What it lacks in complexity, it makes up for in balance, I love the sweet entry, surprisingly dry finish, and nose dominated by elderflower. It's the perfect summer nightcap or summer lunch wine.

Sweet entry but a dry a and long finish. Should be a great match to spicy food but also a great wine without food. Just a little fizz that gives it extra energy. Loved it!

This is part of my quest to try and find a reasonably priced substitute for quality German riesling trocken, and understand why the very reasonably priced South Australian rieslings the critics rave about are not easy to like. That is why they are cheap, I suppose. But it gives me hope that Riesling in general might be so unfashionable I can find some huge bargain. I suspect the South Australian ones just need laying down for 20 years or something, but we can't always wait that long.
But I think I have kind of failed from the outset here, because this is definitely not dry. It's not quite spatlese sweet, but I'm confident this one is medium. And indeed when we look up the technical data, it has 30 g/l of residual sugar. That's not the 60g/l you might get on a top spatlese, but it's clearly into that category.
That aside, this is just a wonderful wine. After my experience with the Paul Cluver Elgin Riesling from South Africa earlier in the week, which needed some time open to compose itself, being so young, I decanted this one a couple of hours in advance, and had no issues with it. It drank consistently and well over 4 days. It is just such a joy to drink. Complemented some spicy curries, as well as just being for drinking on its own. Even went with some emmental-style cheese.
So, I haven't succeeded in finding a substitute for GG trocken riesling, but I have found some very delicious riesling at a very reasonable price. It's certainly going to replace my purchases of Dr Loosen's Grey Slate, though of course that is not much more than half the price.
