Cellared since release, perfect cork and fill. Dark ruby core, a little lightening at the rim, no bricking. Wonderful forward nose of dark cherries, cassis, mint/eucalyptus and leafy green notes, a bit of vanillin oak. Medium to medium-full body, excellent balancing acidity and tannins. Ripe fruit flavors follow the nose, nice bit of leafy green and well-integrated bacground oak adding some complexity. Medium to long finish. Plenty of fruit and balanced structure to continue drinking well for another 5-10 years. Glad I waited on this one, it’s drinking beautifully and showing a nice mix of classic old school California cab well-married to newer ripe fruit and oak barrel aging. Outstanding.

My first look at this. Opens with a nice nose of cherry, red berries, floral and herbal notes. Medium body, ripe fruit, nice balance, very clean… I miss the old Beaucastel funk. But this is one of the few Châteauneufs that haven’t gone over-the-top ripe. Medium finish. Too young for any aged complexity yet but drinking well as it is. Gets richer and deeper over the course of 2 hours. Excellent.

I approached my first bottle of this with some trepidation after a few other 2005 St. Emilions disappointed due to heavy overextraction and overripe fruit.

Immediately on opening the nose and palate hit me with raisiny sweetness, glossy ripe fruit, good acidity and tannins. I leave it alone in the glass for a couple of hours and the nose is much improved. Shy, backward, but at least not offputting. Very modern on the palate. I really don’t want this to be another boring overdone right bank 05, so I give it a continuance and stick it in the fridge for the next day.

Not expecting much today, the wine has really come around. Nose has dark fruits, cassis, cigar wrapper, a hint of moist earth. Medium-full body, with plenty of acid and tannin to balance the abundant fruit. No overripe or raisiny notes remain, no alcoholic heat. No complexity at this stage. That and the overnight improvement tell me this has potential to blossom. Excellent now with upside potential.

Purchased 2019 from Benchmark. Dark red core, lighter rim. Beautiful complex nose with moist, dark earth, dark cherry, hints of mint and fresh green notes. Medium body, excellent balance, fruit and earthy notes in perfect harmony. Moderate aged complexity with plenty of acid and fruit to develop even more in the coming years. Drinking beautifully and should continue to do so for many years to come. Excellent.
