  • 2003 Château Pontet-Canet

On opening great nose of weedy black fruits. Tannins are still high and a little lower than I would like.
After 4 hours a little more harmonious. No real secondary flavors. Still quite primary. I think this has a long life ahead of it. Great wine that needs a lot of air before consumption at this point.

  • 2001 Château Lafite Rothschild

Had with the Easter leg of lamb. Opened and aired for about 2 hours. On opening quite nice on the nose with fresh acidity and light but present tannins.
With the meal, definitely the elegance expected but more youthful than I would have thought red and waxy black fruits. Pencil lead. A bit of forest floor but that is definitely in the background.
Tannins were a little poky, with the wine not really having the flesh to cover the tannins completely but they didn’t detract from the enjoyment of the wine.
I think well conserved bottles will last another 10-20 years. I was pleasantly surprised by this bottle since 2001’s have not been my favorite.

  • 1989 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut

Really interesting. This bottle was quite oxidized. There remained tons of energy and persistence. All toffee and nutty aromas. A touch of sweetness that was there at the beginning, went away after an hour or so and then came back several hours later. Not the best bottle, but still very interesting.
