  • Way more mature than my previous bottle (Nomarcork-variation, eh). There is still fruit and it is by no means tired but it has dried up to a certain extent and lacks the depth and vibrancy of the previous bottle. Not bad but not something I would rebuy either.

  • Super aromatic on the nose with hauntingly beautiful sour cherry fruit, dust, leather, a tiny bit of spicy oak and a wonderful hint of truffle. Awfully pretty with excellent depth and detail and such a sense of place that nailing this blind would not be a meaningful feat at all. On the palate this is on the richer side of medium bodied with an absolutely velvety mouthfeel. I reckon it has had some structure in its youth as despite having all the angles smoothened out it is still remarkably lifted with good grip. It’s the real deal Holyfield, i.e. dry, thoroughly savory and refreshing with the 13.5% not apparent really, although there is something powerful about it. The long finish has a lip-smacking quality to it and overall the evaporation rate is tremendous. Overall this is a tremendous bottle or traditional Sangiovese (blend), a definite rebuy.

  • This was a random bottle from the cellar on normal a Thursday night paired with a simple bowl of Mezzi Rigatoni and Marinara. I know very little about this Biodynamic estate but with Dressner as the importer, it has my attention. It appears to be declassified Chianti Rufina.

Popped and poured; consumed over several hours. In the glass, deep ruby with a translucent core and slightly browning edges, possibly indicating its near 11 years of age. Medium viscosity. On the nose, stewed black berries and black cherries, some VA, old leather bound books and dusty earth with medium+ intensity. On the palate, a rather powerful cherry red rope licorice character dominates accompanied by mushrooms, dried herbs and a bitterness that reminded me of walnuts. Medium tannins which seem completely integrated at this point. The acid seems to be on the higher end of the scale yet, the wine remains fairly balanced since it’s so well endowed with fruit. Medium+ finish.

I gotta say, I’m really digging this wine. It was fun on its own and worked really well with food. If this bottle is an indicator of the estate’s style and quality then I am definitely looking forward to experiencing more. Drinking very well now so no need to hold longer. Bottle number 0365 of 1350.
