Seems like Abreu has figured out how to excel in tough years. This wine is very concentrated and suprisingly good with dense fruit. It doesn’t have the focus, clarity and depth of Abreu’s best, but it’s up there for the Rothwell.

Ok, I waited for the second bottle to talk about this wine. I don’t put many notes up. The reason is that I’m embarrassingly untrained and I don’t know the proper speak. However, I DO know my Napa wines.
Wow! This wine was such a surprise. Intense fruit typical Beckstoffer black fruits. The intensity is just wow. The tannins aren’t perfectly integrated but there’s a pop on the finish that helps the finish to linger. It may sound like a drawback but the extra grit makes it interesting and enjoyable. This is such a nicely crafted wine.

Disappointed in this bottle. I think the answer is that it’s in a closed down phase. The concentration is there, the mouthfeel is right, tannins are there but not overbearing. I just could not get anything in terms of smells and tastes. Opened it and sampled it over 5 hours and it never let loose. I hope this will come around in a few years because I have more bottles in the cellar.

11/3/2019 10:30:00 AM - Hi gt3heretic. Thanks for posting on my message board. I got turned on to Boich back in 2015 (as I had liked what Jeff Ames was doing with Tor at the time), but have only had the 2012-2014 vintages. 2016 is a great vintage, so I'd imagine their version of Missouri Hopper would show quite well. I have a love-hate relationship with Hopper, as sometimes their fruit (if extracted too much) can come off too meaty and Syrah-esque. But sometimes when it hits right, it's a great party-in-your-mouth kind of experience. Thanks for the recommendation. I'll have to check it out!
