  • I believe this was the last vintage made from the iconic vines on the outskirts of Santiago. Has that tell-tale Iodine-tinged Antiguas Reservas nose! Still bright and fresh and without a hint of oxidation. Medium-bodied with a juicy, lively palate. Red and black currants, spices, mint, new oak and mineral-laden, freshly turned earth. This has aged FANTASTICALLY well! I knew from vertical tastings at the winery, this cuvee ages exceptionally well, but this is my first old bottle that was stored from release in my cellar. 90

  • * Nose: Black currants, then leather, wood, some smoke. Later comes pencil led, prunes, dust and suddenly lots of vanilla.
*Taste & palate: Mature, sweet black currant and blueberry fruit. Medium rich body with a "slickness" typical of bottle ageing. Hints of burnt oak, but only a hint. Mature, rounded and slightly spicy, peppery tannins.
    - Mature but surprisingly good and alive for this 16 YO Chilean CS. Reading earlier comments from around 10 years ago it seems that this, once probably over-oaked CS, has actually come around and reached some level of balance or harmony. It clearly has reached its peak but I think it might still drink well for another 1-3 years. After that, however... (I would not look forward to when it starts loosing much more of its fruit).

  • Pretty ordinary stuff. Somewhat varietally correct, light, fairly balanced but neutral in nose, palate and finish. A little green bell pepper/eucalyptus on the finish.

Tasted back in 2011 with consistent results.

  • Definite eucalyptus taste present. Not something I particularly like in an old cab but then I find this "flaw" (characteristic?) more often than I like in Chilean Cabs and is one of the many many reasons that I really don't buy much from Chile anymore. Cleaning out the cellar and its a hamburger on the grill night..... Having said that, its OK. Just. Other than the above noted "characteristic", its still got good color, a little mint on the nose, a tad raisiny, but still fairly balanced and enough to pair with the burgers. Would have hoped for better, but as Chile "went International" in their approach and style in the 1990's, anything local was lost and they introduced a good-better-best approach so that this (which use to be the winery's best back in the 70's and 80's - I still have a few bottle of various 80's vintages in my cellar that I will open and review in time) wine has become a shadow of its former self. What a shame.

  • I was surprised this still showed as much tannin as it did -- not bad, but so clearly more than the 1998 we had on the same night. A great wine at the price with good dark rred fruits and some minerality. My last bottle of a bunch, but these would have lasted longer.
