  • 2020 Bakkheia Tripartite

{screwcap, 14%} A little development here. First time I've really noticed a minty character to one of Bakkheia's reds. Spice too, rich black fruit, plum. Palate has soft, seemingly oakless tannins, moderate acid. Medium weight, but does become a little more astringent on the medium-length finish. Does rather hollow out a bit though, I must say. Ready to drink.

  • 2019 Grosset Pinot Noir

{screwcap, 14%} Hint of rust in the pale garnet hue. Softly developing nose. Spicy nose, fermenting not-too-ripe strawberries. Palate is diffuse, also spicy, with a strong meaty character, and soft-grained oak. No more than light/medium-bodied though. Prickly, low-key finish, dry, patchy on the palate. Decent if not really memorable. Ready to drink

  • 2014 Peter Lehmann Shiraz VSV Carey

{screwcap, 14.5%} Deep colour, but with a bricking edge in line with a decade. Rich nose of blackberry, soy, cola, liquorice. Palate is a bit light for structure, despite the overall medium full weight, with low dusty tannins and low/medium acidity. Also sits toward the front of the tongue, and with a barely medium-length finish. Not overly alcoholic but lacks finesse and true development. Nowhere to go in my view, although it’s going to be ‘drinkable’ for years.

10/29/2023 11:14:00 AM - Thanks for your input Graemeg! It's appreciated. Now looking forward to renew my acquaintance with Australian wine scene. Cheers! Bandreas

10/27/2023 8:49:00 AM - Hello Graemeg, Looking for some advice: Will be visiting Australia in December/January and will be in Rutherglen to revive the romance of the liqueur wines I tasted/bought when I lived in Melbourne in the 70ies. What two or three wineries should I visit for a tasting? Do I need to make tasting reservations? What Coonawarra producers do you recommend? FYI in the 70ies I very much liked the 66 Wynn's Coonawarra Shirax and the 69 Redman Coonawarra Shiraz (the producer was Owen Redman). This gives you an idea of my stylistic preferences.. Thanks a lot for your help! Cheers Bandreas

5/30/2016 9:45:00 PM - hi wineotim; it was spectacularly hard to find in Oz as well! I think on the back of near-100 point reviews from some critics (dunno who) the vast bulk of it was shipped off to China to attempt to cash in...

5/30/2016 12:40:00 PM - graemeg, any idea why it was and is so difficult to find the '10 Penfolds St. Henri in the USA?

  • Tony Poli says:

5/14/2015 8:07:00 AM - Graeme: love your imagery. Penfolds St. Henri like a "V12 idling at 900 rpm." I wish I had thought of that. And I envy your access to Margaret River wines. Precious few from places like Evans & Tate make it to Pennsylvania, USA. Cheers!
