The clean cork was easily extracted. The color alone made us very optimistic: medium red, largely opaque, and very little bricking on the rims. There was a lot of must on the nose, which mostly blew off, as did the barnyard aromatics, though some brett was still present on the palate. Nonetheless an inspirational bottle with lots to offer. The wine featured muted red currant notes, some leather, gravel and cigar ash, with ample acid. Quite a treat at age 54.

Another wine where the aromatics far outperformed the palate. The nose was complex and concentrated, with dark and red fruits, spice and some brambly notes. The fruit was very subdued in the mouth, however, and the finish hollowed out a bit. Give this some time!

Under screw cap. In far better shape that another bottle of this I opened some years ago, which was advanced. In fact, if I were scoring off of the nose alone, which was extraordinary, it would merit something in the very high nineties, with evident reduction expressed as sulfur and tire rubber, alongside loads of rich, ripe tropical notes and some lemon and spice. The fruit was equally ample on the palate, as was some oak spice, but the wine finished with enough phenolic bitterness that I found it distracting. Still, a very fine showing.

9/29/2016 10:41:00 PM - Thanks for your kind note on the 66x100 story. BTW, I just saw that we both had the pleasure to do a Monfortino vertical with similar conclusions.
7/16/2016 3:13:00 PM - I tasted both the 2008 and the 2012. The 2012 was slightly better to me. In the post I posted a tasting note on the 2000 and the 2010.
8/10/2015 2:24:00 PM - JonnyG,
I live in Portugal part of the year and in fact leave tomorrow to go to my home in Cascais outside of Portugal. I will research where I can possibly find the Quinta do Noval, Nacional 1963 through my sources and let you know if I can acquire it for you.
5/21/2015 6:20:00 AM - I was lucky enough to taste the 1989 Chateau Haut Brion in barrel at the Chateau and then in bottle the following year at the Chateau. Lovely wine. I will check my notes but I am certain that I have tasted 2 vintages of Quinta Do Noval Nacional but am not a Port fan as I love Sauterne and Alsace much more.
4/26/2015 11:00:00 PM - Anyone based in Santa Ynez Valley (love to Demetria), mentions fav regions as Italy, Bordeaux and Napa and loves Quinta do Noval (ever tried that vintage) and HB 1989 (one of the best wines we ever had...and the pleasure was at the Chateaux with the Managing Director), is OkeyDokey with us!!
3/14/2015 7:26:00 AM - Dear JonnyG,
Thanks for your attention and appreciation; I have immediately studied your tasting notes: good stuff, relevant notes!
1/6/2014 4:50:00 PM - I have so much "old-family" scattered around the US. Almost incredible that my North Swedish village kin-of-yore won the USA by infiltration... California, Nevada, Minnesota (coooold, go figure! *brrr* and they still say "Yaaaah."), West Virginia, Hawaii and Ohio all hold relatives of mine.
Jokes aside: If you guys ever decide to travel to Japan with some of that surplus wine (or other wine) in order to enjoy some of the best tables (BYOB at that) in the World, please drop me a mess or whatever, and we'll enjoy a fantastic time together :-)
