Community Tasting Notes (average 92.6 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 30 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by rmalloy on 9/9/2023 & rated 94 points: Unlike other Margaret River cabernets I’ve tasted. Big and ripe, while maintaining good acidity. Exceptional. (1162 views)
Tasted by Chimer on 5/22/2023 & rated 93 points: Deep colour, loaded with fruit and enjoyably elegant. Lovely ripeness, full, fleshy and fresh. I'm sure this will keep but it is already drinking ewell to my palate. 2nd day the aromas were a bit volatile and perhaps the alcohol showing a bit. (1305 views)
Tasted by deverett on 12/22/2022 & rated 90 points: Good wine but found it just a bit boring, couldn’t get any real excitement. Well balanced with luscious fruit, gravelly tannins and a medium finish. Has all the hallmarks of nice Cabernet (blackberry, olive tapenade and hints of cedar) but perhaps just completely closed right now, thought it would give a bit more. Not sure if it just needs more time or just is what it is and won’t improve. (1661 views)
Tasted by bennymac on 9/18/2022 & rated 97 points: Dark inky purple. A bit restrained in the nose when opened but developed lovely dark fruit, blueberry aromas. Cedar, clove. Long palate, full mouth experience. Dark berry fruit, some slight bitter chocolate and coffee. Well balanced acid and tannin. A great drop. (2097 views)
Tasted by rikipedia on 9/18/2022 & rated 91 points: Deep ruby in colour, the lifted aromas are pure and fresh with clean notes of herb, iris and black currant. A touch of mint, bay leaf and sage add intrigue, as does some spicy but measured oak.
Gorgeous entry, medium-bodied with a soft, smooth texture (has a sheen). There is a width to the mid-palate that displays sweet fruits, but this is tamed by bright, tingling acidity. The mid-palate is juicy and Eden with freshly picked blackcurrants with a few blackberries and blueberries thrown in. Reasonably complex, the wine exhibits layers of flavour and seamless tannin and yet has a fine-grained touch to support the structure. A long finish with spice and a minty farewell.,
A well-crafted wine, it is correct and beautifully framed but unwilling to let out all the secrets yet! (1805 views)
Tasted by angelcyn on 7/4/2022: Deep lush Cab, lovely fruity nose, blackberry plums on the pallate, very deep colour and a long finish, gave this a couple of hours decant, would like to taste a little less full on fruit but that is the style, nicely made wine with good balance and acidity. (1917 views)
Tasted by Screwcaps on 7/31/2021 & rated 95 points: 12 Moss Wood.

Pop and pour.

Deep, opaque, colour. Very little sediment.

Nose mute on opening.

Full bodied on entry. Intense, rich predominantly red and some black fruit.

Glides through some coffeed oak, in to a very long nori and tapenade finish. Tannins are ripe and in perfect harmony with the wine.

This is very long, it just keeps on rolling with all of that torque like a freight train.

It’s clearly in the outstanding zone, but still so dense, polished, elemental and primary and powerful with a touch of coffee oak to lose.

Now, on a quick taste, it’s 95/6 for me and feeling like I’ve opened it 10 years too early. Upside here is enormous, I get the hype, and also comments around oak treatments. (3134 views)
Tasted by foyfrcs on 5/8/2021 & rated 91 points: Deep garnet.
Damsons, plums, figs, prunes, spice, liquorice nose/palate.
Full bodied, medium acid, medium+ tannins. Long finish.
14% alcohol.
Very good wine which I think will improve and last for 5-10 years.
At least I hope so, first bottle of a case...... (2547 views)
Tasted by bestdamncab on 10/3/2019 & rated 99 points: Australian Wine Far from Ordinary Trade Tasting, San Francisco, retail $107 and worth it, nose of black berry, big body, showing well today, rich fruit, delicious tasting, mouth filling fruit, smooth, elegant, long, long, flavorful finish. (3819 views)
Tasted by PeterjW on 7/31/2019 & rated 93 points: beautiful rich dark berry nose with satin like tannins length and balance on the palate - drinking well now (3574 views)
Tasted by Gdubya on 9/28/2018 & rated 95 points: Really very good after a 1.5h decanter and still tasted like its best years are ahead. Tannins are rounding out and finish getting longer (3964 views)
Tasted by jrbates68@gmail.com on 3/10/2018 & rated 96 points: Absolutely superb. My wife is still singing its praises. Bursting with fruit with a gorgeous silky smooth finish. (2931 views)
Tasted by Jimmy_D on 12/31/2017 & rated 92 points: Took some time to get out of the blocks, a few hour decant did the trick. It opened up into a classy blend of red berries, cassis, fine tannins and smooth vanilla oak. Drinking nicely now, but will show a great deal better in several years. I don’t think you’re seeing the potential (or your money’s worth) at such a young age. (3715 views)
Tasted by jrbates68@gmail.com on 12/3/2017 & rated 96 points: This wine has finally hit its stride. Tis a pity I've already drank most of them waiting for this moment to arrive. An absolutely beautiful expression of Margaret River Cab Sav. (2961 views)
Tasted by jrbates68@gmail.com on 10/1/2017 & rated 94 points: My appreciation of this wine is growing with every bottle. Drinking beautifully now. (3013 views)
Tasted by jrbates68@gmail.com on 9/16/2017 & rated 95 points: This gets better and better with every bottle I try. A truly superb wine. (2600 views)
Tasted by jrbates68@gmail.com on 9/10/2017 & rated 93 points: Careful cellaring has paid dividends. This is a very Bordeaux style wine. Not overly complex on the palate but incredibly smooth. (2583 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 2/8/2017 & rated 91 points: Saturated, very dark red violet color; savory, tart red currant, menthol nose; tasty, poised, savory, tart red currant, menthol palate with good balancing acidity; needs 2 years; medium-plus finish 91+ points (1249 views)
Tasted by drjb on 2/5/2017 & rated 93 points: Opened in hurry after a corked bottle of Alion. Dense purple colour. Beautiful nose of dark fruits - black cherries, blackcurrant, plums and dark chocolate. Beautiful stacked palate leading into a fine mineral, tannin finish. Quite primary, elegant yet rich in the fine Margaret River tradition. (2810 views)
Tasted by RayOB on 5/17/2016 & rated 86 points: 67 Pall Mall (3134 views)
Tasted by KiwiSean on 5/8/2016 & rated 88 points: Dried fruits and wood on the nose. Dark fruit up front and then long tannins. Too earl to enjoy now, maybe another 5 years until it finds its age. (2686 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 11/26/2015 & rated 93 points: Ripe fruit on the nose, floral, smoky, earthy, herbal. On the palate layered and lively, very well balanced, rich, ripe but powerful tannins. Long, lingering finish. Hold. 92-93+ (3170 views)
Tasted by dchoo077 on 11/17/2015: Splash decanted and drank over the following hour. Not giving much on the nose. On the palate, intense dark fruit but oak and tannins understandably very prominent given the wine's youth. Ripeness of the tannins makes the wine approachable now but would recommend cellaring for 5-10yrs. Has a promising future. (2598 views)
Tasted by skurtz on 10/14/2015 & rated 90 points: On the nose, some floral cinnamon notes. This is a dry, medium bodied red with excellent integration of red fruit, spice, and tannins. Acid finish. Very young, it needs 5 years to mellow out. I can't say this is worth the (very high) price, at least right now it tastes like an inexpensive cab. (2203 views)
Tasted by jrbates68@gmail.com on 5/22/2015 & rated 88 points: Whilst the nose shows great promise, this wine needs lots of cellaring before it reaches its full potential. I'll reserve my judgement for another 5 years. (2023 views)

Moss Wood

Producer Website

Planted in 1969 Moss Wood is an important, founding estate of the Margaret River wine region, located in the northern sub–region of Wilyabrup, Western Australia. Clare & Keith Mugford, as winemakers, viticulturalists & proprietors, have been making wine & tending the vineyard at Moss Wood since 1984 & 1979, respectively. Their exacting viticulture ensures the production of grapes of excellent quality & they have created a stable of fine wines distinguished by their consistency over each vintage & their ability to age superbly.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon
