  • 2010 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia

I’m happy to report that the 10 Rancia is cruising along nicely and pretty much in a state that would be expected for a top vintage, 14 years in. Some early signs of maturity, more so on the nose with a beguiling combo of floral infused cherries and some cedar poking a round too. Seamlessly transitions to the palate, but with the addition of the muscular structure of 2010, every thing seems to be well placed for a long term trajectory going forward. Worth checking out now, even better days ahead.

  • 2022 Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Bianco Cuvée delle Vigne Niche Montalto

Even before tasting this I knew it was going to be great. And it lived up to the pregame hype. I really like Carricante with past versions, but this was wratched up a notch or three in terms of intensity, volume, depth, you get the idea. Bone dry with terrific cut, this also had a playful mid palate textural sweetness, some tropical fruits and the like. But this was fleeting as the back half and finish closed with a stony quality and crushed seashells that had me more than once think I was drinking a very good Chablis PC. Excellent.

  • 2020 Domaine Lionnet Cornas Pur Granit

Decanted 3hrs. Starts off with a bit of funk, almost akin to the smell of opening a fresh can of tennis balls which I oddly found appealing. With additional air, the nose unfolded with some layers of sweet white flowers and some savories, looking good. Cleary this infanticide, but I like what I saw under the hood, very much b&b in style, that is briar and brambles, some Provencal herbs such as sage and lavender, and oh yes a lovely core of dark pressed berries. Lovely balance. Pretty dang close to textbook Cornas in my book. Buy this without hesitation to scratch a proper N. Rhone itch.

6/19/2023 8:57:00 AM - Re: The WA vineyards are all on the eastside of the Cascade Mt Range (which runs north -south right in the center of the state) and thus, a much drier and warmer climate. It has been discussed that with climate change that high profile areas in CA may become to hot and WA could be the beneficiary - let's hope this is a gift that never gets sent...

Thankfully, I didn't have to murder my family for a life insurance payout in order to acquire some 19 Clape :)

6/18/2023 3:52:00 PM - Dear Dale M, Welcome aboard the Crazy Train. I see you enjoyed the Max F Richter - agree it represents outstanding value. We don't get a lot of exposure to USA wine in Oz and almost never those of Washington state. Are the vineyards generally coastal, or inland and how is climate change affecting the growing conditions?
