Community Tasting Notes (average 90.7 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 182 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by JCGuthrie on 2/24/2024: Out of magnum. This took some time to open up. Gamey red fruit; seems like it's in a good spot now. CdPs seem to be more hit and miss for me these days and while I wouldn't search this out again, it was solid. (692 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 8/24/2023: This is one very ripe wine, very showy and flashy with gobs of rich black fruit. Nearly sweet but mostly savory with good depth and enough structure in the near background to remain fresh and balanced (enough). Drink up. (1707 views)
Tasted by HRT on 7/23/2023: From magnum. Expressive nose of black fruits and raspberry which carries on the palate. Smooth tannins and a nice finish. This opened about 30 minutes after decanting and well received by the crowd. (1099 views)
Tasted by prism on 3/27/2023 & rated 90 points: Slow O'd for 90 minutes. Not especially remarkable, but beautifully mature and easy drinking; some sediment in the bottle. (1187 views)
Tasted by John Nezlek on 3/19/2023 & rated 90 points: Note: I use the recommended scale so 85 represents a very good wine.

Great bottle. Perfect blend of traditional CDP flavors.
Would have given it a higher score, but the flavors were a little light.

From a magnum. Guest quaffed it down singing its praises.
I love to plunk a mag on the dinner table.
Everyone quiets downs because they know there will be enough. :-) (1214 views)
Tasted by levinml on 12/14/2022 & rated 91 points: Liking mid-range CdeP more than similarly priced cabs these days as they're more drinkable without food (i.e.,less tannic) with more complexity. That said, nice mid-week wine, but nothing special. (1177 views)
Tasted by guitarguy on 9/26/2022 & rated 91 points: Old school, ready-to-drink. Dominated by leather, moderate tannins and sour cherry. Chocolate and earth also appear. Drink now. As good as it has been. (1181 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 8/12/2022 flawed bottle: Very disjointed; nose is lifted, hot, and cough syrupy. Tastes a bit heat damaged but the cork and full were fine. Uggh. (1045 views)
Tasted by prism on 7/26/2022 & rated 91 points: Very soft, remarkably pleasant mouthfeel, mature but not over the hill. Still, drink within a year or two, tops. (1038 views)
Tasted by rnellans on 2/7/2022 & rated 91 points: Dark fruited. Better on second day. Herbal notes some olive notes on palate. Dusty tannins , lacks middle. Somewhat of a clipped finish no hurry to drink next one. (1573 views)
Tasted by Connecticut Wino on 1/22/2022 & rated 85 points: Hot and dusty upon opening. Ripe, plummy fruit is fading but not yet gone. Smoke, wood, and savory herbs are beginning to dominate. More appealing accompanying rich food (cassoulet). Day 2: fruit more evident along with notes of black licorice and cigar box. (1220 views)
Tasted by guitarguy on 1/7/2022 & rated 90 points: Smoky saddle with cranberry and slightly sour accents. Not overly complex but enjoyable. (1178 views)
Tasted by btock on 3/6/2021 & rated 88 points: Fruit has receded since last visit. Mild currant, with more dominant smoky notes. Best next to Dijon mustard roasted potatoes side dish on the plate, less so the spicy roasted chicken main. Starting to brick at the rims with color heading to the brown spectrum. Maybe some further secondary flavor things to come in this next phase, but I'm going to try and get at my 3rd bottle soon enough not to find out. (2083 views)
Tasted by SB5784 on 1/30/2021 & rated 90 points: Rich dark brick red color. Some signs of age. Nose filled with dark black fruit. Blackberry and cassis. Notes of chocolate, pepper and herbs. On the palate spicy black fruit with drying tannin and good acidity, especially considering the hot vintage. Still quite structured but it’s integrated and is drinking nicely. Spice filled tart blackberry with a slightly drying finish. In a good place right now. (2024 views)
Tasted by Jean-Philippe M on 10/2/2020: Encore un bb, beau Ch9 efficace. (2699 views)
Tasted by Mario17 on 9/30/2020 & rated 89 points: Typical Grenache nose, herbs, and a dark fruit profile. Palate is nice, tannins are round and silky, good weight and a certain richness. Aged well. 89-90

Nez typique de Grenache, des herbes et du fruit noir. Une bouche généreuse, gourmande , pleine et assez riche avec des tannins soyeux et ronds. 89-90 (2566 views)
Tasted by dsimmons on 9/30/2020 & rated 95 points: This wine has consistently improved since the first bottle I drank in 2011. Delicious with grilled pork loin chops. Concentrated, completely integrated, full bore CdP. Love this stuff and wish I had more than one bottle remaining. Drink or hold. (2359 views)
Tasted by levinml on 8/3/2020 & rated 91 points: Drank with Johnny as late evening cocktail in Bayfield. First night was outright excellent; good flavors, balance and complexity. Second night a little bitter or tannic finish cut my score, but overall nice drinking and different (in an interesting way) from your day to day bordeaux blend. (1678 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 7/7/2020 & rated 89 points: Better on night two. Initially seemed to be flabby and bland without much structure or complexity. A bit of a disappointment. (1702 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 5/29/2020 & rated 91 points: Very well liked by the missus, who is partial to new world Cali wines. Very characteristic plum color. Bold wine. Not very nuanced but pleasurable. (1590 views)
Tasted by guitarguy on 4/21/2020 & rated 90 points: I thought this was solid with ripe but not overripe red fruit and peppery underbrush underneath. (1775 views)
Tasted by jdr20 on 4/15/2020 & rated 92 points: Dark ruby, med+ opacity. Complex & intense combination of aromas; licorice, raspberry, red soil, leather, cashews, dried figs. Full bodied, expansive on the palate. Rustic feel with lots of tannins still, though very well balanced. All the flavors emerge plus some spices & black pepper. Long finish. High alcohol. (1703 views)
Tasted by Hollowine on 3/30/2020: Nose was tight as nails on first pour, got more expressive with some air. Thinking that this is in its peak drinking window and should likely hold for a bit but I wouldn't sit on them forever. (1819 views)
Tasted by Magnolian on 3/18/2020 & rated 91 points: Perfect cork. Light sediment. Touch of amber bricking, medium ruby color. 45-min decant. Pleasant strawberry sweetness on the attack. Body is typical CdP, slightly spicy red fruits with minerals. Finish veered into a touch of bitterness, but this faded with more air. Probably has peaked but I’m guessing this has 2-3 years left. (1648 views)
Tasted by Grinner on 1/11/2020 & rated 94 points: DAMN WiNOS (Rye Restaurant, Eugene): Just like my last bottle over 2 years ago this "overperfomed". Group WOTN, it's very complex with layers of savory flavors (garrigue, meat, anise, damp earth, and iodine) hovering over the liqueur like fruit and velvety texture. On plateau, now-2022. (SAINT SIFFREIN CdP) 2007 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Magnum Dear Friends, I was hoping to save this until just before the holidays (as a last hurrah, 2009 send-off of sorts) but recent reviews and subsequent allocation pressures dictate a Tuesday morning in November instead. If the 750mls of this wine were the steal of the vintage in 2007 Chëteauneuf-du-Pape, what does that make this? Large format wines from "the greatest vintage in history" with the highest rating/value crown of an entire appellation have only one place to go - away, quickly...and up (in price that is). There is something about the 2007 Saint Siffrein that has captured the fancy of a world audience and the 750mls of this wine are basically gone from the global market already. I cannot say that about any other wine from Parker's review - even the 100pt wines are still available on the open market. With that as a pre-curser, I gingerly segue to this... In general, magnums are tougher to obtain than 750s and the regular bottles of 2007 Saint-Siffrein were rare enough. To make matters even more interesting, Cyril Chastan (the owner of Saint-Siffrein) decided not to bottle any 3.0s of 2007 so the magnums are the only large format that will exist. He also bottles all of the magnums by hand - that takes time and it leads to fewer bottles (it takes too much effort). I probably don't need to go much further with this - I think you know where I'm headed. If you are looking for an investment or just a brilliant wine to drink at an important occasion 10-20 years down the road, you would be hard-pressed to find a better deal on a traditional large format Chateauneuf-du-Pape of significance. The 2007 in magnum is about the lowest priced birth-year investment you can make for an example that is nearly guaranteed to last for decades. As previously mentioned (ad finitum), the critical reviews and scarcity will follow this wine well into adulthood - even more so as corks are pulled and 2007 stocks begin to dwindle. In addition, I'm trying to get Cyril to personally sign each of the magnums - for authentication down the road and to keep this parcel special and separate from any other: VERY RARE - NO MAGNUMS OF THE 2007 HAVE BEEN SOLD IN EUROPE OR THE US - this lot is being hand-bottled expressly for you - that's as precious as it gets in high-end 2007 Chateauneuf-du-Pape. 2007 Saint-Siffrein Chëteauneuf-du-Pape 1.5lt Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Rhone8252

(SAINT SIFFREIN Chateauneuf du Pape) 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Dear Friends, Well, well, well. Our friends at Saint-Siffrein just pulled of the heist of the year in the Southern Rhone. Not only was their 2007 the highest rated/lowest priced Chateauneuf-du-Pape in the entire Parker review but the chatter around France right now has their stock on one of the fastest TGV rides I can remember. All it takes is one magic review and the wine-world is now banging down Saint-Siffrein's door. They are coming from everywhere (Japan, Russia, Brazil, etc) and Cyril Chastan, the owner, has locked himself in the cellar - the fax machine is out of paper at this point. The bottom line is you will be hard pressed to do better than this from any producer in the entire appellation - everyone in the retail and restaurant world knows it and consumers are always quick to pick up the trail of the next big thing. I've discussed auction values quite a bit lately and this wine is almost certain to increase in value - a lot. Not only is it very difficult to procure (Pierre Usseglio or Clos des Papes this isn't) but the scant current price makes it a candidate down the line for a very healthy increase. The WA review will follow this wine for the next two decades and the relatively elusive nature of the producer will give few collectors the chance to try or purchase the wine - you simply cannot find the 2007 Saint-Siffrein on the open market and what was available last week is now gone. All of this adds up to scarcity as the years click away - supply and demand will run its course. Now, for those of you that are actually going to drink this wine, in my vertical tasting of Saint-Siffrein (noted a few months ago), this wine came in third - which ultimately shows you how good the 2005 and 2006 are. It was apparent to me that the 2007 had the most compact potential of any of the wines but it was not a wine for today (which is what I said in my review). If you are buying for future consumption or for a 21st birthday, the Saint-Siffrein receives the price/value/ageing award for 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape. It is one of the finest traditional wines of the vintage and it is priced like many of the 1995s were on release - enough said: I think it's safe to say this wine is not going to be around very long. While I should probably save this offer for a holiday special in December, we've received so many 2007 CdP inquiries that I'm inclined to hit the send button on this and run for cover. Here goes.. 2007 Domaine de Saint-Siffrein Chateauneuf du Pape (If we are sold out when you reply and you consider a grey market source, be very careful - normally I would recommend other retailers but after speaking with Cyril this morning, there is very little chance they will actually get the wine - especially if it is being offered on pre-arrival. Stick to retailers in the following markets only: NY/NJ, Virginia/DC - that's it. I'm not sure if they are already sold out in those markets?). Saint Siffrein was founded in 1880 and since then successive generations have been increasing its profile and quality, and for the last thirty years it has been run along organic lines they will be certified organic this year. Domaine founder Siffrein Chastan’s great, great grandson Cyril Chastan took over the reins from his father Claude in 2005 and, as has often been the case in these parts, is now taking this estate to new levels by combining the best of tradition with a fresh approach and modern techniques. The domaine now covers 20 hectares, 15 hectares of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, mostly surrounding the beautifully situated property Mont Ventoux a distant view as one walks out of the winery door.

Blend: 65% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre, 5% Cinsault

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
