  • 2010 Domaine Roger Belland Santenay 1er Cru Gravières

1.1 hectares planted 1968, a year in French oak (30% new), per producer. No whole clusters per Burghound. Essentially pure ruby throughout, no real sign of age. Nose centers on cranberry with a bit of earth and hints of minerality. In the mouth mature, spicy, mouth-filling, persistent flavors of cranberry and plum, really pleasant minerality, and a fine, long, strong finish. Not an extraordinary wine but still genuinely suave and a pleasure to drink. Little sediment but also little tannin, so I'm guessing it's close to its best window.

  • 2017 Quentin Jeannot Maranges 1er Cru La Fussière

Very light ruby, near translucent, transparent at the edge of the glass. Fine nose of rose petals, a bit of orange zest, perhaps fallen leaves and tobacco or smoke, and stones/minerality. Light but quite lengthy palate continues rose and orange flavors as well as strawberry, shows rather high acid, not overdone, tannin on the light side, and confirms the complexity that the nose let me to expect .

A year ago the acid in this was nearly overwhelming, and while I'm sure it is still too young, I don't think that I will allow the couple remaining to last long. Special wine imho, wish I had more.

  • 2018 Aubert Lefas Bourgogne Les Grandes Carelles

7/5/ 2020: Not quite translucent but beautiful jewel-like ruby in color throughout. Nose of dark cherry and iron/blood as well as complex mineral elements. On the tongue, again notes of cherry, blood, pepper, spice, and minerals, acid just right, a seriously long finish, and (surprisingly to me) smooth with no real tannin. Performs well above its official AOC – I’ve drunk less impressive 1er crus. Lovely with King Salmon kebab, rice, and tzatziki; less so with Brussels sprouts with a shallot/Sherry glaze, as the Sherry was a bit sweet. I should have bought a case, but my source now has no more. Frankly delicious, and I’d expect it to improve for a couple of years despite the lack of tannin at this point. I understand that this is 90% Pommard, mostly from whole clusters, and was made with 10% new American oak. Sometimes heresy works.

Second try 8/31/2020: Almost translucent pure ruby throughout. Nose more muted than prior bottle: a hint of dark cherry, more of complex mineral elements, and a bit of oak. On the tongue, body on the lighter side of medium, with cherry, spice, minerals, and again some oak, tasty acid, and still smooth with just a little tannin. Acid more than grip or intensity, but a really pleasant long cherry-infused finish. Still well above its official AOC, still delicious, still wish I'd bought many more. I think the 10% new American oak showed more this time, but, if heresy, still works.

Drunk after a late birthday present to myself -- that is, my first haircut since early March and the Chicago lockdown just after. I thought it deserved a bit of celebration, and this was just fine.
