  • 2021 Elyse C'est Si Bon

I had this back in January at Elyse (just now found my tasting notes), but it's well worth the review:

I am by no means a Rhône fan, but this wine stood out to all of us at the tasting. After going from Elyse cabs to Addax cabs to finishing everything off with a Houyi vineyard Institution (Bevan's crème de la crème), we were poured a glass of Elyse as we walked out the door. The flavor immediately jumped out at us, even after having some of the most potent cabs in Napa.

Clear garnet color; the high alcohol from the cinsault, syrah, and grenache is immediately present on the nose with a nose with a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers with a plentiful amount of stone fruit that carries over to the palate: a blend of blueberry, apricot, cherry— all very vibrant in this wine. Just a hint of spice as the fruit fades away. Not a long finish, but it aids in the attraction to this wine.

A beautiful wine that I think would be paired great with Italian or Mediterranean food in addition to its drinkability when by itself.

  • 2021 ARNYCA Cabernet Sauvignon

    (Drank January 2024)

The only thing that could improve this wine is just holding it because it's only going to get better.

Wild blackberry, cassis, ripe cherries, dark fruit all over— from the nose to the finish, this wine is superb. The tannin structure and complexity are elite. Every sip seems to get better and better.

I would put this cab up against any other in Napa. A top-5 in my cellar, hands down.

  • 2020 Vineyard Block Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Block 820 Reserve St. Helena

    (Drank May 2024)

While this wine is very simple, I must say that it surpassed my expectations. Great QPR for someone that wants nice fruit but doesn't mind the lack of complexity. A great weeknight drinking wine to go with dinner or the perfect bottle to pull out when introducing someone to wine for the first time. I did a P&P and continued drinking over about ~2 hours— same wine, never changed. (Understandably not, as it has very little to unpack or open up to.)

A really nice nose, good vibrant fruit, but just a little too simple to give it a 90.
