A blend of the best of tertiary notes from both Burgundy and Bordeaux. Forest floor, horse stall, hints of saddle leather. Red fruit trying to break through, but not yet there after 30 mins open. Perfumed floral notes beginning to float, umami resonating in the background. Medium plus acidity on the palate, a touch of cornichons (Shannon’s note), I get pickle juice. Yet again a display of HQ Rioja from an old-school producer, showing that 25+ years of age is prime-time. @ EMP

A Medlar lunch (Medlar, London): Served single blind alongside the GR. near identical colour, the R just a little brighter. Lovely dusty, briary red fruit. Densely silky. Mellow. Maybe a little flat on the palate cf the nose in relative terms. Initially served a little warm but focuses up nicely when cooled. Lovely wine and pretty consistent with previous bottles. ****

Floral notes, with red cherries, iron, old leather, forest floor, and berries on the nose. Good acidity and quite structured still with sweet red fruit and cherry flavors on the palate. Nice finish. This is in a great spot right now, but has the stuffing to age for another decade or two.

First, what a lovely colour. Dark mahogany, Nose, total furniture polish. Mouth, black fruits, tobacco, warm spices, incense and more. Lively acidity, good length. Really very good old school Rioja. This is very much into the mature spectrum but who knows for how long for this particular batch.

Remarkable sweetness amongst the leather and leaves. Youthful. Long finish
