Delicate nose of blackberry and mulberry which never really opened up. Medium bodied palate of dark fruit, again accentuating the mulberry. Refined tannic structure almost completely integrated at this stage. Medium length semi-dry finish. Paired nicely with tenderloin steaks and hickory barbecue sauce. Elegant, yet a bit too pedestrian for a "flagship" wine with a premium price point. Would have rated outstanding if it showed any complexity over the course of the meal. Bottle #285.

2013 Sydney Royal Wine Show - Exhibitor's Tasting & Trophy Wines Lunch (homebush & Darling Harbour): {screwcap} Whereas the show judges gave the 2011 Kiss 95 points and a gold medal, this was pointed at a mere 83, missing a bronze by 2 points. A taste instantly confirms their decision; this is a clear step down from the 2011. It’s still peaty and spicily-fruited, but it’s dilute, almost dull by comparison with the younger vintage. The palate isn’t bad, with soft dusty tannins, and a ripe medium-length finish. It too is decently even along the tongue, with pleasant spice flavours but it just seems a touch hollow after the 2011. Not bad, but this is why they say the great is the enemy of the good...

Hunter Valley Visit 2013; 4/26/2013-4/29/2013 (Hunter Valley, Australia): Tightly wound, some spice, rhubarb and violets. Palate has good fruit depth. Structured well, but doesn't have great interest at this stage.
