  • 2005 Château Certan de May

Reading through the TNs (mine from 02/23 included) there seems to be some bottle variation with this wine. This time we were lucky, very lucky, and witnessed the greatness of the Pomerol plateau.
The colour is a dark red turning to mahogany, slightly translucent and with a beautiful glossy surface. On the nose the wine is strikingly complex and changed multiple times over the course of two hours (we decanted into a carafe and started drinking): Incense, tobacco, vitamin c, a strong ferrous note and - while not a fruit-driven wine - there are also sweet cherries and bittersweet mulberries. In the mouth the wine is exquisitely silky and medium-bodied. While it gains in intensity and sweetness over time it remains light-footed and on the elegant and understated side of Pomerol. The wine seems to have reached its peak with only some unobtrusive tannin left and the sweet dark fruits woven into the tertiary scents, however, there are no signs of a decline. Overall we loved this old-fashioned vin de terroir!

  • NV Chavost Champagne Blanc D'Assemblage Brut Nature

Disgorgement 07/23. Only a very basic TN as we had this champagne using paper cups while hiking on ascension day. On the nose stinky Comté and ripe apples (cider!), some yeast and a whiff of flowers, too. In the mouth this is bonedry and fresh, but fortunately not too sharp. Instead it is vinous and quite easily drinkable thanks to its good extract and texture and its moderate bubbles. Aromatically this is not about fruit but salty minerality with a solid finish. While not as refined and substantial as a Roederer Starck brut nature, it's a champagne with character and very enjoyable in a rustic way.

  • NV Ruinart Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut

Lovely! Which was a bit of a surprise as a recent bottle was rather mediocre, not this one. Bottle-variation or simply more time post disgorgement? As both were consumed at restaurants I don't know. This here has a clear pale colour and tiniest bubbles. On the precise nose are sweet lemon confit, flowers and some sweet pastry. In the mouth the wine is perfectly balanced: Medium-bodied, but with a concentrated core of sweet fruit, lively and fresh, but also beautifully textured due to the very fine perlage. In comparison the mediocre bottle before showed both lighter flavours and a harsher mouthfeel. On the finish the sweetness is nicely controlled by quite a lot of chalky freshness. All in all this Ruinart BdB reminds me of a recent Perrier-Jouet BdB, however, everything dialed up a little bit without sacrifycing elegance and freshness. Wow!

4/17/2021 12:12:00 AM - Dear Eric, thank you for your very kind comment. On the Boillot one thing I noted after posting my note is that this wine is at its most enjoyable in the first hour, after which the structure comes roaring in like a tannin tsunami! The Boillot Beaune 'Les Epenotes' is an easier wine that doesn't trip down the same tannin lane. Both are excellent. By the way, I think German Riesling is the greatest white wine on earth. I am a huge fan of Keller, but most especially of Clemens Busch's admittedly slightly eccentric wines. With the better Rieslings you get the minerality and taughtness of Chablis plus the sensuous pleasures of Montrachet but something else again. I can't get my friends to understand the beauty and complexity of German Spatlese styles, which I find very sad. I think these are extraordinary - so much more than semi-sweet.
