  • 2021 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon

Not a fan at all. Syrup in a bottle, lots of RS. Reminded me of an expensive version of Apothic. A friend said they removed the "Produced" statement from the front of the label and now it just says "Bottled by Caymus", which probably means they are buying a lot of bulk wine and blending it. No longer a buyer.

  • 2019 Memento Mori Cabernet Sauvignon Vine Hill Ranch

Opened at dinner with friends. No decant, but we should have. A monster wine. Very extracted, rich ripe fruit, maybe a little on the porty side for me. Alcohol felt out of balance. Improved dramatically with air time.

  • 2021 Vinum Dei Cabernet Sauvignon

Wow. For starters, new producer to me that a good friend in the wine industry turned my partner onto and suggested we join the mailing list asap. 2021 was their first release, and they made 2 barrels of this wine from the Georges III vineyard in Rutherford.
Popped at a lineup with friends last night, and this was the hands-down favorite of the night.
Bonkers nose...one I kept going back to. Seductive (you will sense a theme!). One of the greatest Napa cabs I have had the pleasure of trying. Deep and saturated, nearly opaque purple-black hue. The aromas soar from the glass - red and dark fruits, exotic spices, floral notes, and an unmistakable essence of Rutherford dust. Blackcurrant, crème de cassis, black cherry compote, and wild blueberry notes. This just kept changing with aeration, and every time I went back to it I got something different. Seductive and even feminine. Violet, cinnamon, clove, and a hint of graphite, makes me think of a great left-bank bordeaux from a warmer vintage (Ducru or Pichon Comtesse)? On the palate, it is full-bodied and concentrated while maintaining a great sense of balance. Lol did I say seductive? Blackberry preserves, dark chocolate, anise, crushed rock minerality, and smoked cedar mingle in sublime harmony through the endless, supple finish that persists for an eternity. Undeniably grand cru classe caliber and will no doubt age for decades, yet approachable now for those like me who can't wait. I was allocated 6 bottles and the winery should thank me because everyone at the tasting is signing up as fast as they can!
