Tasted by Bakka on 4/6/2024 & rated 92 points: Another bottle from the great 2008 vintage in Champagne. Just love the vintage. This Grand Sendree has developed beautifully, with mature apples, pastry and all what I would expect. Nice and rounded mouthfeel. Can recommend. (288 views)
Tasted by swfc on 1/19/2024 & rated 93 points: Super bottle. Rich and round, but with lovely balance. This is drinking very well right now, and I wouldn't hesitate to open another (525 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 12/31/2023 & rated 93 points: Fifth bottle from a half case purchased from the Dutch importer in 2018. Identical to my previous note from 23 August 2023, on very fine form, layered and rich, harmonious and well-defined, vanilla and brioche noted in particular this time. Has been performing at peak for a few years now, do not wait too long. (1200 views)
Tasted by Ydaucourt on 12/31/2023 & rated 93 points: Finally at its best. I should have waited more. (477 views)
Tasted by jakakun on 12/17/2023 & rated 90 points: Started off strong, felt like it got a little flabby/one dimensional after 2 hours. (559 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 8/23/2023 & rated 93 points: Fourth bottle from a half case purchased from the Dutch importer in 2018. Still perfectly fresh and energetic, with a creamy richness on the palate and beautifully developing aromatic complexity, which is now a heady cocktail of fresh citrus, spiced red apple and white nuts, with floral lift and a hint of oak. Convincing finish, flowing with gentle bitters, very good length. Showing very well, at perfect peak for my palate. (1680 views)
Tasted by Aravind Asok on 9/23/2022: Popped yesterday. Notes from 24 hrs open. Still nervy and super-energetic. Very youmg. Lemon, soft toffee, maybe my last btl was a bit advanced? On the palate: amazing acidity, lovely density, slightly aggressive mousse, long finish. Dark and richly styled nonetheless. Yum. (1996 views)
Tasted by mxfnck on 7/31/2022 & rated 93 points: Dark yellow. The mousse is very fine yet persistent. Ripe apples on the nose and palate.
Rich and creamy, with slight oxidation notes. Beautiful acidity provides texture and good length.

Tasted by Collector1855 on 4/22/2022 & rated 95 points: 2008 Champagne - 25 top names tasted blind: During a blind tasting dinner. A generous friend brought this special wodden box with him containing 1x 2008 GS normal aged in the Domaine's cellar and 1x 2008 aged under water on the sea bed in Brittany, off the French coast. We were not given any information and were asked to assess the wines as they show. Interesting result. My tasting notes read as follows:
Normal 2008 GS: Beautiful nose of bruised apples, spices, more Pinot led, good aromatic persistence, showing some age, guessing 15y of age. (95pt)
Submarine 2008 GS: More citrus led, feels younger with less evolved Pinot aromas. Extremely precise palate, fresh, the bubbles are noticeably different here, much finer. Very elegant. (96pt)
What a surprise when we saw that these were the same wines with a different aging regime. Both great, but they were indeed quite different. (3498 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 12/3/2021: Just opened. Toasty and powerful. (2589 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 11/13/2021: La Fete: Gala Dinner (Chelsea Piers: Pier 60): Fresh and bright and very tasty. Excited we've got some bottles and this and looking forward to opening this many years in the future. (2129 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 10/1/2021 & rated 93 points: Another very fine bottle, for my palate at peak. Silky and seamless, complex and precise, marries considerable power with refinement, rich yet elegant, flavoursome and fresh, very good length. Drink now-2028 (or longer, depending on your personal preference). (2403 views)
Tasted by fizz on 9/1/2021: Creamy, citrus, nuts, touch of honey. Bright and fresh on the palate. Good power and drive here. (1845 views)
Tasted by the player on 7/12/2021 & rated 91 points: Very nice Champagne with golden straw color, tiny bubbles. Lots of toast, yeast and stone on the nose, reminiscent of aged champagne, lots of minerality on the palate, slightly metallic and flinty with brioche and citrus coming forward, and some finesse towards the finish. Not as big as DP from the same vintage but quite satisfying. (2065 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 6/7/2021: Super delicious and crispy. Going strong and no reason to rush. (1945 views)
Tasted by NYC_Maenad on 6/4/2021: First out of a case sourced in France, sitting in the cellar without moving after hitting our shores in 2019. Served in Lehmann Jamesse Prestige Grand Champagne stems. The first sniff had me riveted - beautiful and enticing, effortless harmony of citrus, fresh apricot, ripe granny smith apple with the skin, and some toasted walnut notes. In the mouth, the bubbles were delicate and lively, with plenty of taught acidity driving a wine of great energy. I loved the interplay of youthful mineral-driven character and some more broad and toasty notes, with a warm honey kiss. It needed a little time to get going fully, starting out a bit subdued. Not tight or shut down, but a little bit straight forward at first - all driving in one lane, JR said - then opened up and spread out, while also becoming more delineated. Very balanced and elegant, but with sizeable bones. My only criticism is the finish was a little shorter than I'd like, which will probably improve with some more time. Truly a beautiful champagne that doesn't seem to get much love in my circles. (2002 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 5/15/2021 & rated 91 points: Quite accessible, rich, balanced. 91 (1620 views)
Tasted by matage on 5/9/2021 & rated 91 points: Far more accessible than expected. Very velvety mousse. Cream custard, brioche, nuts, coffee with grilled lemon and... pomelo? with a touch of oak. Quite nice now in a richer style but will improve with age! (1454 views)
Tasted by camdawg on 4/18/2021 & rated 92 points: I bought a bottle of this three to four years ago, during a Drappier tasting at my local wine shop in Seattle, McCarthy & Schiering. I was in the mood for a nice Champagne, and decided this was the time to open it up.

This is in a great place. First, let's talk about the mouthfeel. Nice and smooth, the bubbles are persistent but small if you're drinking the same day you open the bottle. The wine glides onto your tongue so smoothly!

The flavor is a bit on the tart, dry side. Precise lemon acidity that lingers for a long time, along with strong minerality. Some hints of toast and sweetness, like graham cracker, sneak their way in.

If you don't finish the bottle on the first night, and keep it in your fridge, you might find on the next day that toasty, sweeter flavors become just a bit more prominent.

I enjoyed this a lot! Is it worth the $100 or more that you'll have to pay to get a bottle? That's a tough call. If you really know Champagne well, maybe you can get a $70 to $85 bottle that will equal this, or come close? But if I can find another 2008 bottle that's close to the release price I paid a few years ago, I'd gladly buy another bottle. (1445 views)
Tasted by Dalex on 3/12/2021 & rated 94 points: Geeze this was quite stunning. Bright, clean, hardly any of the brioche bread flavors (low dosage most likely) but such pure and radiant flavors. Loved it. Big step up from the 2009 (which is also great) (1406 views)
Tasted by Uncle Victor on 1/30/2021 & rated 93 points: Happy birthday to me! Unlike others I sadly did not have a selection of other champagnes to compare this to so my enthusiasm for this bottle may have been enhanced by the fact that it was just me and my wife enjoying a bottle on a winter’s night in the Rockies. This is my first bottle from a case and I look forward to aging with it. Combined notes from the two of us: Fresh orange peel and angel food cake with sliced peaches on the nose. Fresh mouth feel with supple finish. Walnut, honeysuckle, orange zest, marzipan, St. Andre cheese. Lovely bottle, but when this pandemic is over I look forward to some comparison tastings (in person!) with friends. (1648 views)
Tasted by fizz on 12/31/2020: Good ripe fruit, with a creamy intensity, good concentration and persistence. (1501 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 12/31/2020 & rated 93 points: A very fine bottle, a marvellous interplay of vinosity and minerally energy. Real concentration and drive. Completely fresh, rich but tightly wound, excellent now, with time in hand. From the ashes of 2020... (2172 views)
Tasted by Aravind Asok on 12/25/2020: Fantastic. On the nose: lovely rich cream, soft espresso, toffee, espresso, mixed with ripe lemon. On the palate: stunning acidity, lemon, lime, custard, rich coppery chocolate, lovely mousse and fantastic density. (1488 views)

Drappier

Producer Website

Michel Drappier is the seventh generation of the Drappier family. The family stretches back to the draper Rémy Drappier, who was born in 1604, but it was not until 1808 that François settled in Urville, in the south of Champagne, where Cistercian monks had settled in the 12th century. When Georges Collot, the maternal grandfather of Michel Drappier, planted his first Pinot vines in the 1930s, the neighboring winegrowers laughed at him, calling him “Father Pinot”. André and Micheline carried forward the style established by “Father Pinot” and created the prestige cuvée Carte d’Or in 1952.

Although the vines in Urville were originally planted by the Romans 2000 years ago, it was Saint Bernard, founder of Clairvaux Abbey, who had our cellars built in 1152.

Seven centuries later, in 1808, around this magnificently preserved testimony to medieval times, where the exceptional cuvées slumber, the family domaine was created which today is headed by Michel Drappier. An area in which Pinot Noir thrives, a grape variety which “runs through our veins”, Urville lies where our vineyard was first planted and is now cultivated according to organic and natural principles.

Just like the “archives” plotting the long history of our house, we also continue to cultivate forgotten and nevertheless unforgettable grape varieties: Arbane, Petit Meslier and Blanc Vrai.

Today, rather than sophisticated, sometimes overdone excellence, we prefer authenticity and a natural approach.

Thanks mainly to very low quantities of dosage and extremely limited use of sulphites, of which the Brut Nature Without Sulphur cuvée is the culmination, we are able to highlight the multifaceted aspects of our terroirs and our wine-making.

Champagne Blend

"Champagne blend" is a classic grape blend that typically includes Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and/or Pinot Meunier in any proportions.

However, this blend can also include Arbane, Fromenteau (Pinot Gris), Petit Meslier and/or Pinot Blanc as well.

France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of consistent quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Click for a list of bestselling items from all of France.
Sub-Region:

Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and Aÿ) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South. Champagne wine only uses three grape varietals (cépages): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
