  • 2019 Château Poujeaux

Gave it an 8 hour slow ox which was not enough so then fully decanted for two hours before dinner. Did have some fine sediment. Dark ruby in the glass, the nose and palate are classic BDX with an emphasis on the fruit and cassis because it is young. Some hints of cedar/earth and chocolate. The tannins were softer and rounder than I expected. Nicely balanced with a medium body and acidity. This is the first of three bottles and I wanted to try one now to track it's evolution, which I expect to be long and elegant. Pretty good QPR and a fine expression of BDX outside of the main AOCs. If you are looking for a cheap-ish case buy to stash in the cellar and forget about for 10 years or more, this is your huckleberry. A long decant is recommended if drinking now.

Wow! This is just spectacular QPR for sub-$30 and a pleasure to drink. Pale straw color. Crisp tart orchard fruit and lemon curd on the nose, which follows over to the palate with a touch of nuttiness. There’s also some saltiness, like drinking a sea breeze. Concentrated with a 30 second finish. Première Cru without the price. Delicious pairing with the shrimp piccata. 91-92.

  • 2022 Coudert Fleurie Clos de la Roilette

Lovely gamay and my first from this producer. Darker and broodier that I'm used to from the region and variety. Also this is 14% so maybe the warmth of 2022 has something to do with that. Quite fresh though with a good balance of bright bramble fruits, earth, medium acidity and body, and tannins that have a little unwelcome harshness to them. Not a dealbreaker, but they just seemed edgy. I should not be surprised at this however since it is so young and it does suggest that several years in the bottle will serve this well. A good wine and a good bargain for bottles in the low $20s.

12/15/2023 3:51:00 PM - ClayM I really like your story and mine is somewhat similar. Beware, I started with a 35 bottle refrigerator and now I have a 200 bottle refrigerator in my garage and a 300 bottle refrigerator in my Dining room. The people on CellarTracker have helped my wine journey so much. More than half the bottles I collect were recommendations from other members that were spot on. Welcome and Cheers!

3/21/2023 10:30:00 PM - ClayM......my personal fav is Bellevue-St. Emillion, not Mondotte. About $40/bottle, usually 100% merlot. Owned by the Angelus people, it is right next door to them. Same winemaker, too. My second fav is Chateau de Pressac, also around $40-45/bottle. Been to them both and they are both great deals. I have each in my cellar.

3/20/2023 8:30:00 AM - ClayM....you're welcome! Good luck in building your cellar up....that's always a challenge, but a lot of fun, too. I bet you end up way past 40 bottles, though!
