Feels like it was immensely powerful and concentrated in its youth; it's drinking rather nicely after 20 years of fading and smoothing. Concentrated flavours of blackcurrant and prune, with funky notes of dried mushroom, soy sauce, raisin, and anchovy. The flavour is dehydrated and decayed (in a good way), and well balanced by acidity (bright) and tannin (big, but very faded).

Nose shows bold, fruity notes of kirsch, cherry jam, and dark chocolate, a background of oak, and a hint of balsamic vinegar. Palate shows strong acidity (with a slight vinegar note at first). Tannins are big and heavy, but faded and smooth. Dark, strong flavours of cocoa, soy sauce, prune, and raisin over a background of forest floor and dark, wet earth.

Rich but mellow. At a perfect age. No wonder some of the best wines of Bordeaux are Merlot. This wine shows what a fine varietal Merlot can be when handled properly

Intense caramel, vanilla and confected. Spicy, bit smoky, rich and plum. Hedonistic and satisfying. Bordering on overdone but held it together. My last bottle and held up well for a 11 years old Aussie Merlot.

Great. Doesn’t need much air time. Fair whack of oak but still plenty of fruit. Will drink well for at least the next 3 years.
