Drank from a magnum that I bought in 2010. Dark garnet with slight brick red tinge, showing aromas of dark cherry, dark plum, earth, vanillin oak, spice and just a hints of bell pepper. Clearly better than '03 that I tasted early of the year with more primary fruits. Dark cherry and dark plum on palate with sweet plummy fruits well balance by the oak. Some subtle leather notes emerge in the glass after some time add to the complexity. Nice fresh and silky mouth-feel and tart acidity. Good medium+ finish with notes of spice, chocolate and touch of mint. Tannins is pretty soft and smooth. Drinking very nicely and the key here is balance and mellow.

Big fruity, velvety explosion of a merlot; definitely an Aussie style wine. Great flavors, but a bit too one dimensional for me to rate it a bit higher.

(HAAN MERLOT Prestige) UPDATE: Illinois Shipping I have been asked to speak at a consortium of US wine retailers on this topic and I thought it prudent to solicit your thoughts. As most of you know, Illinois has banned direct shipments come next June and I (like most wine-minded adults) am more than perplexed. Do they really think wine drinkers in Illinois are going to stop ordering wine from across the country? Wisconsin and Indiana are only a short ride away and I’ve heard they make for a lovely Saturday afternoon drive to a border town Mailboxes Express... For those of you that live in Illinois, we would like to solicit your thoughts and ideas to help us (and other purveyors) combat this potential quagmire that may ultimately be unconstitutional - you’d think we have better things to spend our time on like global warming, world famine, wars or other? If you are an Illinois resident (or resident of any state for that matter), we’d like to hear your thoughts on potential solutions to help our Illinois brethren continue to receive wine from us and all of the other wine store in the US. Please send your ideas to: shira@garagistewine.com Thank you – have a great weekend! - Jon Rimmerman ************************* Haan SPECIAL Dear Friends, Here’s a Friday special on a wine that has been a crowd favorite in preceding vintages (this is the new release) – at what should be just about the lowest price ever offered in the world. Continuously one of Parker’s most admired Merlot cuvees outside of Bordeaux, this wine has fooled many in the past as it can be very tough to pinpoint as Australian (but this has more to do with preconceived notions about what Australian wine “should” taste like than the actual reality). This is another one-time deal and I had to cut our margins to a precarious point to get this in at a moderate price (maybe I’m an easy target to be Mr. Nice Guy at the end of the week, but I seem to be doing this an awful lot on Friday afternoons). This version (the 2004) reminds me of the 2001 when it was still in barrel with the Cabernet Franc influence waiting to unfold. If you yearn for the glory days of Pahlmeyer Merlot circa 1995 or even a baby post-Perse Pavie style, you will find much to admire here for a lot less of an investment: ONE SHIPMENT ONLY at this price with perfect provenance: 2004 Haan Merlot Prestige (WA89-91) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Aus2967

Vintage Australian Wine Tasting (Extra Space): Some green chilli on the nose. Smooth body and fruits but a little one dimensional. Nothing memorable.

As good as the last bottle. Makes you sit up and take notice from the first sip.
