Good colour. Fair fruit - raspberry, cherry, some dark fruits but slightly jammy. Decent acidity but not quite balanced. Less body and character than expected. A tannic finish. Disappointing at first but it opened with time and improved with food and others liked it quite a lot. I have raised my initial score a little.

a big, inky black soup of cigars, prune, cherry and cherry pits. very nice. very good acid/fruit/tannin balance. let breathe an hour at this point to soften the tannins a bit and let it open up. good for another 2-3 years.

I am not a D'Arenberg ra-ra boy. I know this wine is a low label for these guys but it was still pretty plain Jane, especially for a $50 restaurant purchase. Stale, unscented and a typical D'Arenberg short finish. However it was rather inoffensive, although completely underwhelming is better put.

NEWTS Tasting. D'Arenberg - Style over substance or substance over style (Newcastle upon Tyne): A much better wine. Nose is deep and smoky with a richer cooked fruit note. Earthy.
Palate delivers chewy and slightly rigid tannin with spicy fruit yet fresh acidity. The fruit fades quickly leaving a tannic finish. It's ok.

Eye: deep purple. Nose: dried fruit, plums, high alcohol. Palate: jammy, moderate structure and finish.
