I had a bottle a month ago that came across a bit lean (though wonderfully fragrant, similar to brooklynguy's impressions). Another one showed much better, conveying the same floral-peppery-olivey perfume but with more depth to the palate. It's still a light bodied wine, but doesn't finish as thin/dilute as my first bottle was.

A bottle of Gonon that completely justifies and confirms the hype. Opened at 4:30 and poured off a taste, served at about 7:30. This wine is gorgeous aromatically, showing pungency and intensity of floral, dark fruit, and meaty components, with a savory finish to the nose, if that makes sense. Balanced and layered on the palate too, just a beautiful wine - complex, energetic, and there's no way it could be mistaken for any other place. Great wine. Hard to see what additional cellaring would bring, although it's certainly not on any kind of downward trajectory. It's just kind of perfect now, with some air.

7/12/2023 5:18:00 PM - hey Ben - I opened the bottle at 4:30 to smell it and see if I thought it needed a decant i order to be ready to drink later that evening. My take on the wine was that it wouldn't need decanting in order to be ready a few hours later, and in fact that it could be past it's prime window. That's why I opened so early - to see what I wanted to do with the wine. Had the taste I poured off smelled and tasted such that I thought decanting was in order, would have done that. It was a subjective thing...

From an Inocente bottled in March 2019. I purchased a case, this is the 8th bottle consumed.

On a tip from Brooklynguy's magnificent defunct blog, I decided to go long on this terrific fino and note how this wine evolves. And evolve it does! It is rounder, smoother, more aromatic, and more integrated with three years bottle age. Is it better than when freshly bottled? My partner thinks so. Me?-not so sure. But I love it both ways, fresh and aged. I think fresh might be better with salty snacks and fresh seafood. Aged might be better with rounder flavors - this accompanied a Spanish tortilla. Delicious!

Inocente, to me, is the greatest qpr wine in the world. It's ageability attests to that.

New label on the bottle! Tasted against Hidalgo's Pastrana Manzanilla Pasada (see separate note).
On the back label L213152 which confuses given that it is the new label but seems to have been bottled earlier than my last, old label, bottle (L211132)? Perhaps I am horribly wrong.
Colour: light gold, v light bronze tinge, bright, clear.
Nose: full, v fresh, light fruit notes, some yeast but quite delicate, caramelised apples, fresh almonds;
Taste: light body, rounded, soft, ripe, good fruit of ripe apple and quince developing into a medium q light finish. V dry but rounded and soft.
Overall, very enjoyable in an elegant, lighter style that has fruit over salinity.

6/2/2022 6:04:00 AM - As I understand it, the label works like this: the first three letters are the e day of the year the wine was bottles. The next two are the year. The last is the single digit corresponding to the bottling line (pretty much always a 2). So one of yours was bottled in late June early July of 2013, the other at the same time of year in 2015.

  • Comment posted by brooklynguy:

6/6/2022 9:36:00 AM - You're right - I wrote it incorrectly. The FIRST two digits are the year (so both of your bottles were bottled in 2021). The next three digits are the day of the year, the final digit is always a 2 as far as I've seen, and is the bottling line. So you have one bottle from October 2021, and another from April 2021.

6/6/2022 10:42:00 AM - Digits 3,4, and 5 are the day of the year. It’s not the American system. 315 is the 315th day of the year - some day in October. Hope this clears it up for you - gotta go

Interesting nose, truly unlike anything I've had before - super floral, almost candied flowers - girlfriend says it smells like those violette pastilles that come in a can. It's attractive and fresh and again, interesting, if not terribly complex - kind of one-note. It's balanced and tasty and lithe on the palate, and this is perfectly good wine. But there is nothing whatsoever that speaks of Provence here - that aspect of the wine is completely absent. I love the rose, this is not something I would buy again.

That’s great. I might’ve wished it were just a bit less acid—it’s pretty intense, but this is pretty fabulous. I love how Encruzado wants to be tropical and pineapple-y, and how it’s kept in check by the mineral and spritzy, spiky mouthfeel that I’ve always associated with the granite it grows in. Most Encruzado I’ve tried that was done exclusively in barrel is blowsy—save for a couple exceptions. This is fermented in stainless & cement, and later 90% ages on its lees in the same vats, and 10% ages in French oak, presumably for body, complexity, and richness. Luis Seabra blended this with Bical (a curious, challenging grape on its own) and it is a screaming dry, racy wine. Honestly, as always in Portugal, there are probably other varieties kicking around in here in trace amounts. I had this with grilled pork, and I think it would be a great pairing were it not for the occasional unrequested sriracha incursion. I’d love this with a buttery halibut with some capers. Give it a buttery landing pad with some green herbal accents.

Fantastic! Immediately upon opening at 4PM we could tell that the wine would smell great. Decanted 15 minutes before serving and it needed more time to unfold in the glass. it was well composed and tasted great immediately, but was a bit closed on the nose, but 45 minutes in it blossomed to show some exotic fruit and flowers, and a with a lovely broadness and intensity. A pleasing almost-bitterness on the finish. Focused and pungent on the palate, just a very grand old wine.

To be honest: I always enjoy Falkenstein wines but I never understood why they are generating this mad fervor among riesling lovers. I mean, they're good, but relative to other wines from the region, why these wines? Well, I drank the other bottles I had of this too early, This one, now at only 4 years old, was absolutely fantastic - a special wine. I think I get it now. Wispy and feathery in its elegance, both aromatically and on the palate. And this wasn't the case earlier, it's gained in elegance and harmony, which makes sense, but I didn't anticipate how much the wine would gain with just a few years. So delicate and also so pungent in its expression of stone fruit and acid and mineral. There is sweetness here but it is entirely balanced and it comes off as more of a textural element, if that makes any sense. Wow, I wish I'd waited on my other bottles.

Absolutely top class Savigny les Beaune, as good as I’ve ever had from the north side of the river and qualitatively equal to any Dominode I’ve had too. Darker and richer in style than those though, which makes sense given the clay soils. Opened and poured out a small taste two hours before drinking. Immediately gorgeous on the nose with florals, plums blackberries and also some bright red fruits too. Over a few hours a pungent earthy minerality emerges and sings just as beautifully as the fruit and the flowers. The palate is completely delicious and balanced with vivid acidity and good structure. Not as complex or detailed in the palate as on the nose, but my bet is that comes over the next 5-7 as this continues to unfold. It’s ready to drink now, but feels like it’s at the early part of its best stretch of life.

I've spilled enough digital ink in praise of the '05 vintage that I need to be honest about it when one disappoints. Such was the case here.

There's no disputing provenance (although I can't vouch for oceanic shipping). I bought it about 10 years ago soon after release, I'm the only owner, and have stored it between 55-60 degrees the entire time.

The wine had a slight muddy streak, although I was in a darkish BYOB and couldn't see it that well. It was entirely secondary from the pour, with an unwelcome metallic note that seemed to go away after about 30 minutes. The flavor profile was earth, mushroom, hoisin sauce, and faded plummy fruit, in roughly that order. It was too much umami and not enough come to papa. It almost tasted like a packet of cheap plum sauce destined for moo shu pork.

I could not detect any typical fault, but would not expect a wine like this to run out of gas so soon. It could be admired for the secondary notes but was otherwise somewhat lifeless and blah. I have one left I think (?) and can only hope this was one of those inexplicable "bad bottles."

To whom it may concern: It is my habit to not consult previous notes, others or mine until I finish writing and hit "save and done." After posting I saw a note I wrote two years ago and it was an entirely different and very positive story. Can only conclude bad bottle here as a result. Your mileage may vary.

Decanted an hour before drinking. This wine had about a half hour where it was just excellent - rich, pungent, and very detailed aromas that show tobacco, wet soil, stone, and some surprisingly fresh dark fruit. Beautiful nose that translated perfectly to the palate, where the wine was equally expressive and detailed, very well balanced, and entirely satisfying in that way that mature Bordeaux can be. But the hour that preceded this was no where as good - the wine showed murky and without a clear expression. It was as though a veil were lifted and we had this gorgeous wine for a half hour.

There are 15 minutes of utter glory - brightness and energy and beauty of fruit and complexity in bloody animale foresty minerality. The wine is gorgeous. Delicious approachable meaty syrah, with aromas and flavors that are animale and wild, and also floral, fruity, and peppery. You can see where this is not given the St Joseph name in the finish, which is not very complex and in fact a bit clipped, but that's not at all a knock on the wine. It's just the difference between one terroir and another greater terroir. Lovely wine.
