  • 2013 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons

Consumed at the incomparable Noble Rot in Holborn (and subsequently on the sidewalk outside of Sotheby’s London office).

I had extremely high expectations for this wine following an amazing experience with ‘13 Preuses in late ‘22.

Upon opening, extreme reduction and maximum acidity…not Chablisian at all. The wine was quite shy and stringy otherwise, and remained like this for most of the dinner. It began to show its true colors after being open for around 2 hours…classic Dauvissat with tons of lemon, honey, and cheese, plus acid that continued to absolutely rip throughout.

Very cool experience, though definitely not up to snuff with the 13GCs, primarily in terms of concentration and length. However, a very interesting journey and worth it at the price. 89 / 100.

  • 1970 Louis M. Martini Cabernet Sauvignon California Mountain Special Selection

First of two bottles purchased from Sotheby’s on a whim, and because I need to maintain my access to their expense account.

Very cool plastic capsule, with a cork that was in better shape than wines 40 years younger that were consumed in the same night.

The wine is almost totally tertiary, and probably “over the hill,” to most, but still a lovely experience. Aromas of leather, tobacco, and forest floor on the nose, with maybe just a tiny hint of some remaining fruit.

Palate was beautiful and spritely despite its advanced age, with tons of tobacco and menthol. What really stood out about this wine to me was the structure, specifically that it was all there. Really beautifully integrated, with ripping acid that belies how old it is. Tasted again in the morning, and it had perhaps (surprisingly) improved sitting uncorked on the table.

A very happy surprise. Looking forward to the next bottle. 90 / 100.

  • 2020 Domaine Bernard-Bonin Meursault La Rencontre

My first time trying Bernard-Bonin, of which I had historically been a relative “hater,” since the prices really started to take off, and the hype really accelerated. As an enormous fan of the superior Bernard (B-V), I was trained to be a detractor of this wine.

HOWEVER, this wine is sexy as hell. Face-melting reduction, similar to a young Coche or BBV. Beautiful lemon and sesame (thx @nmmnori) aromas, which really flowered as the wine sat open but undecanted for 90-ish minutes.

Weighty yet simultaneously ethereal mouthfeel. Ripping acidity and electric lemon, with a really intense mid-palate and great length.

I get the hype around these now. Banger and silver medalist of the night for me. 93 / 100.
