Family article on Didgori Wine Making Tsulukidze's Tetra - Mujuretuli (Georgia, Racha-Lechkhumi)

(Revision 1: Last edited by tward on 5/27/2024 8:42:52 AM) - view...

A blend of mostly (~three-quarters) the white grape Tsulukidze Tetra with the red grape (~one-quarter) Mujuretuli.

Per Jancis Robinson "Tsulukidze Tetra [is] a white variety mostly used for making sweet wine in Crimea, Georgia and Central Asia."

Per Wines Of Georgia "RACHULI (TSULUKIDZIS) TETRA [is] primarily grown in Georgia’s northwestern Racha region. Rachuli Tetra is a white grape that ripens neither early nor late, yielding soft wines with aromas of linden honey." and "MUJURETULI [is a] red grape from the Racha region [that] ripens later than average and has an exceptional capacity to accumulate sugars. Frequently blended with Aleksandrouli, Mujuretuli grapes can be made into classical dry red wines as well as naturally semisweet wines—a style known as khvanchkara."

Family article on Rockford Shiraz VP (Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley)

(Revision 1: Last edited by LindsayM on 5/23/2024 5:51:57 AM) - view...

World demand for the great dry red Shiraz made from old, low yielding, Barossa vineyards has seen the "Vintage Port" that used to be made from the same vineyards become an endangered species. We celebrate the end of vintage by fortifying the last tank of fermenting Shiraz with 12 year old,
wood-aged brandy spirit. The sinful smells and vibrant purple explosion that erupts when these two meet draws most of the staff to this rather decadent ritual. If the wine captures half of the guilty indulgences that ooze from our group then the people who share this delicious bottle of Australian wine are going to have a very good time.

Dancing Fig Mataro / Grenache / Shiraz
The grapes for this classic blend of grenache, mataro and shiraz are sourced from several family vineyards throughout McLaren Vale.

Mataro is grown near Willunga, in the south, on slate soil, whereas the Grenache and Shiraz are grown on the northern end of the Coriole estate on terra rossa soils.

"Dancing Fig" refers to the many species of fig, fruiting and ornamental, that are grown at Coriole.

The fruit for this wine is sourced from the oldest parts of the vineyard. In 1975/6 our first Riesling blocks were planted on two gentle ridges lying side by side. Sharing a similar NNW aspect and very similar soil composition, both blocks have a dominance of gravelly, ironstone-rich, free draining clay loam. A further block planted in 1977 tends to a WNW aspect, has less gravel, more sandy loam, and closer proximity to its limestone base. We find the combined expression of these soils show white florals aromatically and layers of mineral, textural intensity throughout the palate. The clone is G198.

This vintage was made with 100% whole-bunch pressed fruit to enhance textural depth, largely due to the cool nature of the season. A natural settle in tank preceded a combination of spontaneous and inoculated fermentation – predominantly in stainless steel. After cool fermentation, the wine spent an average of 6 weeks on lees prior to racking, sulphur addition and blending.

Family article on Reschke Cabernet Sauvignon Empyrean (Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra)

Empyrean Cabernet Sauvignon

‘Empyrean is Latin for the highest sphere in which the purist elements of life exist’.

The vines are meticulously hand pruned as one measure, to keep the vineyards balanced and yields low. The result is small thick-skinned berries expressing pure Coonawarra character. The resulting wine is complex and lengthy, with malolactic fermentation and maturation being completed in only hand selected new French oak. Each vintage is scrutinized and only the best of them make it through, ensuring quality parameters are met. When they are not achieved, this wine will be blended back into our next offering and not released. The result is a distinguished, powerful Cabernet Sauvignon that certainly leaves a lasting impression.

Empyrean quality pushed Reschke into the forefront of the evolving Australian wine industry, establishing it as a reputable Coonawarra icon.

As affirmed by leading US wine critic Robert Parker, Reschke “may well be the benchmark for Coonawarra’s famed Cabernet Sauvignon."

Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon
Region: Coonawarra

Family article on Chalmers Aglianico (Australia, Victoria, Central Victoria, Heathcote)

(Revision 2: Last edited by LindsayM on 5/6/2024 2:03:26 AM) - view...

In the quest for grapes which produce excellent wines in warm Aussie conditions in the face of climate change, Aglianico has won the race. A late ripening grape, it cruises through summer to ripen slowly in the cooler autumn months giving a lower alcohol yet complex and refined red wine capable of long ageing. Made in a chestnut botte and bottle aged before release, Chalmers Aglianico has earned its place at the top of the range showing all the hallmarks of a great red wine. Poise and structure, freshness and complexity, this wine has it all. – Chalmers

What is a Botte
Wooden barrels of 10, 200 or 300 hl. They can be made from either Slavonic oak or chestnut. Unlike smaller barriques, botti (= plural of botte) are used for several years.

Family article on Pierro Chardonnay VR (Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River)

(Revision 1: Last edited by LindsayM on 5/5/2024 11:25:19 AM) - view...

"The thing is with wine you only have one chance each year to refine and improve what you do.This also demands a careful balance between tradition and change. So it can take many years to build a body of knowledge. I first made Chardonnay in 1980 and I hope this wine expresses the 40 years of accumulated experience and heritage. We have matured this wine for 4 years in bottle for you and it is ready to drink now. It will also continue to age gracefully for a further 6 years if cellared in cool conditions at 14-16 degrees."
-Mike Peterkin

VINEYARD

Parcels of fruit are handpicked from the north facing slopes of Pierro property in Willyabrup. Each block features unique high-density narrow rows on rocky soil that slope down to the Willyabrup Brook. All vines are mature (over 30 years old), low yielding, with the canopy pruned so the fruit rests close to the earth. This leads to a lower quantity of higher quality, balanced fruit on each vine, rich in concentration and flavour. All vineyard parcels are situated within 3km of the coast and are influenced by the maritime climate and fresh, pure ocean sea breezes prevalent during the growing season .The vineyards are managed to maximise fruit, leaf and cane exposure to sunlight; minimise wind damage in the spring and to heighten flavour development in the summer ripening period. 100% of the VR is from gin-gin clone chardonnay which has proven itself to to produce the best quality wine, and one that has been particularly successful in Margaret River.

WINEMAKING

Each parcel is hand-picked, chilled, hand-sorted and gently whole bunch pressed. There are multiple picks for this wine. With the first batches being picked for aromatic complexity and acidity and the latter picked for flavour and body. All juice is settled and then fermented in French barriques. The wine goes through a full malolactic fermentation which helps achieve superior texture, mouth feel and a more refined, persistent flavour. Lees are stirred fortnightly by hand in barrel over a period of 12 months prior to blending, settling and bottling. The VR is a selection of the best 10 barrels that Pierro produces and is made only in only exceptional vintages.
