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and richly textured, with a core of black cherries and sweeter, brighter raspberries. All of this was framed by well-integrated tannins and a nice bighting fresh level of acidity, providing structure and depth to the wine. Notes of licorice, espresso, and subtle hints of truffle add layers of complexity to the wine's flavor profile. The finish is extremely long with the wine's fruit and tannins in perfect harmony. This was the WOTN for everyone. One of the best Barolos I've ever had before, and I can't wait to enjoy this again in 5-10 years! 96-97

  • 2015 Comm. G.B. Burlotto Barolo Monvigliero

Gaja Vertical Celebration: PnP for an hour. Very consistent with other notes. This was a little bit of a roller coaster, offering flashes of freshness, silkiness, and bewildering complexity, with notes of ripe strawberry and hints of dusty rose. At times, it tightened up with firm tannins. However, this has all the stuffing to be an unforgettable wine. I can't wait to try this again in 5-10 years. 94-95
