2018 Pierre Girardin Bourgogne Blanc Eclat de Calcaire

Chardonnay more

5/26/2024 - Lehto wrote: 91 points

PVG is one of the few that has nailed the warm 2018 vintage.

Right after opening, the first 15-30 minutes, there was nothing but gunpowder and struck matchstick on the nose - extremely heavy reduction.
Luckily, it did blow off and gave way to toasted oak, roasted popcorn kernel, struck flint but also a lovely yet subtle hint of green apple, pear, white peach, white flowers and lemon curd.

Palate was also subtle at first with an extremely intense acidity from green apple, green pear, unripe white peach, lemon and lime but there's still the reductive and creamy backbone to balance it. The warm vintage does show a bit with grapefruit and some citrus pith but it's kept in check although edging. Wet stone and crushed chalk adds a beautiful minerality!

2013 Diot-Legras Champagne Grand Cru Subtil

Chardonnay more

5/24/2024 - Lehto wrote: 94 points

The new edition of Subtil is finally here!

100% Grand Cru Chardonnay and this "Tirage 2013" was bottled and put in the cellar in 2013. It is made with a "Soléra", or "perpetual reserve", and is made in small 114-litre oak barrels. This edition is Brut Nature!!!

Such a bright and beautiful golden color, and the aromas in the nose are so powerful right from the beginning. Bruised apple, baked apple pie, ripe citrus fruits, candied lemon, some slight touch of tropical fruits and a lovely blend of oak, vanilla and brioche together with this intense freshness!

The palate is just incredibly balanced and complex with a depth and power from the perpetual reserve, oak and long aging while also having so much freshness and acidity from the Chardonnay...
Green apple, green pear, citrus fruits and white peach lay the fresh and intense base - while oak, windfalls, toasted brioche, candied lemon, mushroom, vanilla and pineapple really bind it all together.
No dosage to interfere with the perfect balance that it delivers on its own!

2016 Domaine Ballorin Bourgogne Blanc

Chardonnay more

5/26/2024 - Lehto wrote: flawed

This is quite a special bottle from Gilles Ballorin. Due to frost, over 80% of the crop was lost in 2016, and Gilles was left with barely a barrel or less of any given cuvée. So he decided to offer the bottles in only 300 very special wooden cases with special labels.

This was the only white in the case.

Unfortunately, this was completely brown and heavily oxidized. Such a shame.

2022 Pierre Mang Le Parc Rouge

One glass recorked in the bottle and left for me to try on Day 2.

Super nice and open at this stage even though it's the latest vintage.

Primarily focused on light and lush red berries; redcurrant, sour cherry, unripe raspberry and cranberry with a lovely fruit acidity, but there's also a green and herbaceous touch which is not removing focus from the light and crushable fruits. Nice balance and soft tannins!

A lovely red in a more "new school"-style that we're seeing quite a lot lately. A nice wine at the price point, but I think I'd personally then rather seek out the reds from Petit-Roy, which I find in the same category but costs slightly less/around the same but with more variety as well.

2020 Si Tu Sais Bourgogne Blanc Les Perrières

Chardonnay more

5/20/2024 - Lehto wrote: 88 points

The jungle drums for Si Tu Sais have begun, so it was time for me to open this regular Bourgogne Blanc from 2020.

I've had some very interesting chats with other wine lovers on Instagram about this wine, so it was time to put it to the test...

And for me, personally, it just doesn't live up to the hype.

It's by no means a bad wine, but it's just very classical in its expression, and for me it's just rather uninspiring and "regular".

Quite tight on the nose, but there's a big hit of toasted oak, tropical fruits, citrus fruits, custard and some kind of spice.

On the palate it feels rather closed and restrained, but it opens up more over time. There's quite a warm and exotic feeling to the wine, where again the tropical fruits, lemon custard, toasted oak and oak spice were the main factors with some citrus fruit acidity to back it up. Some alcohol heat/spice/pepper bitterness and burn on the finish. For me it's just lacking some energy and drive to really stand out.

When paying about €50 (which is not the hype-pricing) for a BB like this, I just really expect more - this is the same price that I'm getting Vincent Dancer BB and JCB Saint-Aubin 1er for... Maybe the newer vintages have seen a large improvement?

2015 Roses de Jeanne / Cédric Bouchard Champagne Blanc de Noirs Côte de Val Vilaine

Pinot Noir more

5/17/2024 - Lehto wrote: 94 points

Of course 100% Pinot Noir from the 2015 harvest, disgorged April 2017 and bought recently on auction for a celebration. My first time with a champagne from RDJ!

It poured quite a light golden color for something with 7 years of bottle age, and it was full of lively small bubbles.

Nose was textbook Pinot Noir - red apple, bruised apple, ripe pear, candied lemon and a touch of apricot. So much going on with a hint of orange citrus fruits, flowers and some freshly-baked biscuits as well.

The palate felt extremely fresh and I would never have guessed that this had 7 years of bottle age, but there was also an intense depth and complexity to the champagne, that I really think is incredible without any use of oak aging at all!
Red apple, golden and ripe stone fruits, lemon, candied lemon, clementine, apricot, peach and a very slight touch of red berries while there's also an element of churned butter and toasted bun/biscuit. Such a wonderful balance and elegance while having the power and depth of the Pinot Noir.

At the price of ~€180 on auction, I feel like there's just so many high-end and interesting champagnes, but if you're able to source these at €100 or below, I really think they're worth it to buy and hide away for 5-10 years...

From magnum.

Better than I remember it - this must have a really great vintage as the base, because the acidity and energy in this was really lovely, and not as I remember it from years ago!

Still as I also remember it from years ago; quite heavy on the dosage that doesn't feel integrated enough, but this time the pure citrus fruit, sharp acidity and lovely energy really help lifting this up - at the price of €46 for magnum, this is a no-brainer...

2015 Domaine Jean-Claude Bachelet et Fils Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Champlots Blanc

5/11/2024 - Lehto wrote: 94 points

I've had two bottles of 2017 from JC Bachelet recently, and I felt both was lacking acidity, even in such an amazing vintage as 2017, so I didn't know what to expect from this 2015 that I hear mixed things about.

I don't know if JC Bachelet has just done it right or if the vintage is better than some people think now after almost 9 years, but this was just exactly what I love about Bourgogne.

Toasted oak, flint, popcorn kernels and a beautiful symphony of citrus fruits, stone fruits and white flowers on the nose - it literally filled the room right from opening.

Palate didn't show any kind of heavy reduction even though the nose might have indicated it, and the oak was just perfectly integrated at this stage but still present. No tightness or closed - just singing!
Lemon, yuzu, kumquat and green apple laid the base with a real sexy acidity with a chalky and stony minerality. A really nice layer of oak, churned cold butter and toasted seeds rounded it out nicely. On the finish there was a touch of grapefruit and some lime pith adding a slight bitterness to the wine but fortunately not any kind of heat as it also often comes with.

I was contemplating a 93, but because of the sheer value from the recent auction I got this bottle from, I had to go with a 94.

1998 Moccagatta Barbaresco Bric Balin

Nebbiolo more

5/9/2024 - Lehto wrote: 94 points

Now this is what perfectly aged Barbaresco is all about.

Bottle was in perfect condition although the cork was quite dry and slightly crumbly, but it only broke in two pieces, so it was easy to remove.
Decanted into a tall and more narrow decanter as there was quite a bit of sediment.

The initial pour greeted us with a beautiful brick red color with a slight browning at the edges.

Nose was quite earthy and dried dominated by dried fruits, dried flowers, black tea, mushroom, black summer truffle, charred wood and pepper, but there was still a touch of youthful red and dark fruit there as well.

Palate was in a sense quite different, as the youthful fruits of dark cherry, fig, plum, strawberry and raspberry was at the front, but also with so much forest floor, mushroom, black summer truffle, burnt caramel, tobacco, soy sauce, dried fruits and flowers - while the tannins still had a slight bite with the most beautiful and complementing acidity.

The wine got better and better over the 4-5 hours and I feel like this bottle was in a perfect window right now for my person taste.
What an amazing experience!

100% Chardonnay from the 2021 harvest, fermented and vinified in 300 liter oak barrels. Disgorged 16 November 2023 with 4 g/l dosage and just 2,120 bottles made.

Really impressive concentration, structure and depth in this champagne - the barrel is just used so well and perfectly integrated.

On the nose it's quite tight and feels extremely young, but there's some lovely notes of lime, lime zest, white peach, brioche, oak, cold butter and chalk.

The palate is where the concentration and depth really shines with lemon, lime, green apple, grapefruit, oak, toasted brioche, churned butter, chalky minerals and some unripe tropical fruits.
Towards the finish the acidity gets a bit too overwhelming for me with a very green and unripe feel and pure lime juice. It really deserves more time for the dosage and acidity to integrate better, but with 2-3 years of bottle ages I think this will start to show perfectly.

Just as the other reds I've had from Seiichi; super light, elegant, acidic and fruit-forward.

This reminds me more of the 2020 Iv'e had compared to 2016 and 2018, as it's a bit more dark and brooding than the older ones. Less dark and softer tannins than the 2020 but still more power and substance than the 16 and 18.

Dark cherry, blackberry, forest strawberry, ripe raspberry, unripe blackcurrant and redcurrant. There’s hints of forest floor, oak, herbs and black pepper as well as some hint of spices. Beautiful lightness, minerality and acidity! I love the style for simply being able to open a bottle and enjoy it.

Age: About 70-year-old vines (wow!)
Vinification: Max 1,5 kilo of grapes per vine. The whole vinification happens in cement tanks, where the wine also goes through malolactic fermentation, before it is bottled.

The most complex and interesting Dolcetto, that I have ever tasted!

A lovely core of both ripe and unripe red and dark berries, that adds a wonderful acidity and balance. To this comes an amazing depth and complexity from forest floor, licorice, incense and soft tannins, that does have a little grip to them.

The name "Grasmeri" comes from the small specific vineyard, where these old vines grow. It's a well-known vineyard in the Barbaresco-area by the locals, and it's the family's best-positioned vineyard!

2022 Rosanna Sandri Langhe Arneis Stella Dorata

Langhe DOC more

4/10/2024 - Lehto Likes this wine: 89 points

Area: San Rocco Seno d’Elvio (Barbaresco)
Age: Minimum 15-year-old vines
Vinification: The most important thing with Arneis is being able to keep the acidity balanced with the sugar content. The grapes are therefore harvested in small baskets, that are then kept for one at 0-2 degrees Celcius, before they are pressed. The rest of the vinification also happens at low temperatures to be able to keep and preserve all of the aromas.

Arneis might be a bit unknown to many, and I think that it can best be described as a mix of Chardonnay and Grüner Veltliner. A lovely acidity, citrus fruits and minerality from the Chardonnay, mixed with the stricture, something more green and a light bitterness from the Grüner.

A light and approachable Nebbiolo with a lovely fruitiness and a hint of roses - although it has developed depth, structure and a little tannin-bite from the time in Botti. It can definitely benefit with a little time in a decanter beforehand, or be aged for several years.

Drinks great now with a few hours in the decanter, but it also has a huge development and storage potential!

4/28/2024 - Lehto Likes this wine: 90 points

Right off the bat, this wine was extremely weird to me. Very strong green touch on the nose and it felt muted in some weird way. The palate was nothing but green bitterness and alcohol heat.

After two hours this started changing - and fast. Along came a quite reductive style like I've grown to love from PYCM, his wife and PVG! Toasted oak, butter, browned butter, roasted popcorn kernels and seeds as well as struck flint.
There's a lovely acidic backbone to support it with lemon/lime, citrus zest, green apple and freshly churned butter. It has a "yellowness" to it while not feeling too "nature" as well as nice florals.

There's still some feeling of the high alcohol keeping a little bitterness and burning sensation, that I'm not too fond off. It blew off more on day 2 but was still there.

I'd say this wine needs at least another 2-4 years in the cellar.

100% Pinot Noir, no dosage and disgorged in January 2021.

The color on this one has a real peach/salmon tint to it! Really beautiful.

On the nose, the very first thing is something usually not found in Champagne for me; peach and apricot! It's joined by orange, lemon, kind of a red berry touch, red apple and a lovely depth with crackers, butter and some oxidative/earthy touch.

Palate was first really rich and creamy from the peach, apricot, red apple, biscuit/butter and the oxidative style, but there's also so much freshness and acidity from fresh orange, citrus zest, unripe stone fruits and a really sexy chalky minerality. This is really balanced so stunningly and with the ~3 years of bottle age, it's drinking absolutely perfect in my opinion.

Ripe tropical fruits, ripe peach, apricot, honey and there's also a bit of citrus fruits to give some balance and acidity, but I would have loved some more acidity to balance it even further. A nice slate minerality and a hint of petroleum. At €12 this is still a mighty fine wine!

Right off the bat, the nose had a touch of something funky, but it blew off with time. Overall quite a natural and wild fermented feel to it. Citrus fruits all over it, some fermented/oxidized green apple, unripe green stone fruits, green banana, crushed stone, oyster brine and this slight touch of green asparagus and tarragon.

Palate blew me away with how concentrated and weighty it was, but the acidity was blazing! Lemon juice, lime juice, citrus zest and pith, green apple, green grapes, green banana and some unripe element as well, but there's this creamy mouthfeel as well. Insane minerality with crushed and wet rocks and a lovely touch of sea breeze/oyster brine.

Absolute insane value ~€26 I need more!!!

Made with a blend of the 2014, 2016 and 2017 vintages with a mix of Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir. Bottled in July 2018 with 5,734 bottles made and of course Brut Nature.

Extremely golden in the glass - you can already see the more natural and oxidized style here.

Nose really showed this natural and oxidized style. Quite mature on the nose with bruised golden apple, apple cider, candied lemon, candied pineapple, guava, oak and brioche. Getting aged vintage and a slight Selosse vibe.

Even though the nose was mature and oxidized, the palate started off with a big hit of freshness - Red and green apple, red forest berries, ripe citrus fruits, citrus zest and some peach.
Then comes the creamy mouthfeel, depth and beautiful balance of, once again, more natural and oxidized notes. Cold churned butter, brioche, mature/bruised orchard fruits and grapefruit.
Such a laser-sharp acidity and so energetic with the zero dosage in perfect balance. Chalky, stoney and clean. Wonderful!

Gamay more

4/5/2024 - Lehto Likes this wine: 89 points

My first time with a wine from Henri Chauvet - getting a lot of traction lately!

This had the feel of a dark Beaujolais Cru to me, and I do feel this needs several more years in the cellar to ease up a little.

Black cherry, blackberry, chokeberry and dark plum really gives a nice touch of fruit, but they're dark and quite broody.
Really earthy, mushroom, animalistic, hung meat, iron, herbal and some smoke and leather. The tannins are actually not extreme although grainy, but it's the dark and broody feel that dominates and suggests this needs more time to loosen up. Acidity and minerality are both beautiful.

This is a lovely wine that I expect to turn even better, but as the price is around €30-40 it's also competing with a lot of high-end Beaujolais, and I'm not sure I'd choose this then...

3/22/2024 - Lehto Likes this wine: 89 points

As the 2022's are soon arriving from Skyaasen, I had the perfect excuse to open the most expensive of the bottles from the 2020 allocation.

It poured a quite deep golden color for such a young wine indicating some oxidation during the winemaking and/or its 2 years in bottle.

Nose is showing a bit of natural and oxidative style. Apple juice, floral, white roses, matureness, tropical fruits and butter but there's also a freshness hiding underneath it.

Palate had the same natural, ripe and oxidative style to it. Ripe tropical fruits, apple juice, bruised apple, florals, pickled lemon, butterscotch/fudge, hay but also a touch of more fresh stone fruits and citrus fruits. There's a fine acidity, although a bit to the lower side, as well as a lovely minerality.

I think I just really expected more for a wine at ~€86, especially since the only other white I've had from Skyaasen was the Pernand 2020, and that was so fresh, clean and elegant at ~€56.
In 2021 he released no whites, so I'm excited for the 2022's where there's Aligoté, Macon, Bourgogne Blanc Côte d'Or and a Pernand.

I've only had one red from PVG before, Pommard 2017, and that one was quite rough and harsh, so I was very interested in how this Bourgogne Rouge would be.

It's quite fruity and ripe and I feel like it's borderline being jammy, also because of the quite soft tannins but there's enough acidity to back it up and balance it to keep it interesting.
Ripe cherry, strawberry, bramble, crème de cassis with some hints of earthiness and licorice.

It's by no means a bad wine, but I'm not sure I would have placed it as a Bourgogne Rouge and given its market prices, I'd rather keep spending my money on PVG's white wines that are absolutely amazing...
