needs an hour of air for the oak to blow off or settle down works great with most food but enjoyed with a tomato based chicken curry (Kadai of karahi). Was pretty nice after dinner as well

A Ridge Tahoe Weekend; 6/29/2023-7/2/2023 (Edgewood Resort): My first time with this wine. Interesting. It comes from a vineyard that is all sandy loam (think basically a beach). Means that it is planted on old French rootstock. Vines from the 1880’s and some from the 1890’s. There’s been maintenance and replacement as needed in the vineyard but overall these are proper old vines which fits with the theme of the tasting. This is very easy drinking. Kind of smooth in style. Pepper and red fruits. One of the first wines that gets picked. A nice blend across Carignane, Zinfandel and Mataro. The Carignane is the primary which you don’t see so often. Works though. Not a wine really for aging but one that drinks well young. Would be interesting to do a food pairing with it. Suspect that would bring the wine alive a bit more.

My only bottle of this vintage. Opened but not decanted for over 45 minutes before pouring. I like the blend and at 14/1% alcohol it tasted more restrained than I was expecting, if a 47% Carignane, 29% Zinfandel, 24% Mataro blend can be called elegant, this would be it. Dark color, lots of dark fruit. Very enjoyable.

PnP. Color is deep garnet. On the nose: Red and black berries, vanilla and fruit roll ups. On the palate: Red and black berries, vanilla , some dusty tannins and baking spices. Not complex, simple but solid. I think the Mataro is really helping the wine.
