Pulled the cork at 4:30 and poured off a taste. Seemed expressive enough so that I didn’t decant. We got into it at about 7:30. This is a truly lovely wine that is expressive and harmonious on both the nose and the palate, and also shows a real sense of place. The wine is more mineral than anything else, on both nose and palate. Smoke inflected stone, and a forest floor element permeate the dark blue and black fruit. It’s a cylindrical and focused nose and it’s suave rather than explosive. This all carries through to the palate which also has this wonderfully firm structure. This is definitely of the Bonnes Mares family of chambolle. I loved it. But those looking for a panoply of fruit and flowers will be disappointed.

From 75cl, perfect cork; decanted 1 hour; continued to improve until final drop. Visuals: Crimson-orange edge signals maturity, dark red-purple heart signals concentration and plenty of time to go. Both are true. Superb consommée and complex spice on the nose; big-bodied entry with a sweaty-unctuous texture heralds major dark-cherry-meets-oriental-spice-bazaar excitement. Superconcentrated PN fruit, what you always hope for in a CdN 1er Cru from a celebrated producer, but so rarely actually get. No, despite the richness and exotic spice we're not in Vosne (this is just too earthy, no hint of greenness, but a lot of compost-like soil goodness). Gevrey would be a bit more straightforward(?) Chambolle-Musigny, a great 1- Cru? This is my happy place, finally, after a round dozen expensive Burgundy disappointments, here is the right bottle at the right age, again, just in time. 93P

This was a replacement for the restaurant’s last bottle of Barthod’s 2009 Chambolle Charmes which turned out to be corked. Maturing ruby turning to garnet. Some funky cheese rind was present on opening but blew off quickly. Then sappy ripe cherry and soil which seemed clunky at first, definitely heavier than typical Chambolle. Over a few hours, it really started to unfold with the fruit sweetening, acidity firming up, and the feel becoming more airy. Given this trajectory, I recorked half of the bottle and will return to it later.
Coming back to it 6 hours later, it continued to show more plummy fruit, citrus, and now more chocolaty, earthy tannins which eventually shut the wine down. To be honest, some pruniness also appeared. This is a big Chambolle which despite its color will go on for quite a while. I don’t think it will ever be regarded as one of the more elegant or balanced renditions of Les Cras from this great producer.

I find 06 to be a challenging year with many thin, slightly astringent wines, of which this is emblematic.

Passed its peak.flat and muted nose. Medium acidity. Few floral notes. Disappointed.
