  • 2012 Santa Carolina Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva de Familia

Out of the 800+ bottles I've kept over the past ten years, this ranks in the top ten of best values in terms of best values. Just simply stored on a shelf in the basement - not even in the cellar climate-controlled coolers. 92. High-end in terms of residual sweetness, so sweet without being overly sweet. Very nice depth of very good flavour. Touch of vinegar, but nothing that detracting. Nice ripeness of terrifically good fruit. Not much in terms of aroma, though. Just a mellow nicely dark red fruity aroma - no way to tell what's about to happen. Maybe a bit, but only a tiny bit, left too long before opening, so there's just a bit of open-can-of-soda-left-in-the-fridge-for-3-days flatness to it - and I'm not really complaining about that at all. It's still really good. Tannins are still present and nicely moderately medium-low and very good. It's definitely new world style, if that wasn't apparent. As always, wish I had bought more. I will be taking notice of "Family Reserve" Santa Carolina in the future.

  • 2010 Herdade do Portocarro Vinho Regional Península de Setúbal

This was a nice find. Dark. Nice tasty-smelling aroma. Classically decent old world style with some nice easy-drinking tastiness in a new world direction. Reasonably good-tasting flavour with a nice mix of fruit and light oak. This is a wonderful example of what a very good everyday red should be like. Some tannins, some oak, some juiciness, light residual sweetness, decent depth and feel, very little to complain about if anything, and quite dry. It's got some acidity of note, but seems to be holding in there without going all sour. Nice combination/ratio of ripe/unripe without bitterness. A classic everyday wine that's actually well made. Good value for what was paid. Sip after sip is good. With food is probably even better. 88 [+1 because every sip makes me happy that I bought it] = 89. I'm certain that many others would give this a 90. Might have been interesting to hold it for longer – who knows what might have developed. While this isn't that comparable to a Cali cab of similar price because of the different style, I would say that this holds its own against them in its own way, in terms of happiness per sip, assuming/whenever you occasionally get tired of having Cali cabs every day all the time, as one does.

  • 2011 Salomon Estate Syrah V

Dark. Smells OK. Initially, this was impressively good and tasty enough. After a while, it was somewhat less impressive as an element of gentle sourness crept into the picture. But, it's got all the requisite characteristics of a fairly good red – taste, acidity, oak, tannins. At times, give it some credit: this can be a really, really tasty red on the occasional sip or two or three. It's a bit spicy and peppery, but all within very good pleasurable levels. Lots of typical new world syrah characteristics, which is to say that it's a good drinking red. Very reluctant 90, but 90 nonetheless. But seriously, why does this red go by so many different names? I always seem to really like reds with a lot of sediment and this is no exception.
