Very solid Côte-Rôtie! Perfect pop and pour with development in the glass. Somewhat ripe fruit-forward style but not overly so, with solid core of acidity and moderate well-integrated tannins. Lovely earthy nose, beautiful dark ruby color. Not as much spice as I expect from northern Rhône, but sufficient. Three superb bottles consumed with friends with steak dinner.

High alcohol and red fruit aromatics, seemingly lightly oaked too. In fact.. 36 month oak ageing, but the fruit and gaminess shallows its effect.
Wow! Super fresh and lively, acid M with a sweet long finish. The comes swarves of dark fruit and some dried flowers too, the mouthfeel is both deep as well as balanced.
d’Ampuis is between Rhône and ancient vineyards of the Côte-Rôtie. Produced from 7 of the most exceptional plots of the domaine, Château d’Ampuis is made from predominan Syrah with a little Viognier.
For the Rhône Valley, the vintage of 2009 was fantastic for both north and south. For the Northern Rhône, where Cote Rotie is.. a warm, dry spring kicked off a rapid growing season which saw both an early budburst and flowering.
Although, the weather remained warm, the nights were reassuringly cool preserving acidity in the grapes. Conditions were so good that controlling yields throughout the growing season was, arguably, the biggest challenge.
Thanks brother RN for sharing this special bottle, it may have been the youngest in our line-up but boy was it special... I think some of the lads figured our its a Rhone, but went down the path of CdP and its 13 plus varietals!! Pure Syrah with a drop of Viognier? What magic from the mighty E Guigal!

Amazing bottle - takes a bit of air at the beginning to take off notes of vanilla. Even in the begging could tell this was a relatively smooth bottle with great red fruits and a hint of animal fat
There is still a ton of power in this wine. Will continue to check in over the years. Had a glass the next time - vacuum sealed but left at room temp - and was still fantastic.
I would buy more - have over a case left - if it was in short supply

Un nez renversant ! Épices (mesquite), gras de bacon, fruits noirs, réglisse, notes florales, fumé, tabac, cendre, genévrier...magnifique ! Rond et fondu...souple et gracieux...complexe et étagé. Long et savoureux.

Opened with a very muted nose and never really got going even after a couple hours of air. Similarly, the palate lacked expression to the point of being strict and quite austere. This bottle was pulled from the same case as a spectacular one enjoyed about 7 months ago so can only put this down to bottle variation. We ended up finishing the bottle but were left wanting more than what was delivered.

Excellent rhone !

This was spectacular. Fragrant floral, kirsch, deli, charcoal and spice notes with the beginning of some secondary development. I loved the red fruit intensity and mouth-watering acidity. A fairly large-scaled effort which came across as light on its feet owing to the impeccable balance. I did not decant, choosing to follow it on its journey over 3 hours and saw the most improvement after about 30 minutes. Thoroughly enjoyable on its own but there would be lots of great food pairing options, from meat to pasta, aged cheeses, and even some spicier dishes. Much better than a bottle consumed a couple of years ago. Still a considerable runway ahead, IMO.

2009 Cote-Rotie Chateau D'Ampuis from Domaine Guigal ! Very deep dark color, complex in the nose (kirsch, spice and black raspberries). After decanting for two hours sweet ripe tannins took place in the mouth, fresh acidity and a taste of smoked meat mixed up in a full bodied surrounding . Great Cote - Rotie from a great Producer !

Opened for a friend who cancelled last minute. I consumed the bottle over six hours, just pouring into the glass I enjoyed it with charcuterie, which brought out the gaminess and meatiness of the wine over the course of the evening, the cherries, fresh raspberries and anise or black licorice emerged. Also cedar and tobacco. Complex evolving wine; massive; another 20 years of life easily.

Glass: Riedel Vinum Syrah Popped and poured, drunk over three days. Clear, deep ruby-garnet color. Medium intense, classic Syrah nose. On the palate surprisingly lean and precise, definitively no fat snail. Very well made classic Syrah, that drinks well right now, but will most probably gain some more depth with 3-5 more years. Good length. Very good wine, but probably not worth the price tag. 91-92

A rainy Saturday afternoon with friends (My place): Opened 3-4 hours before consumption, no decant. This wine managed to be both ethereal and powerful. Very complex, I am not sure I caught all the nuances. Probably not at peak yet, I will wait a few more years before enjoying the next bottle.

Medium garnet. This still showed quite young. Asian spice and cherry notes with some cedar and tobacco lurking in the background. The nose followed through to a similar flavour profile on a medium-bodied high-pitched frame. A 2-hour decant would likely have improved the experience.

Richly fruited, dark fruits, spice notes, plush oak, with a saturated, grainy texture. Finishes with fine tannic and acidic freshness. 13.5% abv so ripeness well managed. Classy modernism, a ‘baby La La.’

This was drinking very well tonight after just abit of air, with lots of dark, rustic, earthy blue and black fruit, subtle stewed fruit undertones, perhaps some hints of tobacco and a fairly long finish. The chalky tannins are still a little on the firmish side. All in all, quite nice.

Dark red colored. Dark berries, some licorice and tobacco in the nose. On the palate black cherries, ripe plum, smoked bacon and blackberries. Full bodied with a medium acidity. Firm and astringent tannins. Good complexity and depth. Long and very juicy finish. This still feels a little too young, wait 2-3 more years before opening a bottle. Will easily hold another decade. For such a high-flyer this one was rather underwhelming, but most likely still too young. Cherries, vanilla, tobacco, violet, in a sweetish balance with violet and almost perfumed notes. I will give it another three years to see where this is going.

Informal dinner, no notes taken. This wine shined with intense and very precise aromatics, despite the hot vintage, the level of ripeness is well kept in check. There is a strong vegetal component which is dominating and not fully in my prefered aroma spectrum. Nevertheless, this was a very good wine, with a soft structure, expression and intensity and a good freshness. Not decanted, no decant needed. 93+ points easily.

Dinner at the new TableAt7. Bottle off the wine list. Appearance some fine sediment, deep intensity, rby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of vanilla, toasted wood, smoke, blackberries, black cherrirs, dark floral spices, fresh blood, red meat, undertone of grilled bacon. Developed. On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ alcohol (13.5%), fine high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours sweet vanilla, toasted oak, dark licorice, sweet spices, dark red cherries, black cherries, blackberries. Smoky bacon meat in the background. With more air, the vanilla-coated extracted blackberries dominate. Long finish. Very good quality. Despite my traditional style leanings nowadays, I have still thoroughly enjoyed Guigal's wines. Modern and enjoyable. Really does feel like a mini Lalala. The oak is very much part of the whole experience, luxuriate in it rather than keeping it hoping for it to integrate. Drinking in a great spot already.

2009 and 2010 Côte-Rôtie tasting (Magnum Society, Wellington, New Zealand): Primary, deep, dark colour. A beautiful, lush and full, perfumed bouquet showing dark fruits, all spice, pipe tobacco, violets and other dark florals and a hint of black pepper. An opulent, full entry, initially sweet-seeming. A lovely wine, balanced, powerful and restrained. Multi-layered, complex and very long. Much more open and accessible than the 2010. My WoTN, judged on its performance on the night. Also, group WoTN. Some tasters - however - found others of the wines - particularly the 2010 Jamet and Guigal - more interesting, which I could understand. Perhaps in a few years, I'll agree. Hedonistic.

Wow. Right out of the bottle, it was surprisingly drinkable. Dark purple with a rich nose dominated by wood and dark fruits. Dusty tannins (as expected) with a lingering finish. After an hour of decanting the wine reveals notes of cedar, blueberries and plums, cinnamon and cloves with the merest hint of vanilla. The spice, tannins, fruit and acid meld elegantly into a rich mouthfeel with a long finish.

During a Loire/Rhone blind tasting dinner with pirates. I had this a few years ago and the bottle left me confused. Today I had it blind again and I know where the confusion comes from. This wine drinks like a heavy, ripe, concentrated, oaky Southern Rhone or Priorat bruiser. Looks like they overdid it in this vintage, a pity.

Richly textured, full-bodied, fresh, lively and loaded with sweet, ripe, stony, peppery fruits, this is starting to drink well, however, a few more years in the cellar will allow the wine to gain even more silk in its textures along with aromatic nuances.

I love Guigal and his somewhat hedonistic style, but still have not fallen for the 2009. As so many wines from Europe, 2009 suffers somewhat from the hot vintage and a bit too much of everything. Same in this case, albeit perhaps being less over the top than many other 2009’s I’ve had. Time might sort the vintage out, but overall, acidity vs. fruit seems to be a problem for many wines, 10 years down the line, along with to much alcohol due to too high sugerlevels in the grapes when picked and vinified. Anyway, back to this particular bottle: Nose with loads of quite heavy fruit and lilacs/red deeply perfumed flowers (like the perfume of an over perfumed old lady trying to hide her perhaps not very pleasurable body odor?), smoke and bacon, meat and tons of oak and alcohol/volatile. Very new world in profile, too much of everything. Palate shows a dense and hedonistic, clumsy wine. Alcohol, sugar, plums, black sweet and almost jammy fruit with loads of oak and vanilla present. Lacking acidity and transparency for any balance. My guess are that this wine will never settle and integrate all oak, sugar, alcohol and fruit, before falling apart due to not enough acidity present for the process to finalize. Too much for my liking, as was the Guigal La Landonne I had a few years back from this very same vintage. Still, well made as Guigal always are, but too much of everything to make me cum. I do expect more when I open my Guigal medium/upper shelve bottlings, so disappointed, but sure it’s mainly a work of the vintage reflected. (89 – 90?)
Black red; intense clean licorice, subtle dark fruit; very tasty, good grip, mildly biting tannins, power, very long aftertaste; really good with a still young expression, still lots to go but already now a real pleasure
First bottle of 3. Waited long enough. Opened 2 hours before drinking and started with the cheese course. At first, a lot of pepper and not overpowering. The last 2 glasses, after the cheese, got progressively more intense and powerful, with a hint of blood. Great wine.

Alinea Reserve Wine Pairing February 2018 (Alinea Chicago): Paired with the same dish as the 2009 Torbreck The Factor Shiraz. Couldn't have been more different then the Torbreck - this wine was restrained and sophisticated and paired much better with the food. I hesitate to call any of the flavors dominant because they all were so harmonious. We tasted lots of raspberry and currant with secondary flavors of mild pepper, olive and minerality/graphite.

A large amount of serious upside potential if one can sit on this for at least ten more years. Acidity and tannins that will make this a 40 year wine easy. A deep ruby colour, sort of plummy looking. Immediate perfume of pepper and rich berries, that syrah funk. On the palate, so much more elegant than I thought it would be.

Barely old world. Feels very "modern" for a Cote-Rotie, but, then again, this is Big Guigal. Coffee and dense black>red fruit predominate. Medium body and this is light on its feet and certainly not plodding, but I miss the floral notes, the meat and olive, that I typically get from good CR. This is a good wine but very one-dimensional right now. 90 now and doubtful much higher. Appallingly bad QPR considering how much good Syrah is out there

Deep, opaque colour. Fine nose as it opened and warmed. Very rich, fine fruit with spices and great complexity from the high quality fruit and extended ageing in oak. Very long but it continued to open seductively in the glass, becoming even richer. A (generous) tasting sample was simply not enough! Expensive, of course and, in the real world, the Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde from the same vintage is perhaps better value but this is a great wine. This bottle left me a little confused. For a Rhone Nord the tannis were almost too soft, also very little of the typical peppery note either. Instead a very ripe, dark fruit, leather and a nutty/toasty note. Different to the many young Syrahs I had from this region and different to many Guigal La, La's I know. Very new world modern oaky - should this be like that? On the palate there is good acidity and enough freshness, no oxidative tones, thank god. May be I am too conservative with my note, it will certainly be interesting to follow up on this wine in 5-10 years time. 91+

Glass: Riedel Vinum Syrah
Popped and poured, drunk over three days. 91-92

Medium garnet. This still showed quite young. Asian spice and cherry notes with some cedar and tobacco lurking in the background. The nose followed through to a similar flavour profile on a medium-bodied high-pitched frame. A 2-hour decant would likely have improved the experience.

Hedonistic.

Walnuts, Medium Toast Oak
Unlike other people's notes, the scent of oak did not crush the wine.
in Palate
Full body, Dry
dense mineral power from granite terroir
fresh and elegant acidity
still solid tannin
Not too heavy wine
I kept this wine at a little high of 18 degrees, so maybe it was good to drink now.

Anyway, back to this particular bottle:
Nose with loads of quite heavy fruit and lilacs/red deeply perfumed flowers (like the perfume of an over perfumed old lady trying to hide her perhaps not very pleasurable body odor?), smoke and bacon, meat and tons of oak and alcohol/volatile.

Guigal St. Joseph & C. D'aumpuis Tasting (Knightsbridge Wine Shop (Northbrook, IL)): Gorgeous. Wine of the day for me. Funky, herbal, dried fruit, mineral city again. Super rustic raspberries.
Lots of violets, really pretty feminine elements. Gorgeous palate. Mouth coating and richer overall.
A little more modern style but loved this. Great grip on the finish. Very young.

Northern Rhone: Berry pie and spices, just like a good Syrah was meant to be.

Syrah vs. Shiraz (Cellier Wine Shop, Athens, Greece): Dark purple. Still a baby, with esspresso coffee, leather, charcoal, fresh-sliced salami, smoke and meat. Focused and somewhat restrained. Full-bodied and dense with firm tannins, powerful fruit and balancing acidity. Very long. Great potential but needs time to unwind.

Guigal Château d'Ampuis - complete vertical tasting of 1995-2009 (Stockholm): Medium red, rather compact colour with a hint of purple. Nose with blackberries, blueberries, flowery notes with violets and hyacinths, some cloves and black pepper, some animal notes; elegant. Palate with ripe blackberries, ripe cherries, some strawberries, massive concentration of fruit, well embedded medium+ tannins. Quite a lot of concentration and power, young but drinkable now, 93+ p.
More powerful and flowery nose than the 2009 Brune et Blonde 2009, and shows the same "punch" on the palate as the 2007 La Mouline. An exceptionally good Chateau d'Ampuis!

Another K&L Rhone Tasting (San Francisco): Medium ruby. Forthcoming, resiny nose. Medium weight, soft and supple. Obvious oak, which seizes the wine somewhere in mid-palate and carries through to the finish. Elegant but too manipulated.
