The latest vintage or Porseleinberg (v21, 13.5% ABV) is simply stunning - the grace of RSA syrah bottled in an ethereal, pure & sappy fashion - complex, layered & nuanced winemaking. Deep purple-red, violet reflections, semi-translucent in appearance. Gloriously perfumed w red cherries, raspberries, lavender, lots of spice. Excellent concentration on the m+-bodied palate, yet ethereal in style due to perfectly balanced acidic structure, juicy, fruit-driven to perfection, layered, understated tannins, v long close!

Another great success…one of my favourites. Cote Rotie with a new world twist is the popular take home…and it’s bang on. I’ve reviewed 2019 and 2018…and I’d agree that there’s a fresher feel with the 2021.

Porseleinberg mini-vertical, including 2021, 2019, 2015, and 2010.
Likely the best Porseleinberg to date to my palate. Crunchy, stalky, herb and fynbos. Gritty, but super intense. Balanced fruit profile, a lot less meaty than some previous vintages. Crushed rock, and a bit of pepper to finish. This is going to be a beauty with a bit more bottle age.

I really wanted to enjoy this but I’ve now tried it three different times in both the UK and South Africa with similar notes: Boisenberry and Foynbos on the nose, not showing a lot of cluster influence. On the palate the fruit is ripe and broad but even in a long, cool growing season and only 13.5% ABV, the wine doesn’t have enough acidity to make this refreshing or moreish on the palate. the finish shows raspberry but is quite meaty. Amongst the best South African Syrahs I’d take Lismore Estate Reserve, Sons of Sugarland and Rall’s Ava & Noa single vineyards ahead of this, all at similar or lower pricing.
