  • Really lovely. Mix of red fruits with interesting earthy savory notes. Plenty of structure here to age further. Does very well with food.

  • Like a Late Bottled Vintage Port on the nose. In the mouth dark fruits, medical herbs, slight vanilla and oakiness. Full bodied with a good mix of tannins and acidity. Not an every day wine but will brighten up every holiday and served with food.

  • First Musar. Rather distinctive aromatic and flavor profile for what I assume are the usual Bordeaux varietals(?). Did well with 24 hours of air.

  • Decanted for 1.5 hours. Lots of red cherry here, very fresh with good acidity and strong tannins. This is a racey wine, much going on, and feeling quite young at the moment.

  • Prism II w/ Sashi (Prism, Berlin): @prism. Mid-inflection but has a powerful jolt of slightly raisinated black fruit. Lovely VA too. It’s quite musar-y but still young. Definitely a bold, almost port-like style on the nose right now. But still balanced and light on the palate.

From Jacqueline (wine director): “Due to insufficient rain in spring, the whole life cycle of the vine was almost 30 days delayed, which led to a harvest that only finished in mid October. With that comes very concentrated fruit and a bit more power than we’re used to.”

  • It was Father’s Day and I had decided on grilled rack of lamb for dinner so I selected this bottle of 2011 Chateau Musar rouge from our cellar. According to Musar’s records, the 2011 vintage was one of the most challenging since the early 1990's. It was ultimately a late-maturing vintage with harvest taking place on October 13th, the latest since the 1983 vintage!

I decanted this bottle about eight hours prior to dinner. It should be noted that immediately upon opening, the bouquet was strikingly gorgeous with powerful aromatics that were obvious from several feet away and this trait carried through until dinner time.

In the glass, the wine presents a deep garnet color. Slightly turbid with a near opaque core. On the nose, black plums, blackberries, cassis, tobacco, organic earth, exotic spices, leather, spiced meat, and pomegranate. I detect a touch of VA as well. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the nose with an added bit of red rope licorice. Lovely, long, savory…amazing. This was a brilliant compliment to the lamb (which was served with beets and goat cheese and fattoush) and everything I wanted in a Musar tonight. Drinking well now with a hefty decant and I expect well cellared examples to drink well past 2035.

  • Opened two bottles of this with leg of lamb. Double decanted, but only so I could pour from the bottle. Spices, stewed fruit and other tertiary aromas and tastes stating to take hold. Good tannins and great with food. Continued drinking the next night. Tannins settled down some, and it was actually an excellent pairing with Chicken Marsala.

  • Sweet spices and herbs in the quite expressive bouquet. On the palate a lot of sweet spices, friendly and juicy acidity and mild tannin which is slightly drying in the finish.

  • A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Cinsaut, one third of each. The vintage 2011 in Beqaa was very difficult with a cool yet dry beginning, followed by very rainiy April and May, delaying the grape maturation. The grapes were still underripe by the time they are normally harvested and ultimately the harvest was finished only by mid-October - the latest in the history of Musar, save for the vintage 1983. Fermented spontaneously in concrete, aged in oak barrels for a year. Blended together in February 2015, left to marry for a few years and bottled in summer 2015. 14% alcohol, 2 g/l residual sugar and 5,7 g/l acidity. Aerated in a decanter for four hours before tasting the wine.

Deep, luminous and still quite youthful black cherry color. The nose feels savory, a bit restrained and somewhat not unlike a warm-vintage Bordeaux with attractive, layered aromas of ripe blackcurrants, some tobacco, a little bit of bretty leather, light sweet notes of black cherries, a hint of earth and a touch of balsamic lift. The wine feels ripe, silky and very balanced on the palate with a moderately full body and nuanced flavors of ripe forest fruits and juicy dark fruits, some savory notes of earthy spices, a little bit of sweeter strawberry, light nuances of pipe tobacco, a bretty hint of leathery funk and a touch of fresh blueberries. The overall sense is enjoyably firm and balanced, thanks to the high acidity and ripe yet quite ample medium-plus tannins that slowly pile up on the gums. The finish is ripe, juicy and moderately grippy with a lengthy, layered aftertaste of tobacco and sweet black cherry, some leathery notes of brett, a little bit of wizened fig, light Bordeaux-like nuances of blackcurrant-driven dark fruit, a hint of peppery spice and a touch of earth.

A fine and sophisticated vintage of Musar that has taken a turn towards more Bordelais style; I guess this was due to a combination of blackcurrant-driven Cab fruit gaining some emphasis along with a fine touch of vague, leathery brett funk - something that the wine didn't show when I tasted it the last time in late 2019. Back then the wine showed good sense of balance, but came across as very clean, polished and somewhat straightforward in nature. Now, with 3½ additional years under its belt, the wine has picked up some depth and complexity without really compromising any of its structure. Originally I didn't know what to think of this vintage - it seemed a bit anonymous with the very characterful 2010 vintage and the sweet, porty 2012 vintage. However, now it seems there is nothing to worry about: this wine is evolving steadily in the right direction and with enough aging it will turn into a fine mature Musar. Solid value at 39,90€.

  • Has really opened up since my '18 note and now in its prime. Black à point plum and dark hedge berry fruit, earth, some strap, dry spice and mellowing out tannins.
Given its accelerating maturity, a Musar for the medium haul. Now till 2026. 91?+

  • Excellent Musar. As always, give it plenty of time to warm from cellar temperature, including a good couple of hours or more in decanter. Plenty of life in this bottle.

  • Drinking beautifully. Powerful on the nose and palate, but still delicate in some respects. Moderate tannins and acid. Slight stewed fruit with a little bit of heat. Mediterranean spice. Slight oxidation on finish. Decanted and drank. No need to wait. Enjoyed with rack of lamb.

  • Wow. What a beautiful wine. Showing complexity and delicacy at every level. Over several hours in carafe, wine displayed lovely floral notes of eucalyptus, tea, currants, cherry, tar and chocolate. Light-bodied and very smooth on the palate. Drinking perfectly. Don’t ignore this one. It was like catching a glimpse of that rare and beautiful bird resting for a moment in your garden.

  • Plumb, cherry and dates lead to a robust concentrated pallet. Powerful finish with dried herbs, celery stalk, and tones of lush dark fruit. Polished with lots left in the tank. Drink 2025-2039.

  • Hmm, my rating keeps going up for this wine. Opened it a few hours before drinking. Convinced us with fantastic nose, excellent structure and balance. Didn't show any sign of being too old, seems to be in a perfect drinking window now. But no hurry

  • Decanted for 2 hours. Straight out of the bottle it smelled like sour cherries and had a luscious tartness. After opening it had a scent of black cherries, mulberries, and chocolate. Taste of cherry, plum, olive, blackberries, with strong acidity balancing velvety tannins. This wine is still young, but a joy to drink nonetheless. Excellent, long finish.

  • Similar as my tasting note earlier this year. Nice to drink this next to 2010 Valdicava brunello. The brunello has a more masculine and serious structure, but this definitively has personality and is a wine worth having in your cellar.

  • A delicious fruity Cabernet blend in a Bordeaux style, closer to a St Emilion or a Napa Cab blend. Ready to drink now after 2 hour slow ox. Paired it with Lebanese food. Enjoy!

  • Family weekend tasting; 11/13/2021-11/14/2021 (Egmond): Still young, could easily handle 10-15 years based on the structure. Raisins, figs, black fruit, red cherries, plum, even a hint of banana, mushrooms, oranges
Medium+ tannnins, medium+ acidity, long finish

  • Fabulous with structure and poise. Loads of plums, raisin, fig newton and dates on the nose. Decadent and a long finish. Blackberry, green olive, roses dominate after an hour and a half decant. This is perfectly balanced. Serious acidity and fruit. Fabulous. Drink 2025-2040.

  • Highly recommend. Superb wine and still young - this wine easily has another 20 years to go under appropriate cellaring conditions although at this point already in a reasonable drinking window with a decant. A very reasonable QPR wine at our acquisition cost at Total Wines and with further aging and more air I fully expect a score improvement of at least 1-2 more points. Every few years we go back to Musar and they never disappoint. Decanted for about an hour and could have done with an even longer decant. Warm nose of red cherry and dark fruit. Soft mouth feel, good tannic core with well balanced oak and a beautiful long lingering aftertaste. Deep red color. Initially dark cherry, raspberry, sweet stewed plum and rose on the palate with a darker more serious earthy and smoky mid- and late palate. A true (very) warm climate Bordeaux.

  • Beautiful, fruit forward Musar. Had alongside a 2004 Musar and it was fun to mark the differences. This was much darker red in color, and had a darker bouquet as well. The nose was full of fragrant black fruits, but still had red cherries and spice. The mineral qualities were more subdued. It was very smooth and well integrated. Complimented the cheese and charcuterie board very nicely.

  • Dark garnet color, opaque.

Upon initial opening, a hint of banana. After some air the banana goes away and there is a nose of bruised plums, a hint of prune, minty herb, anise, dusty earth.

On the palate sour cherry, plum, a hint of balsamic and dark chocolate.

Medium body, medium alcohol, light acidity. Creamy mouthfeel with silky tannins. First Musar and I’m pretty happy with this wine. Lovely complexity and depth and a nice medium length finish.

  • Above all, notable for its silky texture. Great mixture of exotic spices. I could go on and on about the various flavors and what not, but the wine is extremely well integrated and does not lend itself to such a dissection. A classic vin de contemplation. No idea how this will develop, but I am sure that if it will last for 10 years and your seller you would not be disappointed

  • 这个酒是真正的value。coravin前两次,都要醒6-7小时以上,第二次,时间差点儿,还要再装回小瓶,等到第二天,再醒23小时。气味上很mineral,酸锈。但是口中很柔软,暖香。

  • Very good. Beatiful dark red. Cherry, spring blossoms, violet, ripe apple, iron, (sandal)wood, leather, but also lifting citrus, mint, high pitched, slight VA. Tastes warm, cherry, ripe but not overripe, herbal, high acidity, slightly grainy tannin, medium long. Still a bit disjointed. Personally I’d say this is approachable now, but ideally to be forgotten in the cellar for several years. Slightly worried about the balance here. Drink the bottle in 6-8 years

  • Didn't take notes - paired with grilled rack of lamb on Mother's Day. Decanted for 1 hour. Preferred this to a Pertimali '11 Brunello. Nice savory notes (tobacco, earth, tea) with good fruit. 93-94 range. Will buy some more.

  • My first taste of 2011. It delivers. Taste-wise I find it quite similar to the powerful and spicy 2002 vintage, but it lacks the velvety finish of 1996. A great wine though.

  • Very fruit forward, like a California or a Southern Rhone. From a warm area and the alcohol is as well. Great for Winter. Glad I tasted a Musar with some age.
*2nd night getting nicer also a sweet acetone element coming through.
*3rd night acetone boiling out and evaporating (going to the big sky), tannins a bit rough of course third night in the presence of O2.

  • My first Musar experience. I followed the directions on the bottle to stand it up before serving (I did this for 48 hours), use an ah-so to pull the cork, and decant (I did for 2 hours.

Before decanting this was simple, with more acidity and less tannin than expected. Two hours later it opened up, expressing raspberry fruit and a hint of something interesting that I couldn't quite put my finger on (Musariness?). I saved a glass in a refrigerated bottle for the next day. It was good on day 2, but lost the fruit that I enjoyed on day 1 but did not pick up anything new.

Overall, trying this has me intreagued to try Musar from some other vintages but I'm not ready to get more 2011s. I would drink now with a decant.

  • Gave an hour in the decanter for New Years.
Smooth tannins and somewhat flabby. Flavors or dark cherry, Tobacco, leather and mint. Interesting flavors, but not as well defined and complex.
New country and location for me, so glad I tried this.

  • I do worry that Musar will get sucked in to the over extracted, rich global style that too many producers succumb to and 2011 does not dissuade me from this. It is so dark purple, a hit of rusticity but a bit too rich and smooth and certainly no volatility. Musar is a unique style and it was be a travesty to try and round all the edges. This may develop over the long term but a bit too cuddly at present for my liking.

  • This came off a bit too ripe for my liking, showing port like aromatics of plums and dark ripe berries. There is some earthy herbal character to the mid-palate, but overall thought this was out of balance and lacking much needed lift and freshness, or at least another dimension of complexity.

  • We drank this as the second bottle this evening with a restaurant dinner of Bedouin-inspired middle eastern fare; the first was a bottle of the 1997 (qv). Both were double-decanted, removing light+ sediment, about 2 hours before drinking.

There was quite some contrast between the vintages - whereas the 1997 has moved into a more subtle, complex phase, this 2011 was still very much "in your face" Musar - big spicy fruit, a touch of heat, a touch of funk (although not as much as in the older vintages when they were this young) and just a little bite on the finish. But not so much complexity yet. It paired excellently with the slightly spicier food that formed the second half of the meal.

So overall this is very decent wine to drink now if you can't wait, or want the more "powerful" Musar feel, but like most vintages I guess it still has another decade ahead of it at least.

  • Deep purple colour
N: intense nose of cherries, plums, violets, tobacco, leather and mint.
P: intense and rich. Grippy tannin, high acid and full body with funky flavours of dark chocolate, cherries, orange rind, and dark fruits.
This is a really delicious Musar that is just entering its drinking window. Big, rich, fresh and fruit forward, the complete opposite to the '96 I drank a few weeks ago, wow!

  • Black red color. Opaque and dense hue but clear. Some signs of age. Nose is Bordeaux-esq, but more floral. Dark fruits, ripe blackberry, cassis, violets, rose, with notes of spice. Singing out of the glass. Palate is medium to full bodied, with great balance. Texture is lovely, but a little rough, like a linen or summer cotton. Dark ripe fruits, but not sweet. High acidity with fine, but meaningful tannin. Well integrated. Slightly sour, but long finish. Medium alcohol (~13%). Really really good wine and drinking wonderfully right now.

  • The 2011 Musar is opaque deep ruby in color. I decanted this for about an hour and drank it over the following hour. The nose showcases aromas of blackberry, plum, black cherry, anise, cigar box, forest floor, slight barnyard, exotic spice, and faint smoke. Once in the mouth, this displays notes of redcurrant, juicy plum, dusty cherry, black raspberry, worn leather, tobacco, dried earth, crushed rock minerality, baking spice, and black pepper. The wine is medium- to full-bodied with medium (+) acidity, tight-knit and dusty medium tannins, and a medium (+) length finish.

Roughly equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, and Cinsault; 13.5% ABV

  • Drank over 2 nights.

Didn't note color. On nose, tobacco, plums, black currants and earthy undertones. On palate, brighter fruit than suggested by nose - cherry, strawberry, red currants and savory tobacco on finish. Medium body/ medium / tannins, medium acidity and long finish. Great balance and good cross between Bordeaux and Rioja (savory). 92-93+

    Would buy again.

  • Riper than other Musar I tried. (2001)

    Coravined Day 1
Nose: intense ripe fruit (plum?) very ripe, mint, orange peel. (Getting only very slight the earthy Tabacco aromas I liked from the 2001, 2011 still young. And I didn’t decant.)
Palate: tasty ripe fruit, Med- tannin, very long length.

When Paired with food with black pepper, it brings out a superb smoky tabacco very long length. WOW so good.

2001 my notes indicated the nose was like a Brunello.
2011 the nose smelled a lot like a CNdP.

Decanted for a few hours before tasting the wine.

Deep and slightly translucent black cherry color. Clean, vibrant and ripe nose with subtly sweet, fruit-forward aromas of black cherries, some blackcurrants, a little bit of dusty garrigue, light blueberry tones and a hint of juicy dark plums. No VA or funky notes of brett here. The wine is dry, dense and medium-to-moderately full-bodied on the palate with clean flavors of peppery spice, ripe dark forest fruits, some ripe cranberries, a little bit of blueberries, light leathery tones and a hint of sunny red fruit. The wine is enjoyably fresh and structured with its high acidity and firm medium-plus tannins. The alcohol lends a little bit of warmth to the palate. The finish is quite long, fresh and acid-driven with bright flavors of dark forest fruits, some wild strawberries, a little bit of peppery spice, light gravelly mineral tones, a hint of sour cherry bitterness and an earthy touch of garrigue.

A very nicely balanced, fresh and sophisticated vintage of Musar that is atypically "clean" for the house style - in the sense that the wine really shows no lifted notes of VA nor any rustic, funky aromatics of brett. Lovely, bright acidity here with a nice tannic backbone. Overall the wine feels a little bit straightforward and slightly lacking in complexity due to its young age and lack of funk. It might be more approachable to those who prefer their wines squeaky-clean, but for me the wine really could use some more cellaring to bring out some depth and complexity to the ripe fruit flavors. Perhaps slightly pricey at 39,94€.

  • An exceedingly ripe musar and not entirely suited to my personal preference. Still, it shows the classic musar underextraction and juice richness. You can see the new regimen coming into shape here as the wine is brett free. However the aldehyde character so intrinsic to musar is retained. Ripe apricots, tea, sherry- as you can see not the most complex musar but highly highly serviceable and very good value. even though admittedly the alcohol is on the upper end of the spectrum, it is balanced nicely by the sheer richness of the juice

  • This is, I believe, my 5th Musar vintage - 98,99, 01, 04 and now 11. Clearly this is way too young, but I had to try. I am coming to the conclusion that Musar verticals are nonsense. Every year has a completely different stylistic and can be compared to a completely different wine region. So is this now like a very good barolo with at least 5 years to go before it should be drunk. It is tight, very concentrated, powerful wine, with little of the usual Musar orange peel. Leather, earthy tones and high complexity. It will push 93-95 in 5-10 years. Now it should really be left alone.

Fyldig med god syre. Krydret frukt på smak. Mye, men fine og tydelige tanniner. Balanserer fint med syre, og kommer til å lagre fint lenge.
    Saftig, dyp, krydret utgang. Lang.

    93/100

  • Tasted next to the 2004 vintage. Darker in colour, less expressive with more dark fruit on the nose. Spices, smoky notes, green tobacco. On the palate ripe tannins, a little tight, good acidity and overall balance. Fine length. Needs time, but not unapproachable. 90-91+(+)

  • The wine is clear, medium red core with a very thin watery rim, developing

The nose is clean, medium intense aromas of red berries, ceder tree, dark plum, strawberries, developing

Palate is dry, medium+ ripe tannins, medium acidity, medium+ alcohol, body and flavour intensity with aromas of red berries, ceder tree, dark plum, leather, hint of oak, leather, long finish

Well balanced, long finish, medium+ intensity, lacks some complexity at this point. Very good quality with long potential, 89-90p

  • Very clean aromatics on the nose here, with none of the classic Musar funk. Polished fruit notes of cassis and candied cherry up front, with a little spice, leather and wood in the background. The overall impression is rather Bordelais. Palate is jammy and fruit-forward; deliciously cool and accessible, but showing an alarming lack of structure and grip (quite unlike the 2009 I tried a few weeks back). I can’t see this being a particularly long-lived Musar, but it gave a great deal of pleasure tonight.

  • "A taste of Libanon"-Tasting, Flight 4, Wine 2 (non-blind): The wine was medium to dark ruby in colour. The nose was all about potential and hidden promises! On the palate, the wine showed good red and dark fruit flavours, complemented by a touch of Brett and some residual CO2, with a touch of residual sugar, good acidity, fine, high-quality tannin and superb length. The medium-bodied wine was well-balanced, with good structure, and quite impressive despite of its youth. A very accessible vintage of Musar that showed well in the tatsing setting. A must-buy! Let us see how it develops. 92++ for now.

  • Dried red fruit, raisins, coriander seeds, cocktail cherries, paint bucket, leather and a touch of alcohol.

Round and generous on the palate with a good acidity, distinct but finely grained tannins, sweet fruit and a very long finish.

    Tasty!

  • drinking amazingly well for such a young Musar, Not as eccentric as some vintages, tons of dusty red fruit, fine tannins, very approachable, had at a restaurant £65 usual 200% + mark up, evolved in the glass. loved by all.

  • From a half bottle. Decanted for 1/2 hour. On the nose subtle sweetish oak/hardwood with some christmas spices. Felt a bit volatile. Medium bodied, smooth with firm tannins, delivering ripe sweetish red berries with subtle oak, a bit of sweet spice, good dusty finish. Nice texture. The palate was volatile and seemed to change a bit with airtime. Drinking rather nicely but is still painfully young. Will only improve in the cellar.

  • Gamey on the nose with blackberries and blueberries. Explosive opening with fine tannins. Dry and long finish.

Tasted blind, thought it was a Syrah from Northern Rhone.

Virkelig bra bitt i tanninene. Litt atypisk Ch.Musar, men absolutt en god vin. 90 poeng. For nå.

  • Fresh, medium body, which seems surprising for this bottle

  • Classic Musar, its mix of Cab, Carignan and Cinsault always gives an interesting hybrid between a Bordeaux and a Rhone, the fruit of the cab with the delicious background of the red fruit, slightly earthy, almost gamey Cinsault. Already drinking well, will age for many years and the leather and gamey notes will increase. Medium acidity, medium+ body, goof length and complexity.

  • Even after carrying the open, half drunk bottle around and three days in the fridge still youthful and somewhat restrained. So the previous taster here is right, way too young to drink now. But the potential is again incredible, the cherries and plums accompanied by some sweetness of oak and Christmas spices as well as a susceptible but very smooth tannin structure. At present very fruity indeed but indicating already the balsamic notes that I find so typical for lebanes wines. Promises a lot, let’s see in 5 more years at least.

  • Musar tasting at Roberson Wine.
Very tight, but with a viscous rich dark hedge-fruit core. Youthful tannins. Huge potential.
Don't even contemplate opening this until at least 10-12 years from vintage...and quite possibly even longer!! Bought a case.
