The Paso Robles is, as always, 100% Zin. No real difference from when I pulled a bottle in April: very much burgundy colored; classic rhubarb, blackberry, Zin funk, coffee (much more so than the last bottle) and, yes, some mocha on the finish. The tannins are smoothing out offering up a balanced but powerful wine. 14.8% alc. Some sediment. With pork barbecue (from 3 Lil Pigs). 07.14.22. Recommended.

The Paso Robles is, as always, 100% Zin. This was the second wine of the evening before heading out to St. Louis. Burgundy color in the glass with telltale rhubarb, blackberry, and a touch of mocha on the finish. While the tannins aren’t edgy they still deliver a lot of power. 14.8% alc. Some sediment. With blue cheeses. 03.31.22. (and the balance on 04.04.22) Recommended.

Still hanging in there but getting a little syrupy. Past its prime? Prob, but this Zin doen’t do much more than mellow with age. Should have drunk a few years ago per JO’s advice I am drinking it up.

A nose of raspberry jam, pond water and rubbing alcohol. On the palate there is crunchy, acidic fresh fruit but an opposing back note of overripe fruit and a bit cooked. It was better than I make it sound but I find high alcohol wines not that useful at the dinner table. I feel I am getting full from the wine instead of the food.

For this week’s pandemic virtual tasting with Ridge, we pulled one of our favorite Zins : the Paso Robles 100% Zin, one of the few Zins Ridge makes that is always 100% Zin. This is also my first tasting of the 2012 vintage. It took a while for the wine to open up despite Eric Baugher’s notes on the back that it will be best in 2018. The wine is that young. Notes of brown sugar, molasses, blackberry, bramble berry and spice, but with very little rhubarb. It’s a remarkable wine. No sediment. (We also opened a Lagier-Meredith Tribidrag 2012 following the tasting for dinner. PM did not care for it, likely due to the perceived sweetness of the Ridge that was followed by the structured and brooding L-M. 14.8% alc. With (beef) London broil. Recommended.
