  • Still plenty of fruit; like a well-aged bordeaux. No decant - gradual evolution over 2-3 hours.

  • Excellent, superb wine, with so much character and depth, totally belying its age. 14.5% alc.
    Colour: deep black berry
Bouquet: rich black berries, spice, coffee, liquorice, tobacco pouch, boot polish, black olives, black pepper
Palate: characters as bouquet, plus mint, so full bodied, rich and voluptuous, big soft fine grained tannins, velvety texture, savoury and very dry, long lingering finish. Aged so well and would live so much longer.

  • Bought 12b (two 6-packs) for 20/b from a local retailer 12-13 years ago. I think this is bottle #8 from that purchase. Decanted through a coarse wire mesh filter: normal sediment for its age, but some adhered to the bottle--only a bit in the last two pours. Very good dark ruby color with no amber; very fragrant Bdx nose with just a hint of eucalyptus; very good mouthfeel with broad red fruit flavors; very good finish. Not as fruit forward as earlier bottles but more nuanced and still delicious with no sign of decline--a wine that continues to reward patience amply. Drunk with an '02 Ch Lynch Bages for comparison, and my more talented colleague thought this was the Lynch (see related TN on the Lynch). Stored horizontally in a cool, dark basement since purchase. My evaluation: I've stopped giving scores on a "100-point scale" as I've become less convinced that they can be meaningful to others. I use a 4-category scale (perhaps with +/-)--not including flawed--which runs outstanding/notable/drinkable/poor. I considered this outstanding- when considering quality, age, and price.

  • d'Arenberg' reds keep well as also this Galvo Garage shows. Highly attractive nose with coffee-beans, cacao, some tar, beef-jerky and fresh blueberries. On the palate smooth and silky, good mid-palate with the dark fruits, coffee-beans, cacao and tar returning. Lingering finish but with a less attractive alcohol note.
